General idea behind all those swings and giants - angular momentum conservation. You want to be as far from the center of rotation as possible before the lowest point of swing and as close to it as possible after the lowest point. This will help in building up amplitude and controlling direction of rotation. Also being rigid is required, otherwise it is impossible to reach more than 180 degree amplitude.

If you get to the top with your feet on, like on the first attempt and jumb out to a long hang, you should be able to generate enough force to swing over in long hang like a back giant. That requires a lot of courage and grip strength to hold on but I see it working.

i feel like ninja training is just a catalog of dubious exercises.
Back in the 80s there was this swiss ice figure skater called Denise Bielmann and she created something called the "Bielmann Pirouette", which was basically her standing / rotating on one leg while holding the other one above her head with both arms.
