    your vlog popped up while looking for pottery items ive not seen before. Finding you, i think is good, your new to sharing, which is great, it makes me feel that i can do it to. Ive been going to adult ed classes for several years, two and a half hours a week and i love it too. Its nice to see simple pottery, well presented and your little tips and tricks are just what we need, other channels are good, but they do miss out those little tip-bits which are so necessary. Thankyou, Ive joined your page along with the 110 others who like me are watching with interest. Believe in yourself and then others will believe in you too. off to watch your other videos, see you later. x

    I use that technique but I hold a wet sponge in my right hand to prevent mushrooming. Also helps to keep disc centered and edges smooth. Then I just bring the edge up with wooden rib.

    Would you put a clear glaze on it once it’s been bisqued fired ?

  • @balasubramanian4229

    Really nice video! Thanks for sharing your technique. I’d have loved to see how you wire off the piece and finish the bottom since that can sometimes be the hardest part of throwing flat objects.

    • @horseshoepottery
      @horseshoepottery  ปีที่แล้ว

      Next time I make one I’ll do a video 🙂 In the meantime, I wait until it is almost leather hard before I wire it off, which helps with warping. I then trim the bottom but usually don’t do a foot ring.

    • @balasubramanian4229
      @balasubramanian4229 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to try that. Wiring off when leather hard that is. I'm still pretty new at this, so lots of things to try and learn! :)

    Very nice. I did see one that stood up, which is a great way to save counter space. Any ideas on how to make that type? Thank you.

    • @horseshoepottery
      @horseshoepottery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you.
      I had to google stand up spoon rests lol. I didn’t know they existed. You could throw a tall-ish cylinder, wait for it to dry enough and cut about 1/4 of the wall out. You would want to leave enough room at the bottom to catch drippings etc. Once I’m healed enough I’ll give it a try. If it turns out ok I’ll record it and post it.
      If you try it, let me know how it works out

      @@horseshoepottery Thanks so much for your detailed and encouraging reply! We have such small kitchens here in Japan, and the counter space is at a premium, that the idea of a vertical spoon-holder is the only way to go. I think I'll make the bottom heavier than usual for a cylinder, so that it will support a soup ladle...

    • @horseshoepottery
      @horseshoepottery  ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure! Yeah I think a heavier bottom would be beneficial 🙂

    I’m all about the “love it or leave it” style of teaching. Someone can go to a university, and get a phd…that doesn’t mean they own any natural talent for their chosen art..I’m taking a few classes at a community college. I may get an associates degree, I don’t know. I’ve taken a few turning classes, and because of a physical issue I have, can’t use the wheel. But if you drew out I can make anything out of slab plaster.

    • @horseshoepottery
      @horseshoepottery  ปีที่แล้ว

      It took me a while to actually share my technique because I was worried I’d get raked over the coals by a ceramicist with university degree lol Then I figured why not just do it. If someone like me, without a degree or someone just starting out gets something out of it, that’s worth it to me. I’m not very good at slab work, so I envy you 🙂

    Hello 🌼i really liked your works.. I'm new at ceramics, so I wanted to ask if this paper is decopage paper? if not,where can I get it and whats the name of it? I actually found a lot of decopage transfer paper, but the seller guy told me it's made with decopage glue and also when it's finished on ceramics,He gold ne ; I need to apply glue and varnish it, but u know its different on ceramic works so I wanted to ask you if these are applied after the mud is baked, or if it should be wet mud, thank you and have a nice day

    • @horseshoepottery
      @horseshoepottery  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, they are called underglaze transfers. They silkscreen the underglaze onto rice, newsprint or tissue paper. I found it is best to apply them once the clay is leather hard but you can apply them to bisque as well. The clear glaze has to be zinc free, otherwise the transfer will smudge and run if the glaze has zinc in it. You can purchase the underglaze transfers from Ceramica Transfers, Elan Transfers, Plum Island Transfers and Sanbao Studios. There are other companies but these are the ones I use.
      If you have instagram you can look at my reels and find a couple where I apply the transfers to a mug. The method in this TH-cam video is not the only way I do it 🙂 my instagram is @horseshoe_pottery
      There are also over glaze decals but they are completely different. Decoupage would probably not work on ceramics. 🙂
