Longhorn Steakhouse has their version called onion petals. They are the best! Not greasy and fried to perfection and so crunchy. I find the blooming onions at Texas Roadhouse and Outback to be a tad greasy.

Love this video! The Bloomin’ Onion is my favorite food in the world - one year for my birthday, I ordered 13 crispy Bloomin’ Onions. I’ve even met the Bloomin’ Onion mascot at the (now defunct) Outback Bowl in Tampa a couple years back. When I was in New Orleans a couple years ago, of course Russel’s was my first stop. Although it was unique to taste a piece of history, I have to say that I prefer Outback - the horseradish sauce pairs so much better with fried onion in my opinion. Thanks for such a great video and informing the world of the history of this delicious appetizer!
Roadhouse and Outback both use a hollow cylindrical cutter to cut out the middle of the onion post cooking. Thus cutting the core that holds the onion together.
2:09 nice jetlag hat!! With your history of random challenges (doughnut run comes to mind in particular), makes me think you'd be a fun contestant that could go against Sam or Adam in a footrace someday.
No way! I lived on a sailboat at that marina across the street for 2 years. I’ve been to Russell’s many a times and have enjoyed the onion mum but never knew it was the OG!
My first encounter with a blooming onion was the Awesome Blossom at a Virginia Beach Chili's back in the early 90's. Because I like any deep-fried breaded onion, I don't have a favorite. I still like ketchup as the best dip for onion blossoms and rings.
hey Sam, I've been subbed for probably a year (I think I first saw the Taco Bell challenge video), but I've recently been having your videos on while I'm doing my makeup, getting ready, or just hanging on the couch. Not only that, you put a lot of care and effort into producing and editing these, by far some of the best quality videos I see on this platform nowadays. Thanks for being such an awesome creator!
Oneo f the most ironic parts about the bloomin onion, is that it's made convenient by a tool Outback calles "gloria" which is a modified veggie dicer on rails that stops short of pushing through. An engineer and inventor who loved their bloomin onion so much he wanted to help them make it easier for a nominal price. He was laughed out of the board room at his proposal. Years later he got frustrated that he designed it for them, and was rejected-- so he gave it to them as a gift. They immediately patented it and secured a manufacturer to put it in all of their stores. they only opened the restaurant because they wanted to eat and drink at cost for cheap after playing golf, and Crocodile Dundee was super popular which lead to huge booms in australian tourism. It only exists because rich dudes wanted to get drunk and eat steak for cheap and they figured they could get their neighbors to pay a premium to sit in a crocodile dundee themed restaurant lmao. They proudly teach you all of this as part of your entry training.
Growing up in New Orleans, I fondly remember the Onion Mum at Copeland's in the late 80's and early 90's. It doesn't appear to be on their menu anymore.
My favorite variation of the Bloomin' Onion was from a regional chain called Texas Steakhouse & Saloon (same company that owns Sagebrush Steakhouse), that has locations in WV and NC. Their version was called The Yellow Rose of Texas. It was phenomenal. Sadly, they ended up replacing it with onion petals. The batter and sauce are the same, but the fun of pulling petals from the blossom is a big part of the experience in my book. Their sauce is top tier, though. Its honey mustard based, but has a bit of a BBQ kick to it.
In Australia Lone Star steakhouse no longer exists as a brand but many of the outlets have reopened as Lone Star Rib House. It's basically the same thing with a slightly different name. All the locations seem to be the more successful former Lone Star steakhouse sites
I'd say that I enjoy the Cactus Blossom fro Texas Roadhouse slightly more than the Bloomin' Onion from Outback Steakhouse. I would very much love to try more from other restaurants. Also, I once had Bloomin' Onion that was being served at my local state fair. It wasn't bad, but I do recall having a difficult time pulling the pieces of breaded onion off of it as well.
Another thing with the bloomin' onion is that the idea also came from the "onion petals" which were, essentially the same, basic thing as onion rings other than how it was cut. They're essentially the same cut except all the way prior to frying, so you have a pile of petals rather than the whole blossom effect.
Most places have failed to really know how to cook a blooming onion. Blanching them before hand allows them to not be so dark when you deep fry them. There are places that have really gotten it right.
