@@Jojo-o6o6w You qualify based on time not on who you beat. Her time was good enough to qualify. Also, most swimmers retire before they turn 30, so yes this is a big deal.
That's actually crazy. Most Olympics swimmers are in their early 20s or even late teens. The best of luck to her, that's already a huge accomplishment!
@Kwildcat13 as far as finding a decent man and starting a family then yes.. washed up after your 20s.. its just human biology.. but as an athlete i see no reason why you cant be one.
She’s a freaking beast, good God almighty, to be that old and cranking qualifying times is absolutely insane. I’ll say this she looks like a lean mean swimming machine ready to do battle. Being old, a lot older, I’m pulling for her to make this dream come true. She is an inspiration to young and old - male female, it’s call guts and determination with BIG drive.
im confused.. what does it mean to 'qualify for the olympic swim trials"? and just exactly who did she beat to get that? Im assuming she beat everyone in the USA?
I've always thought mid-40s was still young, especially these days. We don't smoke the way the Boomers or Silent generation did, and scientists know how to optimise diet and nutrition. Fit people are fitter than ever, and unhealthy people are unhealthier than ever.
Yeah but the boat is doing a lot of the work there. In swimming, it's all you. There was a 70-something (I think) at a recent Olympics in one of the equestrian events. There again, it's not the athlete doing most of the work.
@@AF-pw5ct LOL. Look up these boat classes.... like International 14 or 18 footers in Auckland. It's all sailor when it's dinghy sailing(not keelboats).
The purpose of this video was to show us the oldest person to qualify for the Olympic swim trials. I just looked up the oldest Olympic athlete to win a medal, and a gentleman named Oscar Swahn from Sweden holds the record for the oldest to win Gold at 64 years old, and the oldest to win any medal, a Silver at 72. These were in what was called Running Deer shooting back in 1912 (Gold) and 1920 (Silver).
Absolutely astonishing. After 20 years. Hope she makes Olympic feam. Would probably beat a lot of men much younger than her as shown when she beat that 17 year old guy.
If journalists investigate a bit deeper into her career and into the sport, they will detect that there is no such think as a "last shot" or "try" for this swimmer. Or for many other fast gals and blokes in the pool. There is a thing called "Masters Swimming" ... and her specivic achievement is part of a certain lifestyle that exemplifies Masters Swimming very well. Stay active and healthy, remain focused and fast ... the rewards will be similar to this one, like qualifiying for the Olympic Trials.
Exactly - they might want to Google the name Shane Gould, who, at 47 qualified for the Australian Olympic trials in 2004. Shane also won Australian Survivor in her fifties. (And of course held every freestyle world record in the 1970s.)
I wonder what the one guy will choose to lead with. Surely something uplifting, as this news report is about her making the Olympic Trials at freaking 46. Guy: "I'm normally out faster than her" 🙄
I think breaststroke makes this a little easier. I swam fly and my shoulders are destroyed. All that being said, thats fucking amazing. Good luck to her.
You're the one who needs a dope test. Gaby isn't at all that exceptional - other female swimmers have qualified for Olympic trials in their late 40s. One Shane Gould for example.
Doping. Ha, I'm so cynical! I hope I'm wrong, but it just doesn't add up that a sprinter would peak at that age. VO2 Max usually peaks in your 20s and declines afterward. Incidentally, I'm a 46yo man and run half marathons and 10Ks regularly, and even though she's dramatically more athletic and talented than me, our basic physiologiy of declining fast twitch muscle fibers are similar. If she were an endurance swimmer, it would be believable, bc aerobic capacity can increase into your 40s-50s, which is why there are so many older marathoners, but I just can't understand why she'd be achieving her best times in the 100-200m now instead of 10-20 years ago.

Persistence and consistency. Way to go.
I betting you are correct. She never allowed herself to get out of shape so a comeback is very doable
