It's a typical RW gimmick - to fool low-information voters into thinking you're "cutting waste."
Trump's pal Macri (Milei's political godfather) did the same thing in 2015-19: he downgraded ministries - but then expanded the number of secretariats and sub-secretariats by *75%* .
His top officials stuffed every manner of relative, friend and mistress into these new posts - plus internet trolls (as a reward), and even Queen Máxima's disabled sister (to ingratiate himself with the Dutch Royals).
The policy was jokingly referred to as "love in the time of austerity."
Yes, it was longstanding practice (like here in the U.S.) - but, again, he expanded patronage by 75%, while fooling his zombie voters.
Same with budget deficits, which quadrupled in peso terms.

I don’t think it’s a trumpification of Argentina.. you just have to understand that there was a whole social context behind the win of milei, like you said, three digit inflation, more than half of the country poor, corruption everywhere, so people were tired and they chose him. I think it’s understandable.

Exactly, they try to use populist as a bad term. All democratic governments should be populist, as in they're supposed to serve the majority of the population and pass bills that are popular amongst the people.

It feels rather disingenuous and un sophisticated for David to make this comparison. It's such an American thing to do... To force the world into a framework that makes sense from an American perspective.
First of all, Milei is a liberal. Yes, look it up. I know... It means something different in the US. But Milei and his party are liberals in Argentina.
Secondly, he is a libertarian. He is absolutely committed to small government and a balance budget. Neither of those things resembles Trumpism.
Third, Argentina is not the U.S. People need to stop looking down on other countries because their solutions don't make sense to us. Argentina is facing hyperinflation or about to face it. Radical change is needed.
I don't know if what Milei proposes will work. But I am eagerly observing the experiment. I find it disappointing for David Pakman to speak so ignorantly and in a partisan fashion about this. I expect him to be a bit more sophisticated and nuanced.

The thing is that Milei has no legislative support, so he will have to negotiate and many of the most outlandish ideas won't pass. This is the problem with politics: None of the options voters are given are good. The choices are BAD, WORSE, and WORST. We have this problem in Canada. 3 main parties who are all failures - either federally or provincially - to one degree or another. Yes, it's not as bad as Argentina or even the US. But it's still pretty damn pathetic.

    • @zxbc1
      @zxbc1 ปีที่แล้ว +12

It's not the "problem" of politics. It's the feature of politics. Your "good" is always someone else's bad, and even if you're happy with all the choices, someone out there is decrying them as bad worse and worst. It's not some new thing, it is how it works. In this case, it is a case of "bad and worse" for the majority of the people, but for some (especially the rich and powerful) these are actually very good options - they will most certainly benefit from either one. The actually "pathetic" part about all this is that people who can admit that it is a choice between bad and worse continue to choose "worse" because "worse" is new and "bad" is old. Their concept of progress is that change is always better.

He has said he communicates with his dogs (including a dead one) via a mystic, and these dogs inform him on issues of general strategy, political analysis, and the economy. He had a dog that died in 2017, and he believes they met in a past life, the dog was a lion at the Roman Colosseum, and now this dog sits next to God up in heaven, and Milei and his dog speak directly to God and are currently on a mission given to them by God. Other countries in Latin America dolarized their economies . In my country El Salvador, we adopted the US dollar in 2001, it has kept our economy stable . Actually, Javier Milei is not a far right winger. He is a self described libertarian (which means being fiscally conservative and socially liberal).
For those of you who do not know what Libertarianism entails (not to be confused with Liberalism), here's a quick crash course:
    1) Let everyone do whatever they want, as long as they don't infringe on other's liberty, property and fruits of their labor (i.e. taxation... which leads to the second point)
    2) Low to no taxation. Government should be funded through altruism and philanthropy (So if you want the government to hand out subsidies and tax breaks, shoot rockets up into the sky, provide other countries with military/humanitarian aid, by all means: write them a check. Just don't force others to do so who don't agree with that manner of tax-payer's money spending). This would also give the government an incentive to be less corrupt, work efficiently and to listen to their constituencies (because they actually need to perform and keep the customers (a.k.a. we the people) happy)
    3) The only centralized top-down areas of government should be National Security and Administration of Justice
    4) The idea is to encourage individual responsibility and freedom
    5) Libertarians believe in innovative free-market solutions (even for roads, infrastructure, health, retirement etc.) to drive up competition, thereby driving down the cost and making it high-quality. Just think of the iPhone, Flatscreen TVs, Health procedures (which ironically (I wonder why?) aren't covered by insurance such as Lasek, rhinoplasties, and other free market conveniences/products and services we are able to afford much more easily than the rest of the world.
    6) Libertarians support even the farthest left-wing ideas including drug decriminalization, rehabilitative justice, LGTQB-rights, gay marriage, abortion and euthanasia... as long as it doesn't infringe on other people's rights, it should be 100% legal.
So in summary, libertarians want gun-towing gays to be able to defend their property while smoking pot and paying low taxes... seriously! This should be possible in a free society.
People can say what they want about libertarians, but whatever neo-lib/neo-con social democracy solutions we've had in the past couple hundreds of years... haven't worked... perhaps freedom (and a "live-and-let-live" attitude) is the answer. It also eliminates the ridiculous division, hatred and polarization we have in our country.
    Just food for thought💯

    • @Washanuga
      @Washanuga ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm not sure why you're toting this generalized, American-centric notion of libertarianism considering it does not apply to Milei. He's a self-described minarchist and anarcho-capitalist. He strongly opposes some of the things you mention, like abortion and euthenasia, and limiting the immigration of people he'd deem undesirable. He rose to power using the rightwing populist tactics of Trump and Bolsonaro. I know he wants to dollarize and abolish the central bank, but in true libertarian fashion, I don't think he really has well thought out plans and policy.

Well no. People on the right believe that the best outcome for society is achieved when individual rights and civil liberties are paramount and the role - and especially the power - of the government is minimized. Libertarianism / Minarchism and all the ideologies based on Classical Liberalism are on the far-right side.

David, sir, given your Argentine origins, might you be able to offer us a bit of a history lesson / insightful thoughts about the Peron era ?
Over the last decade or so I’ve developed an interest in this topic, but have found very little in terms of documentary films, discussions, or other easily accessible sources of information. While the film adaptation of Evita (which I love, btw), does provide a tantalizing glimpse of the era, the few documentaries I’ve seen listed on major streaming platforms all seem to be “unavailable at this time”.
It seems like there could be some interesting parallels to explore between then and now. Having been a dramatic and impactful episode in history, the void in coverage is frustrating.
PS: As a bonus, certain of Andrew L. Weber’s lyrics from Evita definitely offer golden opportunities for Trumpian parody. I highly recommend listening with this in mind 🤓

Perón was *a very authoritarian* social democrat: very pro-labor, women, minorities, religious freedom (first to include Jews in government) - and very much against corporate monopolies, absentee landowners, and holy rollers.
He also slashed the (then-bloated) defense budget, and plowed the savings into social programs and public works - while paying off most foreign debt (which he warned would be used to plunder the country, if allowed to grow - as in fact later happened).
But as his censorship, persecutions and harassment show, he was a real authoritarian - like almost all Argentine presidents before him (and many of those after him, most recently Macri). Nothing like the 1976 dictatorship Milei admires - but still.
He also turned the country's tax-cheat elites against their own country - which they've since feel "was lost to the black-heads" (i.e. Perón's often mestizo supporters).
If you combined *Bernie Sanders' policies, with Trump's tactics and crooked ethics* - you'd probably get someone like Perón (except he was the one coup'ed by right-wingers).
Latin politics are full of layers and drama - especially Argentina's.

@@tenorly Peron sounds pretty good at first. Too bad he went back. If Milei admires the junta of the 70's Argentina is in big trouble. Dirty War, infamous campaign waged from 1976 to 1983 by Argentina's military dictatorship against suspected left-wing political opponents. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 30,000 citizens were killed; many of them were “disappeared”-seized by the authorities and never heard from again. I fervently Argentines don't allow that. Then corruption, bad as it is, is better.

      You're not kidding.
Milei is an *avowed* authoritarian, who has threatened to "use troops" protesters (which he knows his shock policies will trigger), and even named that lush *Patricia Bullrich* to the Security Ministry.
Last time she held the post (2015-19), she was embroiled in numerous *warrantless surveillance* scandals - including *Super Mario Bros* (1,500+ public figures spied on -including allies), *d'Alessiogate* (millions extorted from businessmen, who were smeared if they didn't pay), *Submarinegate* (espionage on the families of the 44 killed in the 2017 ARA San Juan tragedy - believed to be a cover-up of a UK attack), and *GestaPRO* (a ring set up to frame troublesome labor leaders).
When asked why her phone number showed up on extortionist Marcelo d'Alessio's phone, Bullrich scoffed that "her grandson must've picked up the phone" (!).
So you can imagine what might happen. And the right regularly uses - and abuses - facial recognition tech in Buenos Aires (whose local gov't they control).
