How To Make a Canister Filter For Aquarium

  • Do you have a small tank and can't find an adequate size filter to clean the water? Why not build your own filter. I have built a 1.7 liter canister filter that runs with a 200L/H aquarium pump attached to the inside of the canister filter. My home made canister filter is made of a glass storage container and after watching today's upload you will know how to make a canister filter for aquarium. Before starting this project, test your container for any water leakage. A canister won't work if pressure can't be build inside the container.
After buying a glass container from Ikea, I bough vinyl tubing, water pump, joiner and other supplies from Bunnings warehouse. Two holes are drilled in the container lid for filter inlet/outlet connection. I drilled another hole for the wire of water pump. Everything is sealed with aquarium safe silicone.
Two types of mechanical filter media is used in this DIY canister filter, a coarse foam and a medium foam. Biological filtration consists of ceramic rings which is highly porous media to colonize beneficial bacteria and maintain clean water in the aquarium.
In response to comments on my other videos, I have held the canister filter side ways and upside down to show that if you chose the right container then there shouldn't be any leaks and water level shouldn't drop inside the canister.
If you enjoy this video, then please give it a big like. Sharing this video on social media will increase the reach and would be highly appreciated. Thank you for reading this description and watching video. If you have any questions then please post in the comment section below and I would do the best I can to reply on time.

That's dope, pretty good idea using clear container so you can see exactly what's going on and when it needs cleaning, I don't know why all canister filters are not transparent as they are normally out of view anyway.

Yeah, I know short and sweet is generally good. But some commentary/narrative would of been helpful! What do you do if the cord of your pump doesn't come apart with the connection used in the video? Make a hole big enough for the entire plug to pass through? How would you seal that?
