Saw Kansas onboard the USS John F Kennedy CV-67 during the Christmas USO tour in 1988 while we was on our 1988-1989 Med Deployment. They rocked the hangar deck!
Awesome. I believe that's when Steve Walsh (aka, "the voice of Kansas", IMO) was back with the band. BTW, just saw KISS two days ago and posted some videos. A cool moment (again IMO but probably not for everyone 🙄) was when Paul Stanley took a timeout in the middle of the show to pay a tribute to our country, our flag and all those that are or have served in the armed forces. Then he had us all say the Pledge of Allegiance. Wish I recorded it but it's probably up somewhere...U-S-A!
I had the pleasure of seeing them in 74 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City Missouri, their first album and been a die hard fan ever since. Oh and by the way they were there with Foghat and Black Oak Arkansas
"The voice of Kansas" has no peers. Though I think Ronnie Platt has been doing an excellent job, at 63-years old even, taking over after Steve left the second time. I also enjoyed John Elefante's contributions after Steve originally left which were very different in style but possibly better suited to the type of popular music at that time (the 80's).
This entire show was excellent. My seat was probably 4-5 rows just behind where this video clip was shot. This was my 5th time seeing Kansas, the first time being in 78 or 79. About 15 years ago they did a free show in Blue Ash in northern Cincinnati which was awesome. I carried my vinyl of their first album with me and fortunately I was able to meet up with Rich and he signed it. When I heard they were going to be in Cincinnati for this Anniversary tour, I was logged into to Ticket Bastard the day tix went on sale punching buttons at 10am trying to grab decent seats. They're my all-time favorite band and I'm really glad to see that they're still out there rockin'. : )
Listening through headphones after a long night of partying so long ago was the only acceptable way to listen to this back in the day...what a masterpiece.
I have had this in album form...8-track...cassette....CD....and now DVD a few years ago....and this tune will always be undated for years to come.ROCK ON KANSAS....!!
I remember when Robby Steindhart said, "I know this sounds like a line, but the band is 10 years old today!" It was during the concert with John Elefante as the new frontperson. Gone are the keyboard handstands and the onstage energy, but that was a different group back then. Indeed, the music sounds great! Will always be one of my favorite bands, no matter the lineup !!!!
Kansas was Steve Walsh doing hand stands on the keyboard. Looks like Rich and Phil are the only original members. Sounds great but it’s not Kansas without Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh, Robbie Steinhardt and Smokin Dave Hope.
Lucky to have that. They're not spring chickens. Saw them the first time in Liberal Kansas the same weekend they made their original demo tape at the studio in Liberal. BTW the bar they played was a biker bar called Tiki Lounge.
If 2 original members left is your definition of a tribute band, you can add Boston, Blue Oyster Cult, ZZ Top, Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grand Funk Railroad, Doobie Brothers, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, just to name a few.
I used to turn my black lights on with all my black light posters on the walls of my bedroom somewhere in the mid 70's and listen to Magnum Opus/Father Padilla meets the perfect Gnat on the B side of the LP. Stoned out of my mind. Truly a band that has stood the test of time.
wish you guys would come to Scotland don't know if you've been as a support band but would love to see you been a fan since I first heard carry on my wayward son in 1976
I’m so glad I traveled from Australia to USA to see them 2 months before Steve Walsh retired. They always sounded great musically and vocallly. But… without that soaring vocal of Walsh…. It doesn’t cut it.
I still have a TDK cassette of the Point Of Know Return album a guy in my platoon in the USMC recorded for me on his Pioneer stereo while in Okinawa, Japan in 1983. It still sounds perfect after all these years. In fact, have plenty of cassettes from back in those days that still play and sound good. Now that you can get vinyl selling again, people can still record albums onto cassettes as long as you have a cassette deck.
I still have some cassettes out there in the shed, I had a zillion cassettes in the 80s . I think some one stole my cassettes out of my truck 3 times . I had a FISHER stereo in 87 when CD's came out it rock out some what like a pioneer. I had 6906 pioneer speakers in my truck back then they got stolen to@@Rm212-ks9eq
@Rm212-ks9eq Cassette tapes actually ARE making a "comeback" similar to vinyl several years ago. My thought it that they are "retro" and "cool" for the younger generations and provides nostalgia for the baby boomers...and the tapes are cheaper than vinyl and smaller and easier to store (possibly taking up less space than even CDs???). The 8-track tapes got "skipped over" so doubt there will be a rejuvenation of that format. So start making those "mixtapes", put them in your giant "boombox" that you carry around on your shoulder (wish I still had mine....) and start rocking/rapping/metaling(?).
Saw them about 30 years ago in the early 90 at the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta. I anchored my boat just over the river bank from the stage. They definitely sound better here. I think it was their sound system because the next night was Great White and they definitely had a better sound system.
One of the most under rated bands ever, they were light years ahead of the majority of the bands of their time, still are awesome. “Point of No Return!

They sound pretty decent, but sadly this really isn't Kansas any longer. Same with Chicago these days, just 2 left from the horn section. These beloved bands are a shell of themselves without anyone on vocals from the original. Getting old sux
This is not THIS bands 50th anniversary. No Kerry Livgren, Steve Walsh, Dave Hope or Robbie Steinhart. A couple of original guys with a good backing tribute band.
Steve Walsh hasn't been with the band since 2014. That's Ronnie Platt who took over lead vocals since then and ain't too shabby. He's been around the music industry since the 1980s and was also the vocalist for the underrated 1980s band Shooting Star but never recorded any albums with them (if you're a fan of 80s "hair metal" check out Shooting Star's stuff, in particular "Hang On For Your Life" which might give you one of those, "Holy crap, I remember that song" moments).

Elefante recorded only two albums with Kansas, Vinyl Confessions and Drastic Measures, before Walsh returned to the band. @@paulsullivan1650 John and his brother Dino have always been involved with Christian music and artists, in particular, the band Petra during the 1980's (another great band that relatively few have heard of due to their "Christian Rock" label). Kerry Livgren, Steve Walsh, Robbie Steinhardt, and Dave Hope were IMO irreplaceable. The performance here is okay, not bad or embarrassing to their legacy...but it's not what it was, not by a long shot. Sorry.
Do not agree should have been at the show. If it needed more volume he would have turned up the volume on the guitar at the source. These guys have been doing this a while 🫡 and much respect m. 💪🎸🤟
Hey!!!! What was that strange moment when the guys started the song with only their voices?? Very interesting! I've heard stories from long ago, but I just didn't believe it was possible. I'm amazed at how they got the auto-trac and auto-tune to work like that with for or five people singing at once. Some ancient words are coming back to me now. Harmony and harmonizing! If only people could sing and play without backing tracs and auto-tune. I bet it would be amazing and look very similar to what these guys just did! Must be some sorcery at work.
