I was thinking the same thing! I kept re-checking I thought maybe I was reading the following count wrong. I am a new follower! Great video!
When I was a broke college student, I worked at taco bell for 3 years. I ate 2/3 of my meals there because it was free, I was in better shape than I am right now. It's definitely not the healthiest thing you could eat considering how much of the food they have is highly processed but damn it's far better than a lot of other fast food.
When I worked at taco bell I was fat as hell lol
The problem I have with TB are the tacos. I love them, but it's not so fun paying for a taco that has all lettuce with a small spoonful of meat.
@@kelperdude yeah that’s why I am starting to make my own food. Then I’ll take it to work and warm it up. Better than processed crap
@@RaiJK3 - I agree, it's always best to make your own food. The best kitchen investment I've made recently was an 8 quart instant pot, which was around $100. I use that thing constantly. I bought it for the slow cooker, but ended up using it mainly for the pressure cooker, with meals done in an hour. One of my favorites is to soak organic dry beans for 12 hours, dump the water, and add in all the ingredients for chili. It tastes fantastic, is a very very small fraction of the cost to buy fast food, and it makes a ton of food that can be frozen. There are so many different things to make with it and YT has tons of videos showing how to make the dishes. :)
@@kelperdude yes! I also have something to do instead of sitting around all day as well! 16-20 bucks for a few days of leftovers along with more ingredients for future meals. It’s so great! Those little devices come in handy for sure.
After losing just shy of 100 pounds, the primary thing that helps Taco Bell is the simple fact that their meals are primarily protein-based. In my diet personally, on 2,000 calories, I was finding myself fuller & less tired after eating at Taco Bell specifically than with any other fast food restaurant. If you’re trying to drop weight, but need to indulge a little bit, this entire experiment works, as someone who went from 250 IBs, all the way down to 155IBs (5’8”).
That's a good point. I never leave Taco Bell feeling hungry. For the same price from Burger King or McDonald's I almost always feel like I could eat more.
Sounds like taco bell is the new subway.
@IOxidaxgod Bravo! That's an applaudable accomplishment. How long did it take you to lose the weight? How much exercise was combined with the low calorie intake-times a week, intensity, type? I'm in the same situation, however I'm in a wheelchair with limited mobility and a lifting restriction of one pound. Doing 1,200 calories a day with PCP approval and quarterly monitoring. However my challenge is, I can't do any real exercising with my physical limitations. It's all joint and targeted muscles work.
@@REJohns aside from where i work, really no exercise at a gym. most of my calorie burning came from really just doing stuff like walking on the beach, walking around at car meets, etc. the gym is only a physical representation of your work ethic towards that goal, i believe the vast majority of people should do stuff similar to what i did, as it will have a better effect completely
@@lOxidaxgod Thanks for replying. Sounding hokey as hell-your comment brought me such internal peace. I keep hearing that I need to exercise and to just keep looking for something that will work. I go about on my own quite well but not outside around my own neighborhood. The problem is that I live at the top of a hill. When I'm out in my neighborhood with others, it's a 50/50 shot that I will be able to get up the hill without help. You've inspired me to
consistently go out and roll around my neighborhood. It'll probably po my aide to have them start regularly go out for walks with me, but I don't care. I want to build up my stamina and confidence to eventually go out on my own. Thank you for your much needed help.

@@baldsportsfan9368 Maybe not evil but his documentary was flawed. Morgan Spurlock hid that he was an alcoholic and attributed his liver damage and impotence to all the McDonald’s he ate that month.
As a Taco Bell General Manager, I can proudly say that it is in fact one of the healthiest fast food places out there. The food also doesn't have as many preservatives or additives as people think! Makes my job a lot easier when explaining dietary needs or restrictions to customers.
I’ve worked with a ex Taco Bell worker and they said even their taco meat isn’t real. It’s mostly filler
What about people saying the meat is all filler?
It’s one of the few places that doesn’t make me feel terrible afterwards.
Preservatives and additives really mean exactly jack diddly when it comes to the overall health of food. Love me some TB, but with a couple exceptions, it is FAR from healthy.
@@dogsarentdangerous1195 Maybe not healthy. But healthier than competition
This video is so well done. I eat a vegan diet, and Taco Bell has been my go to and favorite fast food restaurant for a long time, and it was so cool to see you do a side quest on their options! Taco bell has a fresco style you can order most items that remove dairy and i usually swap animal for potato. Vegan btw
Weight is a health marker
That lean muscle supporting a strong metabolic rate is 100% spot on. As a teen I had such a low BMI because I was working out so often and ate five small meals over the course of the day that all had high sodium, high protein, low carb. My body fat percentage was sub 2.5% and doctors kept telling me " Stop working out, take a month, just eat high carb food. " - and I never did. Fast forward to me being 18, I get Leukemia and my resting heart rate is so low that the doctors thing the Leukemia is killing me and I have to go " No that's just my resting heart rate. 38 - 48 is where I rest when laying around. " and the doctors just were stunned because that's " I am actively dying " levels and yet I was one of the healthiest teens they'd ever seen - aside from the cancer.
Ehlers Danlos Syndrome prolly helps. I consume a ton of sugar and caffeine in my day-to-day because water just goes right through my body and I kinda have to because my organs work at nearly twice the rate of a normal individual. I'm... basically a mutant - but they don't like using those terms so they made reference to me as " Genetically divergent " in medical journals and studies. I was one of the first recorded cases of someone with confirmed Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Acute Lymphatic Leukemia, so I was the test subject for a few chemo types and approaches. I'm the reason they know " Don't give the EDS patients steroids unless absolutely necessary, their bones will rot. " ( Avascular necrosis )
lol
that's so interesting that you are in medical journals like that. i am so sorry you had to go through all of that though. I have a couple of friends with elhers danlos syndrome and i'm chronically ill myself so i understand the struggle and the grief that comes with being sick long term like this. i hope you are doing well❤
Why didn't you take a month break
This is so well made I thought it had to be formally commissioned by Taco Bell. After a quick scroll the description and not finding any TB sponsorship, but instead landing on crisis lines, I couldn’t have more appreciation and respect for your work & channel 💛

@pythor2117 Idk. He just doesn't seem disingenuous about his interest in the experiment. It's not exactly the most thrilling topic to explore, necessarily, but here this man is, walking the walk.

im disabled and probably at risk of an ed if im not careful, so its been a challenge to do things to improve my health or move around more during the day and making sure im doing it through a healthy mindset
cause of all that i personally see "eating healthy" more as making sure you arent getting too much or too little of certain nutrients in your average diet and making small adjustments when you can
Aside from your amazingly well produced and entertaining video, supporting the food needs of indigenous people and having great compassion for people with food insecurities and food issues is beyond incredible.
I’m very picky about who I follow on TH-cam; you have a new subscriber ❤
This was actually such a well articulated experiment. Really appreciate the careful lengths you went to in order to not fall into negative stereotyping. I'm a trainer + powerlifter and very familiar with getting bloodwork and other health markers done, so it was awesome to see you really take the big picture into account instead of taking a myopic view of health by only assessing weight. I think your choice of exercise was also great, giving yourself three days of weight training and two to work on cardiovascular health specifically, and never indicated any the exercise to be for "fat loss".
I've always opted for Taco Bell in a pinch due to how much healthier their options are compared to other restaurants, so it was really interesting to see that bias confirmed a little bit. Overall, super solid video, really enjoyed it. (Also if you're wondering, found this via IG!)
Appreciate you saying that!!
This is such a great reminder that when it comes to watching your health, don't go into it blindly, and listen to your body, not your cravings.
Why didn’t you mention your -49 point decrease in LDL? That is huge! That’s probably the most impressive considering its implication in cardiovascular disease. Also like your philosophy within the documentary.
did he mention his exercise habits pre experiment? I assume ldl decreased because of the increase in activity. I wonder how the results would have been different if he were sedentary.
@@ok-lv1qyhe never exceeded 4 hours of exercise per week in any week during the experiment
@@TrilliumShakespeare no offense but that doesn't answer the question. They asked how much he worked out before this experiment. I'm really curious too.
Sup y’all - pretty similar levels of exercise before and during the experiment
This was shocking to me so I analyzed his food log. he really stuck to mostly chicken and cut out a lot of cheese/sour cream! So that part definitely makes more sense now.
Man this video made me emotional a bit, I had a lot of body insecurities since I was 11 and ended up with an undiagnosed eating disorder (people just didn’t noticed) at 14 til I was 16. When I was 16, my pediatrician told me if I didn’t start eating I’d either die or be hospitalized in the next 3months. I turn 18 in April and I’m proud to say I have a healthy relationship with food now. Taco bell actually was one of those foods that helped me get through a lot because it was one of the only foods that made me feel comfortable. So this vid and ur language and the way you approached the subject was so refreshing and nice to hear. If I had saw videos like this at 11yrs old I probably would’ve never developed insecurities about my body so i honestly really love this video
I ate Taco Bell just about every day for an entire year (most of those days it was the only thing I ate) back in 2021 and lost over 80lbs and it was honestly the best I had ever been feeling in my life. It was great to see what your experiment came up with for results cause I did always wonder what it was doing to my body for just a month. Everyone would always look at me like I was crazy when I told them Taco Bell was how I found myself in a healthier place but I’d also always be sure to tell them “it may have worked for me but I seriously don’t recommend it for anyone else.”

I am Muscogee. I loved loved how you brought up Indigenous peoples! Thank you! We are often forgotten about, and you made sure we weren't forgotten for once.
Just note for anyone thinking that they can eat Taco Bell every day and expect the same result, its important to mention that during this experiment, Sam was probably way more conscious about his health considering the risks involved. He had fairly frequent blood checks and health monitoring which most people won't do, an example is his concern over sodium intake which he found ways to counter by looking at nutrition information and choosing different meal items. He was probably moving more constantly, not necessarily exercising but things like choosing to get up more or go for walks and he had an expert emphasise strength training as ideal over cardio for keeping his metabolism high. It would have been great to compare activity levels before and during the experiment, then measure his health a month later with a normal eating routine.
I went to check his meal log, and he regularly would customize the items by adding tomatoes and nixing things like cheese sauce, cheese, and sour cream. Having less cheese and creamy sauces probably helps Taco Bell's nutritional profile a decent amount.
Nah, proof is in the results.
@@user-pc6ho3pe2c The point isn't that eating Taco Bell makes you healthy, it's that you can be healthy even while eating just Taco Bell. Basically, if someone thinks that cutting fast food from their diets will make them healthy, they're misattributing the factors that are actually affecting their health and are probably going to continue to make the same poor decisions that are negatively affecting their health regardless of where they're eating.
Bingo! As for the meal log stuff mentioned in this thread - a lot of what you see is just the result of choosing "fresco style" in the app. It replaces cheese and sour cream with tomatoes. My exercise was consistent before the experiment 😌
yeah don't eat fast food 3 times a day cause even if it's not gonna hard just stop your heart if it's starting off decently healthy the sodium is not good for you. At most 1 time a day is the max you should have if you're eating healthy fast food and not garbage fast food

it's a terrible documentary actually and he lied in it quite a lot.

I am jealous! They used to be 1$ by me they are like 2.79 now
Same here
Add black beans to the spicy potato soft taco to elevate
Reminds me of when Burger King had 10 nuggets for a dollar when I was in college before the pandemic. They were nasty, but they kept me fed and alive 😂
I wouldn’t call that a flex
I know I'm late to this, but... man. So much respect to you and the way you approached making this video. Extremely well done and the messages delivered throughout were wonderful. You seem like a genuinely great person, Sam. I wish you well and good luck with all of your future projects! Can't wait to see what you cook up next.
Reminded me of the concepts of early youtube but with modern sensibility and production value. Great job on this video.
Seriously.. this was a job well done. The amount of effort you made into this.. especially interviewing with professionals.. you should be very proud of this. Well done sir, you’ve earned another sub.👏👏👏
Thanks Keegan!! Appreciate you saying that!
@@therealsamreid No problem Sam! Glad to have stumbled across this in my suggested!! 🙌🤝
Love the oceans 11 reference at the end
Bro why did you comment on this
The Ocean’s 11 homage at the fountain was perfect.
As a Taco Bell lover, this was very insightful. My question is have you had Taco Bell since the experiment?
Yes!!! I actually have the Taco Lover's pass currently 😂
@@therealsamreid 😂😂😂
@@therealsamreid what was the first thing you ate after this?
@@bg710 I went and grabbed a burger combo meal from Cookout!!!
I love the fact that he pointed out and answered every ‘what if’ anyone could possibly think of while watching this. I haven’t made it all the way through the video but I hope you succeed!
If Taco Bell didn't have so much salt it could be considered healthy. The calorie content is not the issue, it's mostly a salt problem. The core issue is that Tacobell would be bland without extra salt as there is nothing much to it.
Yup. And we don't see evidence of excess sodium consumption in vitals often until it's been years and things are already in a bad place. This experiment doesn't really prove anything
What an incredible video... I never thought Taco Bell was healthy, but now I see it's a healthier option than I thought! Also, absolutely incredible audio and editing skills, def isn't going unnoticed.
I feel like using the word “healthier” is deceiving, let’s use “less-worse” or “the lesser of two evils”
I was just thinking of how privileged I was to buy groceries today, and wondered how much longer I would be able to shop like this with inflation. I really appreciate you considering the accessibility of food for different demographics when making this.
When I was in college, I was doing a report on fast food restaurants, going into nutrition, sanitation, etc. The Taco Bell on campus was by far the cleanest, most organized and most cordial of any of the restaurants I visited, which was the complete opposite of what I had expected. I truly do think they get a bad rap that isn't entirely deserved.
So happy this showed up on my recommendation! I clicked on the video because of the fun title but stayed for the incredible storytelling and film. I know it's been a while since this was uploaded, but congratulations on such a cool project :) I'm excited about the new content as a new subscriber!
Thanks so much for saying that! I’m glad you’re here
The production level compared to the subscriber count is atrocious. Give this man the subs he deserves 😭
I'm a UVA alumn and in some ways its comforting to know the student body hasn't changed a bit. I also distinctly remember making a whole walking trip to go to the Taco Bell in Barracks because I was sad that day - only to find out it was closed for Easter! I then called my family and cried a little. My family still makes fun of me for it. Great video dude!
I love and greatly appreciate your message at the end! I think it's so important for people to try to focus less on the number on a scale and more on how they feel mentally and physically. It can also help to use physical measurements if you're working toward a specific goal, but overall, just making sure that you're monitoring your basic health needs is what matters most.
BMI is garbage, agreed. But if you’re 5’4 and weigh 290 pounds. Your weight is definitely bothering your health
Appreciate you taking the time to comment! Had to cut out a lot of our conversation to be concise but I think the point she’s trying to convey is that when working with clients she’s found it more beneficial (and effective) to focus on sustainable habits as opposed to the number on the scale
I really appreciate so many of the points you made!! I know there are a lot of people who wont take this seriously, but I really do appreciate this. Food accessibility is a major issue that is not talked about near enough! Thank you so much for this!!!
Thanks Lindsey!
I just want to commend how well you addressed bias and your experience influencing the results. Gotta say, this was really entertaining as well as informative. Thanks!
Honestly I had a very low expectation at the start of the video but honestly great video overall and I am now a new subscriber ❤
Thank you so much for this video. I cannot believe this does not have more views. I struggle with an eating disorder and this video gave me so much comfort. Keep at it!
I’m indigenous. This means a lot. Thanks for your work.
The other night I came across your video on the pizza experiment between Papa Johns, Dominos & Pizza Hut. And I've been pretty hooked into your channel ever since. As someone who is an avid Taco Bell enjoyer, this experiment was EXTREMELY informative and a very great watch. Thanks for putting it together for all of us. Will definitely keeo up with the channel, you have a great energy here :)
This is so incredibly thoughtfully made! Didn't skip any of these ads, you deserve this!
I can’t tell you how much this video means to me having ocd and having friends who are in large bodies and have struggled with eating disorders their whole life due to fear mongering over food and framing movement in a weight loss only light. ❤ this conversation matters so much
I'm a person who has watched hundreds if not thousands of documentaries and this is one of the most well-done docs on fast food that I have seen. You did a wonderful job. Wow (insert applause)!
I clicked on this video by accident and ended up staying for the whole thing. Seeing someone on this platform express the importance of intuitive eating and maintaining a healthy relationship with food is so refreshing.
I appreciate you taking the time to, even though it is not even remotely a topic in your video, list 988 prevention information and resources in the video description. Every effort helps! As someone who’s family has experienced the loss of a loved one to su**ide, I am thankful you are making an effort to spread the word.
No matter what food is available to you, you can and should make informed choices when it comes to the ingredients and portions you consume. Don’t get discouraged if you’re in a food desert or don’t have much say in where your food comes from for whatever reason. Just keep educating yourself and caring about yourself!
Well done! Lots of great stuff here! Also cool to know that TB has a lot of people advocating under them actively making their menu healthier every day!
This is absolutely crazy, I love your presentation and video quality. You are going to blow up man, this was amazing! Progress is progress and never expected Taco Bell to actually be “healthy.” ❤
The biggest thing people don't understand is how important moderation is. In my opinion overeating is what really causes the most health problems and screws up the body.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this documentary and it did NOT disappoint!!
🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🙌🏼
I had never heard of you, never seen any of your content before. I don't know why this showed up on my TH-cam feed, but I'm really glad I gave this the full watch. Your approach at this from, every angle, and the level of care you and your experts took to emphasize a healthy relationship with food in general for everybody, as well as specifically your body and the taco bell you were eating, was great. As someone who struggles with stage-2 hypertension, I was so pleasantly surprised that you were able to get your blood pressure back down, still eating nothing but taco bell, simply by being more careful about your sodium intake and eating some more tomatoes and potatoes and drinking orange juice (while still lowering your glucose levels!).
Great video, man!
This has quickly become one of my favorite channels!
This is very well done. Entertaining and honest, but with some good data and resources linked into this video, too. I think a key take away that can be generally applied is that you checked in on your health and made smaller tweaks that are sustainable (i.e. watching your sodium). The side quest with the Taco Bell dietician was a great score. All in all, because of this video, I'm a new subscriber.
I love the well-roundedness of this video, incorporating the good and bad of fast food with the highs and lows of your experiment. I hope you can still enjoy a chalupa every now and then after this!
Just want to remind/inform everyone that you are twice as likely to die from being underweight than being overweight, and it poses a much greater risk to your health too x
really? that is crazy to me, makes it even more sad that so many people starve themselves because of societal pressure/eating disorders
Followed the whole thing, well done and applause to you for taking the initiative fam
🙌🏼Appreciate you!! Thanks for following along!
i eat taco bell pretty frequently, like 4-5 times a week due to it being cheap and doesn’t make me feel disgusting after. thank you for this information!!
Why don't you just cook more?

I hardly ever watch videos this long because my attention span is garbage since covid, but I was kept engaged by this. Great work!
My wife and I were laughing out loud at so many points. And love your caveats and qualifications along the way. Super approachable, informative, and challenging.
This was such a great video. I love how conscious you are of what you're eating after the first week and completing the first challenge.
My boy Sam just did the damn “Supersize Me”movie in 30 mins 😭😭😭🤣🤣💀🤦🏽♂️ Mainstream media is DEAD.
I love ts dawg- Amazing video💪🏼🔥
The end result is without a doubt skewed due to your health concern in the third week. But it also shows that eating blindly without looking at nutrition is definitely harmful. Very good documentary.
I wouldn't call it skewed since he did still eat taco bell every day, at min 3x a day which was the aim. Anyone can be selective about what they order when going to fast food places
@@PurpleCows Eating "Taco Bell" suggests that all meals in the menu are healthy. His health shown small sign of deterioration when he wasn't being selective of his food, which proved eating "Taco Bell" does not correlate to being healthy. When he chose to eat healthier options, his health improved, which showed that certain menu items are healthier than the others.
@@HuyDao0014 no one in the video said that taco bell was healthy. Even their dietitian said that taco bell was one of the healthiest fast food options but not necessarily healthy.
@@PurpleCows Then why did you said the result is not skewed? He wanting to eat healthier option menu is a selection bias, which made the result instead of "Eating taco bell improves my health", into "Eating healthy taco bell food improves my health as long as I avoid high sodium and other stuff". That's exactly what skewing the data mean, it's literally in the title.
@@HuyDao0014 he ate every single item on the menu at least once... This video wasn't to say that everything on their menu is healthy. That isn't the case at any restaurant. He was trying to see if he could eat taco bell 3x a day and still be in okay health..... He accomplished that. He was still eating their food and got the result he got.
