  • Usually you find me in the instructor seat. In this video I get behind the wheel and show everyone the kind of things that I will be thinking on the road. This episode concentrates on Planning around Liverpool, England. I try to show how planning stops you reacting and reduces risk. Please let me know what you think in the comments.

    "Where's my phone? ...... Take 2." Really glad you left that in as this shows a level of humility - nobody is perfect after all 😆😉.
    Whenever watching your uploads I always ask myself "Would I drive to the same (Ashley's) standard?" Only an assessment can answer that for certain and, to be fair, most people have an exaggerated opinion of their abilities.
    Failing to plan is basically the same as planning to fail. Avoiding or lowering risk is definitely key. You might have the reactions of a Formula One driver but a properly prepared driver wouldn't have to react at all.
    Excellent upload today. Inspiring.
    Stay safe everyone 👍.

    Ashley , as a bus driver with 24 years experience we use hazards of parked on a stop for an extended time ie running early etc . Sadly as you said this is needed due to the poor driving of other bus drivers pulling up too close . Sadly the standards of bus drivers has declined massively in the time I’ve done the job . I’d say around 50% of drivers at my depot are absolutely shocking

    The art to good driving is being a lazy driver, my old instructor told me this, the only thing that over works are your eyes, don't brake when you need to, let go of the accelerator, don't indicated when you don't need to, check to see if it helps anyone around, don't change gear too often, use brakes up to junctions etc., and go from 4th to 2nd i.e.missing out gears if necessary, even going up the box. Great video, reminds me of my instructor.

    Excellent video Ash. I'd like to think I can do a reasonable amount of planning but after watching this I see I can do better. I'm a firm believer in continuing to improve my driving skill (passed 2 1/2 years ago) and content like your videos are very helpful.

    Absolutely brilliant. You remind me of my instructor, he would drive so calmly and it made me feel much better. I often feel pressured or like I have to rush and get out of people's way so it's nice to see a video like this and be reminded of this.
    I'll certainly be trying to look much further ahead, which I have been doing.
    I always hate coming up to traffic lights on green where the speed of the road is above 30mph, we have some lights by us where the road is a 60mph and people bomb it over the lights, I always worry and think, should I be dropping down to 50mph, 40mph? It comes up so fast and I honestly don't think the car would stop anyway unless I was doing 30mph which doesn't seem practical on a 60mph?
    Thanks again Ashley

    15:21 interesting, I would have thought the opposite - if you get into 1st gear as soon as you stop, it's one less thing to think about so you can focus more on observing around you. Also allows you to move off quicker if needed (while being flexible to what the vehicle next to you is doing) to get into the staggered column formation or merge lanes ahead.

    Iconic drive down Hope Street, Everyman on the left, Phil on the right and a cathedral out of the front and back window. Carlsberg don't do cities, but if they did, they'd struggle to make one like Liverpool.

    Planning makes all the difference. The road would be a better, less stressful place if more people did it. Almost everyday on a dual carriageway with a 50 limit where I'm turning right I put on a signal as early as needed but people still choose to get 'caught' behind me and then swerve at the last moment. I. hate. that. Rant over haha
    Keep the videos coming Ash!

    @28:42 "- as a someone who drives and cycles the vast majority of 'conflict' is poor observation skills from drivers who simply don't look properly at junctions or when changing lanes.
    I have never had a conflict with a cyclist when driving because I am aware of my surroundings and look properly.

    Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance... an old engineering axiom, but one that completely applies when driving or riding a motorcycle. I find it just terrible how many people do not plan - they fail to use good judgement, to use their eyes properly, manage their speed, utilize the proper lane... the list goes on. Took a nice hour's ride with my g/f on our motorcycles (she is a new rider requiring an experienced rider chaperone, and we always use a set of voice-operated comms). We did not plan the route beforehand, but proper planning and use of vision habits and spacing/pacing made it a truly enjoyable ride of 50km on a mix of road types, from what you would call estate roads to secondary arteries (no motorways).

  • @ibs5080
    @ibs5080 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video as always Ashley and I like the fact that nothing was rehearsed, including your route.
    When you first started this series, I also remember you saying that what you are narrating to us as part of your running commentary is just a fraction of what is actually going through your mind, as you would not have time to narrate everything. I totally get where you are coming from when you made that statement.
    Just curious to ask how is the ride quality on your new BMW? You seemed to get bounced around in your seat quite a bit and I was using the split screens you provided to try and analyze how much you were bouncing around in your seat and correlate it to the apparent quality of road surface. To me it often looked as though you were jiggling around to a relatively smooth road but I could be mistaken. At several points in the video, it almost looked comical and all we needed was a bit of music! I don't mean that in any disrespectful way whatsoever , just my humour in these rather troubled times.
    I've commented on this before but I feel it might be useful if your front facing dash cam was one of those that show vehicle speed. I feel this would add an extra dimension to your videos and an even more useful learning tool, though I also appreciate it might invite extra criticism. Of course, I would not have GPS coordinates displayed, for obvious privacy reasons, just speed in mph. I will say I did like the three screen approach, namely front view, rear view and driver / cockpit view.
    Very nice neighbourhood at the very beginning of your video by the way!
    Thanks again for your excellent work Ash.

    Just my thoughts on the vid.
    At 16:40 when you overtake the cyclist, I notice that you basically change the lane without indicating. The white car behind you may haven't seen the cyclist, so it couldn't know what you were planning in this situation. It had its distance and you checked it, sure, but is it really ok not to indicate in that situation? Would you indicate only if you noticed the white car accelerating and trying to pass you? Or would you have waited until it passed and repeat the game with the follow up car? I think indicating shows everyone behind you that you are going to change over to their lane, so they know it's not a good time to pass you.
    But overall really good video, I have my license for a few months now and I'm naturally doing a lot of things like you do in respect to planning ahead and so far, I haven't gotten myself into any unpleasant situations and was always prepared.

      @keith6400 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashley lets a silver car through after which there is a big space. The space is moving and the next car is only catching Ashley up very gradually. Whereas the cyclist is being caught a lot quicker. Ashley actually moves out because of a series of parked cars and in doing so can accommodate a subsequent cyclist which he already knew about and has factored both hazards in his plan. The white car driver will see the parked cars and even if he does not in order for him to collide with Ashley he would have to accelerate like a rocket which obviously will not happen. In any case white car is in lane 2, should know cars park in groups down this road and lane 1 vehicles may move out suddenly in front of him. He should easily anticipate this as it will likely be just before parked car groups. No drivers move out just in front of the white car on this occasion.

    A couple of days ago I was driving home on a dual carriageway when a driving school car over took me, going at probably around 40mph in a 30 zone. The car then proceeded to go through a red light at a pedestrian crossing. It wasn't your school but it was a terrible example for the instructor to set.
