  • This song hurts. Every damn time you listen to it, it hurts. But as a mom, I'm honored to be able to carry a little bit of Maya's pain with her, even for a few minutes. What a beautiful thing that this song exists...

My deepest condolences. I lost my father to cancer, indirectly, a long story. However loosing a child must be several hundreds magnitude worse..... I just can't comprehend how a young woman who has never been through that can write such a song of empathy and compassion. Taylor is very special...I hope the song has brought you a modicum of peace and closure whilst I'm sure you never really achieve either after a tragedy like that

Even though she was 29, hearing my mother screaming when I found my sister dead still hurts me to the core. She got a heart condition in 2003 caused by influenza attacking the heart and causing it to double the size it should be in the left ventricle. I found her dead in March 2015, tried to revive her, called an ambulance, called my parents, kept doing chest compressions, the paramedic came and told me to stop and said she was DOA (dead on arrival), I went into the bathroom and lay on the floor. I ended up blaming myself for 4 years that if I'd been home just an hour before, I could've saved her.

I cried with you girl, and I'm 73. I have 4 grown children, 3 grown grandkids and 5 more down to the age of three, all healthy and every time I hear of a sick kid I get feelings of guilt. My sister-in-law lost 2 toddlers to Batten's syndrome and I wonder how she survived. Don't know that I could have. In 2003 I suffered a number of catastrophic losses and grieved so much that my eyes have not fully recovered. But I learned that every bout of weeping, crying, or wailing is a healing step. The losses never come back but the pain of grieving somehow makes them easier to carry. I've termed grief an exquisite pain.

I’m a 52 yr old man with no kids and this song breaks mean into little pieces every time. I hate to know what it does to mothers and even worse mothers that have lost a child. It’s without doubt one of the best songs she has ever written. Is it a favourite song? No but that is precisely because it’s so raw, stark and painful. I just can’t comprehend how a young woman who had never gone through anything like that can write a song of such empathy and compassion. The line that gets me is “the hand me downs you won’t grow into” because it’s really about all the person he would have become and all the possibilities that were so cruelly torn away…

When I listen to Ronan, I always picture my mom. She also died because of cancer when I was 9. And even though I was young the lyrics makes me remember those times before she left us. It was so hard. It took me at least 10 years before I can talk about her without crying. They say losing a parent hurts but it can never compare to the feeling of losing a child. I can't even begin to imagine how someone recovers from that

Anyway, Lori's mother passed away when she was 7, and wrote a song called "Leaving This Life". I don't know if it will help you or not, but I thought of it when I read your comment. Kelsea, my deepest condolences to your sister. There isn't a word to describe the loss of a child. If you ever read Maya's blog, she had a little girl years after Ronan passed, and she described the terror of watching her constantly for signs that she might be sick, too. To quote Taylor's song, "Epiphany,": 'some things you can't speak about.' My best to you and your family. You were so brave to do this, and I cried right along with you.
