2024 UPMAS Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr. RODY G. SY

The 2024 UPMAS Lifetime Achievement Award honors the legacy of Dr. Rody G. Sy- outstanding clinician and cardiologist, exemplary educator and mentor, esteemed researcher, public health visionary and institution builder from the Golden Jubilarian Class of 1974. Dr. Sy dedicated his life in making Filipinos live healthier lives and protected from noncommunicable diseases. As faculty member of the UP College of Medicine and the Philippine General Hospital, he trained generations of medical students, residents and clinicians in honing their clinical skills and acumen. Dr. Sy also led landmark research projects like LIFECARE , a 10-year cohort study involving more than 3,000 participants to better understand cardiovascular risk factors, the Philippine Cardiovascular Genomics Study Group study to understand the role of genetics in the varying response to cardiovascular medications and the Odyssey Outcomes Trial to treat lipid disorders. Dr. Sy also led various local and national professional organizations and was recipient of various awards that speak of the esteem he enjoyed from among his peers. The UPCM community is also most grateful for his pivotal role in the establishment of the Henry Sy, Sr. Medical Sciences Building that provides world class teaching facilities for the College.
