Fun Fact: Eddie Murphy's BAFTA nomination for his voiceover performance was the first of its kind.
Mythology Fact: Loosely based on William Steig's fairytale picture book of the same name. The character of Shrek (Mike Myers) is based on a figure of the same name in Russian folklore, dating as far back as 1200 AD.
That's Dark Fact: When the fairytale creatures arrive at Shrek's (Mike Myers) swamp, you can see Papa Bear comforting Baby Bear at a fire. Later in Lord Farquaad's (John Lithgow) castle, as he watches Fiona (Cameron Diaz) on the mirror you see Mama Bear as a rug, skinned, and laying on the floor.
Voice Play Fact: The principal actors never met each other. They all read their parts separately, with a reader feeding them the lines. John Lithgow later admitted that, while he enjoyed playing Lord Farquaad, he was a little disappointed that he never actually worked directly with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, or Eddie Murphy.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The song All Star (1999) by Smash Mouth, heard in the opening credits, was only a placeholder for test screenings until a new song could be found. But test audiences loved it, and the producers kept it in. When the producers decided to keep All Star (1999) they decided to let the band perform the last song in the movie, I'm A Believer (2001).
No True Scot Fact: Mike Myers originally voiced Shrek with his natural speaking voice before the film was test-screened. Then he tried country Canadian accents for Shrek. However, after viewing a rough cut of the film, he felt that something was missing from his performance, and re-recorded all of his lines with a Scottish accent, based on the voice his mother used when reading him bedtime stories as a child. The original voice can still be heard in the technical goofs on the DVD. The decision to revoice Shrek in a Scottish accent ended up costing an additional $4 million, as it took him twenty sessions to complete the re-voiceover. This was his first voice performance in an animated film.
The magic mirror is impersonating a game show from the 1960's called "The Dating Game". They are even using the dating game theme music. I was there in the 1960's so I remember it. Dulac is a parody of Disneyland. The bird exploded when she sang because they say that a high note will shatter glass. Her high note shattered the bird.
So many adult undertones! My husband and I watched it with our 5 kids when it came out!! We seen so much that the kids did not understand! Such a great movie!
She sings to the bluebird in a spoof from the original Disney Snow White, where Snow White is having a singing duel with a bluebird. There is this trope of an opera singer being able to hit just the right note that it causes a glass to vibrate at the same frequency and then shatter - used at one time in an ad for Memorex tape - "Is it real or is it Memorex?" Wouldn't quite work the same on a bird but what the hey?!
If you saw the Disney " Pinocchio " there's a theory saying that Donkey can talk because he was one of the boys turned into donkeys in Pleasure Island.
I think the princess is disappointed to be rescued by an ogre because she expected to be by the prince Charming line in traditionnal tales.
Fun fact : in the french version, when Donkey sings about being alone after meeting Shrek, he sings in french and english
I thought Donkey was based on the tale of the singing animals who scared away thieves with their singing

When this movie was made, Dreamworks was in a big dispute with Disney, headed by Michael Eisner at the time. Dreamworks' nickname for him was "f*ckwad," hence the name Lord Farquad. (And Eisner was known for being short.)

One of the few sequels that surpass the original (Terminator 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots 2 are some more examples I can think of)
Definitely not. Way more jokes in the second but they don’t all hit as hard and it relies more on referential humor. I mean it’s fun and expands the universe and puss in boots is awesome but the first is clearly better.

I liked this movie, except for one little thing: they left Fiona as an ogre. I was hoping they would leave her as a human, to send the message that two people don't have to look the same to love each other. Instead, they reinforced the myth that ugly only goes with ugly.

I can see that y'all have missed out on a lot of movies you have missed several movie parodies
Here's how I rank the Shrek films: Shrek 2 is the best, then Shrek 4, Shrek 3, & Shrek 1 is last. I know a lot of people say Shrek 3 is the worst, but my main problem with 1 is Shrek acts very unlikable for most of it, & I feel Lord Farquad is not as great a villain as the others.

This movie is a classic but I will never understand why they thought it was ok to put swear words and sexual innuendos the movie.
Why is it not? Parents and kids alike love it. Kids get it when they are older. It's supposed to be a slap in the face to the classic and "innocent" Disney movies. Which kids loved Shrek more. That's why it's a classic. Without the swears and innuendos, this movie would be a boring knock off Disney movie.
@onethatdoesart5650 I understand that but it can still be all of that without the swearing Nad the sexual innuendos. Don't get me wrong I'm bit a prude by any means but as a kid it was always shocking to hear swear words or see anything sexual in a kids movie. When I was 11 and I was at Kmart od Walmart and I overheard this couple talking and the man told his wife to not buy Shrek for their child because it had cussing in it.
@@mutantx2372 when I was 11, I was investigating my body parts and learning how to please myself. Without any movies, books, or whatever else have you. That's just life. Prudish nature is okay, but that's just you. Some kids are far more mature, aware, and understanding than others. That's why Im not a fan of censorship or hidden lifestyles. Kids being kids is cool, but you have to know when to let them grow at their own pace. Besides it's just words. So long as your kid is kind to others, swear words and adult understandings don't matter. My parents were very prude and strict and all it did was make me curious and rebellious. Again, that's just life. Everyone does things differently. Control and childhood "Innocence" is just a falsified concept created by purity culture and evangelicalism. I totally support your feelings, but be sure to know that your children might do, learn, and behave differently. There's nothing wrong with it.
