Australia bushfires: Mega blaze likely on Friday evening - BBC News

  • Two of Australia's bush fires are likely to merge into a so-called "mega blaze" on Friday evening, authorities have warned.
The merger is expected at the border of New South Wales and Victoria and has been feared for days.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison warned Friday would be "a difficult day in the eastern states" amid forecasts of heat, strong winds and dry lightning.
In South Australia, Kangaroo Island also faced an abrupt threat.
A spokesman for the New South Wales (NSW) Rural Fire Service told the BBC the merger of two fires - both of which are out of control - was "imminent" and expected at about 8pm (09:00 GMT).
The two fires at Dunns Road and East Ournie Creek has firefighters bracing for a difficult night - and aircraft won't be able to operate after dark.
More than 100 bushfires are burning in worst-hit NSW alone, but the danger is equally great in Victoria.

Living with the uncertainty of the possibility of devastating fires is traumatic. The air pollution is very harmful and makes it hard to breath. The county where I live in California has had catastrophic fires. In the past five years sixty percent of the county has burned. Our neighboring counties have all burned. We now live with our bags packed and ready to flee in a moments notice. The Australian fires are even more devasting. The loss of livestock, pets and wildlife is heartbreaking.
Australians are in our thoughts and prayers, Californians understand what you are going through. 😢💖

Let the fire burn the continent? That probably won't happen as there are natural limits on such things as wildfires. However, there isn't really much controlling of remote wilderness wildfires. Why do they pretend like they can make much difference?
But how do you propose to move 25 million Australians to the U.K.? I know they would all fit, but that is just not politically doable. That would be a massive migration that not even the Australians want to bother with. In a world in which human population hopefully grows largely "unchecked", we need more places for people to live, so evacuating all of Australia hardly makes any sense to me. I am pro-life, and so I have long advocated large families, because I believe it very good for human life to spread and for more people to benefit.
BTW, evolution theory is fake-science. The earth is around 5780 years old according to the Jewish calendar. Yes, plants will regrow though.

However, as more energy is made available our increasing population and lust for more power increases with it, no matter where it comes from.
Solar will never replace fossil fuels which it uses to build and replace anyhow. It is simply not good enough to compete on an energy invested vs energy returned basis.

After the Australian bushfire, it will suffer from a huge loss. Be it international students, tourism, and also people who consider moving in.
In fact, Australia is the 7/8th best country in the world, same as the U.S. It was no.6 best in 2016. But UK was no. 3 and now has stopped by 2 to no.5 best country.
After the bushfire incident I am 100% Australia will drop in its international rankings, including best country list, most desired immigration destination, and also more important, it's the livability. Melbourne was no. 1 between 2013 to 2016. But now it is no.2 according to 2019 data. And I am sure it could drop further, if it didn't drop out of the top 10, it could be lucky.

The point is that no amount of arsonists could create such unprecedented fires. The extreme heat in Australia is not just a fluke. There were unique patterns in rain, temperature, and wind that converged to scorch the continent, factors that scientists were able to detect in advance. Australia is deep in the throes of the accelerating climate crisis, facing not just extreme heat but changes in rainfall patterns. These shifts in turn stand to worsen other problems like drought and wildfires. Australia is facing a severe drought, spurred by three winters in a row with very little precipitation.
Please do your research and stop being a tool of misinformation and disinformation.
      Look what I found:
"Officials in the state of Victoria have also refuted arson as a major cause of bushfires. “Police are aware of a number of posts circulating in relation to the current bushfire situation, however currently there is no intelligence to indicate that the fires in East Gippsland and north-east Victoria have been caused by arson or any other suspicious behaviour,” a police spokeswoman told The Age on Thursday. In the State of South Australia, 10 people have been arrested since September for deliberate or reckless fire behavior.
The main cause of fire ignitions of Australia’s bushfires is dry lightning, essentially lightning from thunderstorms that don’t produce rain. “The majority of these bushfires have been generated by lightning strikes associated with weather and climate effects,” Dale Dominey-Howes, a professor of hazard and disaster risk sciences at the University of Sydney."

BBC news - thanks for this. PLEASE do a report on the 10,000 camels to be shot dead by the Australian government amid this crisis. I live in Australia and I am sickened by this. There are surely other options rather than mowing these camels down. More of Scott Morison's handiwork allowing this to go on.. Please include the camels in your next Australian fires report - I cannot believe this is going on when our animals are dying in fires else where.

The reason Liberal Scott Morrison got voted back in 2019, after 40 bad opinion polls in a row was the possibility of the dramatic loss of jobs in all the mining sectors. Opposition party was so anti coal, so much climate change agenda that many would have lost their jobs. Aussies want to feed their families and keep a roof over their head, if possible.
Here in West Australia, there are so many Solar Panels on house roofs feeding into the grid, the 1 coal fired power station we do have has difficulties regulating the grid power during the day due to Solar grid feed. There is also plenty of wind power Across Australia. Hydro power up north WA. So Electricity at least in West Australia is balanced. So no climate hype here.
Lastly, Love and Prayers to those in the East who have suffered loss. My church here in the west, in whom have many volunteer fire fighters have been praying for you.

Bushfires are an unfortunate fact of life in Rural Australia and the 2019 fires are probably the worst in the record books but bushfires happen here every year, along with the accompanying tragedies inflicted. It's heartbreaking but it happens every year just like the wildfires driven by the Santa Anna winds in California. The Kangaroo Island tragedy is man made. The Koala is an introduced species to the Island. They were placed there by the CSIRO in 1921 in the name of conserving the species, a noble goal. 18 Koala's were released and by 2001 their numbers had grown to 27,000. Around 10 years ago, KI Residents were complaining that the Koala population needed to be culled as there were not enough gum trees to sustain the Koala's and many of them were starving. By that time the 27,000 in 2001 had grown exponentially but I could only guess at those numbers. Before 1770, there were forests of gum trees covering the whole island (not now) but no Koala's. My point? Most probably there were no Koala's because bushfires would have had the same result then as in 2019. I am a devoted animal lover and it pains me to see these poor creatures suffering. Whenever Humankind tries to second guess Nature, look out for the consequences. Another catastrophe was the introduction of the South American Cane Toad in Queensland. That's another story for another day.

One of the things I have wondered about the California fires, and equally the Australian fire it why they aren't fought the same as aboard a Navy ship? The freshwater systems would be far too overwhelmed to successfully fight such fires, so why isn't sea water being used? I am not thinking of the idea of only airplanes being used, but setting up temporary large clay pipping systems and suitable pumps to get massive amounts of water to the sights where needed.

@@daguard411, we had a water crisis before these fires. Seeing as the de-sal plants sit idle for so much of the time I don't see why they couldn't be used to supply regional ares and take the pressure off river systems like the Murray Darling. Rural people have been paying for water to be trucked in for over a year and even towns as close as Goulburn have been under severe restrictions for ages. If the expense of pipelines is undertaken then the supply of fresh water would make it a better investment. It would also supply water for fire fighting.

I’m not sure about other states, but in New South Wales, extensive cuts were made to the budget of the Rural Fire Service early in 2019 (even with high fire risk for this summer). Normally back burning occurs during the winter, but due to the drought (dry winter and high winds) and budget cuts, the RFS was not able to do it to the same extent. Trees are normally not felled because a lot of Australian bush plants need to be burnt to reproduce, and now the fire fronts are so large that it is almost impossible to fell trees quickly and efficiently enough to contain the spread.

1 or 2° didnt do this... fire is fire and once it burns it burns. Australia has ALWAYS been a hot dry country. It's the controll hat got lost because of these changed politics (to protect wirldlife by not removing threes or preburn) that set the whole country on fire, because the fire can spread without any areas that prevent it.
I dont want to talk about climate change here... i just want to point out that THIS and people becoming more and more dumb (most fires started because people went out and made a campfire) and the systems that where in place since a very, very long time (to prevent this) got removed.
