    Donne is wonderful, sort of poet decathlete who doesn’t grab a gold in any individual form, but I love his work. Do you have a favorite poem or sequence from him? I always enjoy Songs and Sonnets.

    You know, when you pull out a book of poetry it's nice when you read an example poem. Just if you were ever looking for anything else to say...
    I love Donne but I wouldn't say he's the best for all of those things, though possibly one of the best of his time.

    Agreed, the A. J. Smith edition is wonderful. I go back to it often. Have not come across the Ilona Bell version before. The funny thing with Donne’s editors is that e.g. punctuation depends so much on what manuscript version they happen to choose - and those commas and semicolons mean quite a lot sometimes!

    My favorite of Donne’s poetry is An Elegy upon the Death of Mistress Bulstrode. Highly recommend it
