I've converted 3 Fujitsu LF keyboard recently: T111, T010 and Epson Q503A. It's not actual conversion but controller replacement. I've used Black Pill STM32 development board and QMK firmware. The whole procedure was quite easy: you don't have trace the whole PCB, just find rows/columns and use matrix debugging in QMK to find a position of each key in matrix.
Damn, the keycaps on that MBC 550, especially that odd enter key, are gorgeous. I don't know why, but I love those drab sort of colors that were popular on keycaps back then.
Nicely done Tom. At one point I only liked clicky switchs but thanks to your videos my horizons have been widened. I think I'll rotate in the Tandy 3000 later today.
I dont know if its just me but I really like the look of the slider on these switches. These and space invaders look so cool compared to stuff like mx mount or alps
Nice switches make for a nice keyboard. It is a real shame that Thomas was not able to get it to work with standard converters. Did Sanyo computers have a non-standard interface? Or is it more likely that one or two components on the PCB need to be replaced, possibly some electrolytic capacitors? Those are often swapped out every eight years on industrial PCBs.
thomas: "you no longer really need to get something like this if it's the smoothness you're after" oh okay glad to see he isn't just always biased toward vintage keyboards also thomas: "but if it's sound that you're after, it's still worth considering, I'd say" I thought these weren't usable with modern computers - considering for what?
I don't know why modern switch manufactures haven't adapted this design, it seems like it would be a relatively economical switch to produce, and it has a clear advantage to other designs in terms of smoothness.
I wonder --- would it be feasible to weight a modern keyswitch by turning upside down and pouring resin into it? Or lead shot, maybe. Of course you'd have to make sure not to foul the mount, but on Cherry mounts the cross-shaped socket is usually on a stalk, so there'd be lots of space. Would this improve the sound any?
Personally, I like the sound of the actual key switch mechanics, but I don't care at all about the "keycap bottoming out against the material of the switch casing" sound. On my daily driver, which uses Cherry MX Blue switches, I have silicon o-rings to prevent the "clack" noise, so that the sounds I end up with, is mostly just the click of the leaf spring inside the switch. This is why I'm also not a fan of linear switches. Tactile switches are the way to go. :D
@@Chyrosran22 I posted my comment before watching the video to completion and now I understand why the tile mentions Sanyo, it's because of the computer the keyboard was bundled with.
im seriously considering getting one of those steelseries apex pro keyboards; does anyone have typing sounds of it with sa or cherry keycaps? wondering if the sound can be improved. not even sure if it can be lubed or anything like that

My grandfather had one of these and that THOCC sound just made me smile immediately
Where is it now?
My grandfather never owned a computer...
@@0name933 oh, not a clue. He uses a MacBook from 2011 now and is happy as a clam
@@YourCitizen ah yes, scissor switches
God that thock is amazing. I'd love to hear an extended typing demonstration of this.
made my night. I'm having a rough week and a new video from you certainly brightens it up a bit.
Whatever has happened this week I hope you get over it soon, heads up and stay strong!:)
Keyboard therapy
Always a good day when there's a new review up. Thanks for the great content Thomas!
It's up there with Alps in terms of sound. Definitely needs a TDXL.
Think I already did it xD .

That's the audience we like to read from....tinkers
I have one of these too and would love to be able to use it.
I just got a same looking Sanyo keyboard and this might be something I will do to it someday
What an amazing keyboard, I bet you could spend the whole day typing on that thing and not regret a minute

that giant ass space key *with no stabilizers* has less rattle than a single MX blue
Where does he say they're not stabilized? He said the stepped keys are not stabilized. Space sounds like it is.
@@justinc8157 i just assumed because the stepped ones aren't, either way my point still stands
@@musicboi5271 Your main point does not stand.

What a beautiful keyboard. Love the thocc
Huge space bar and the Ctrl in the proper spot. 👍
I dont know if its just me but I really like the look of the slider on these switches. These and space invaders look so cool compared to stuff like mx mount or alps
Fujitsu Peerless and other Fujitsu switches look rather bizarre.
The space bar... its a damn goliath
Wonder if it's longer than the one on my NEC APC-H412
Who the hell would ever need a space bar like that? What a monster!
Chances are that you will be able to find it.
I have one of these, wish I could get it working with a modern computer. the XT keyboard layout is by far my favorite.
I have one too, you can fully convert it with a controller swap, mine works over USB with NKRO now :)
@@Anonymousjoe64 links to resources? Atleast when it comes to teensys, I never seem to figure out where to start
nice, fujitsu leaf springs
also apparently according to the typing demo, this is the tai hao apc semi mechanical keyboard
I always enjoy your reviews 😊

Ahh those are some wonderful keypress sounds.
Can We Just imagine the satisfaction sound we just heared?
If it existed in an AT format I'd totally get one... sounds awesome

People more tech-savvy than me have converted Fujitsu boards to modern computers.
@@Chyrosran22 Got it. Thanks for the heads up!

No spring ping either.
Chinese mx clone manufacturers can’t being original with design and Fujitsu think that membrane is economical
THAT SOUND, THO. daaaaaamn

It's gorgeous.
YES! Its saturday keyboard rhythms, you sir go and get the biggest goose in the shop here is half a crown keep the change👍
Love the sound
I really do like these keycaps. Would be nice to see a cherry compatible set with this style.
9.75u spacebar...... holy hell if that space bar isn't an absolute unit
as someone in the u.s. i love hearing his imperial unit jokes
its too bad that it doesn't actually convert. still great joke
We need the pen holder across the top to make a comeback for real
Thomas' cuckoo clock is still going strong in the background
I appreciate 'The Simpsons' reference when describing the weight for the Imperialists...
Beautiful keyboard and sound. Were there tactile or clicky versions of this switch?
There was a clicky version as well. I even have a keyboard with them, but it's in very bad condition.
Chyrosran22 - have you heard about DSKY Display?
Did you know they did made mechanical (almost) RGB keyboard in the '60 ???

kickass board!
I’d say that rivals some Alps keyboards for sound.
I love linears. I wonder how hard it is to get something similar that functions
Hey there! Could I ask what switches are used for your intro? They're an extremely loud snap and if they exist I'd like to see where I could get them
That spacebar is L O N G
Just picked one of these up today at an eWaste center but its branded "Logitec". Definitely needs some cleaning though.

@chyrosran22 your practice sentence in ur description is literally from the last Gear keyboard video. Are u haunted by that cursed keyboard? :p
Lmao
It has a SPAAAAAAAACCCCCCEEEEEEBAR
