In this episode, Captain Scott Kelly talks about flying Tomcats with Mooch, being a test pilot, and spending more than a year as commander of the International Space Station.
That first anecdote about Mooch kicking the skipper out of the way had me laughing hard!
Not clear to me, what was the very skipper doing there? No one wpould expect that

By the looks of the tile he showed, we are very lucky to not have lost another shuttle! Wow, that was close! What a great career he had!
There were quite a few other near misses from that issue. STS-27 being another example- they lost a full tile at one point, with more overall damage than STS-107. They lucked out that the missing tile was above a steel port, which could handle much higher heat loads than the aluminum of most of the structure. One tile to the left or the right and Atlantis would have suffered the fate Columbia ultimately did about 15 years before that mission.
Scott seems the kinda guy you can spend an afternoon with and not notice the time passing
That incident with the CO sounded like one of those call sign defining moments. Mooch could have become Boot. Fabulous episode!

This was awesome, I was almost 7 years old when I watched the movie "Apollo 13" in the theater when it came out in 1995, been a space-buff ever since, so this was a real treat for me. Thank you Mr. Carroll and thank you Mr. Kelly!

Really enjoyed that interview. Over the past year I have been reading books covering the shuttle program. “Bringing Columbia Home”was a fantastic book about the loss of Columbia, the recovery operation and the investigation. Wheels Stop is also a good book on Shuttle post challenger and it covers a lot of the Mir Shuttle and ISS build missions. It also sums up the program’s accomplishments.

That was a gem of an interview. Quite enthralling, and I was not expecting to laugh as much as I did, given the seriousness of some of the topics. Immensely informative, and entertaining.
Funny I met Scott Kelly at Umbc around fall of 1982 before I met Mark kelly my classmate at Kings Point. I remember Scott Kelly had really long curly hair and I had my KP plebe year haircut.
That chow at USMMA (jail food) must really have fuddled my brain.

Mooch, been watching your channel for awhile now and your content and guests just keep getting better! I spent my Navy career on submarines so I can relate to Scott on the isolation part of being in space. We only did a couple of months submerged and we were all ready to get home after that. Couldn't imagine what a year would feel like.

There’s a giant Willie McCool statue in Lubbock, Texas where I went to school. It’s a beautiful memorial, if you’re ever in West Texas I would suggest visiting it.
He was in my Test Pilot School class. Great guy. Very low-key - he won the award for Best Student over two other students (both of whom also selected for astronaut) who I thought had it locked up. But the staff at TPS does not discuss such things with the students, lest they start playing Kilkenney Cats with each other.
An amazing hour well spent. Two humble men, casually discussing events and technologies that literally changed the arc of modern aviation and space flight. Of course Gorillas! So many other topics though like DFCS, Running, Telomeres, VO2 max, kicking CO's, and time in the saddle. As a Triathlete, the "16 minutes from home" really hits. Spend the time, watch this.
Ward, the guys that you have on here and have served with are just the Rockstars of the Naval Aviation group. Thank you for the service to our country and our world Mr Kelly. Ward, I think he gets the award for the Most Badass Guest ! When you have a damn spacesuit in the background of your interview qualifies him for that especially. The Admirals videos are awesome but I don’t think he can top the spacesuit. 🤙🏻🤙🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸

The carrier ACLS system was programmed by my dad when it was designed. When it was tested at Pax, no Navy guys would let go of the controls. They had to get a Marine to test it on the carriers.
The only complaint I have: At one hour, it's way too short. Could listen to these stories endlessly.

Having been privileged to speak with a few astronauts in my life, I find these folks absolutely fascinating to listen to. Great interview. What a great interview! As a child of the space race days and like most kids of the 60s, I had aspirations of being an astronaut…I was literally glued to the screen the entire interview! How awesome it must be for you, Mooch, to be able to count Scott amongst your friends and be able to say you flew together!

Wow Ward, amazing the connection you had with a pilot flying with you on a cruise and then see him go to space. Love your channel. I was visiting Tucson, AZ. and was able to see in the boneyard here via google two F-14s one swept one not, next to each other. Miss those birds. (USS Ranger CV-61 91-93 Last Ride in my former male life.)

@@adambowman8543 Yes, he was. He served in the USN from 1949 to 1952 and flew in Korea. He was in the Reserve from 1952 to 1960. He had resigned from the Navy before becoming an astronaut but he was a Navy aviator.

One of the most consistent and particularly notable traits of all astronauts that I've noticed, is their freakish level of psychological stability. They seem emotionally unshakable or excitable.
I am an ABH but force converted to GM. I've always loved jets landing on the flight deck...keep doing what you're doing

My dad was an F-8 pilot. He's gone, but listening to Ward not only brings back memories but lets me know more about what he did at that time in his life. If anyone knows how to find VF-103 Sluggers schwag, please let me know. I'd like to have some to remind me of him and all the great Naval Aviators that have served our Country.

I love your channel and this ep especially. I always wanted to be a fighter pilot and an astronaut. Still do, but Im nearly 7 feet tall so I cannot. The recruiter told me my knees would be chopped off in the event of an ejection and the military doesnt like to spend all that time and money jus to have me bleed out from an ejection. And thats even if I could fit inside the cockpit ha.
That was amazing! It goes to show what a Naval Aviator can accomplish outside the realm of normal ops. Very interesting and informative. We really are continuing to explore the avenue of space and expanding on it. And perhaps more importantly, doing it on a multi-cultural level. Great presentation again Ward.
