Bought a 72 CB350 in 1983 for $350. My first motorcycle of any kind. Had it for 3 months and the timing chain grenaded. Have wanted another CB ever since. Mine was an exact twin for this bike. Hippy gold and all. Lol. Great to see this old girl revived and going again. I will have another someday, I hope. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane and really learn from and enjoy your channel.

Old home week for me. My first bike in 1980 was a 1969 CB-350. I have wrenched most of what you have gone through and I was anticipating what you were going to say during many parts of your monolog.
My bike came from Southern New Hampshire too and it gave me many years of reliable service, but after close to 50K miles the right cylinder valve guides and rings were shot and and timing chain tensioner was failing. So it got put in the back of the garage in 1991 and it is now my own personal barn-find. After we moved from California to Virginia in 1995 I have stored it in my garden shed and it will be a restoration project for me in the next year or so. Thanks for videos. I love to see old machines come back to useful life!

Thank you so much! I am not a mechanic by any means, but I enjoyed the hell out of bringing a 77' CB750F back from the dead years back. I learned my lesson on the money pit aspect the hard way on it. I have a few other bikes I tinker with, but was gifted a Honda GB500 that has sat for years, only 1,800 original miles, pristine minus sitting, and your videos are really helping me as to how to approach doing it justice properly.

My cousin had a CB350 like that one after he got out of the army in 1973. He let me use it one day to commute to college one day because my brother had to use my car. It was a fun commute that I will never forget. A couple years later I splurged on a CB750 and drove it all year long in Omaha, even in the winter when the streets were dry. I sold it when I moved to an apartment that didn't have a garage. I really loved those old Hondas. Wish I still had my 750.

Hi Mustie, the float chamber was crushed like that because the previous owner repaired a leak using a gas torch which heated up the air inside it, when it cooled and the air couldn`t get back in , it imploded. Paul.

I picked up a 1970 CB 350 looking exactly like yours in Berkeley, about 1977 and nice looking bikes they are and very fun to ride too! Mine needed a new cam and nothing else and I rode it for several years in the Owens Vally, CA. on & off road and it was a blast. My first bike, a few years earlier was a second hand '67 Honda 305 Superhawk I used for school for a year or so. Later I also picked up a basket '72 CL450 in Seattle & put together and later bought a '70 CB 750 which I also enjoyed. I never liked balancing the carbs, float levels or working with the points & ignition timing and I was happy when I picked up an '88 Suzuki 1100 GS which seemed a lot more trouble-free! Now a days I use a Yamaha Gladiator around town and my son bought a KTM 390 recently and we love that! I really enjoyed watching your process of discovery and remedy in this video~ great work!

Hondas seem to be the gold standard in older Japanese bikes. Have had a couple, worked on many others. Wiring in headlights is a common problem in all of them, all brands of that era. Good set of comeback project videos. Kudos ! !

Rex Southon. Enjoying your videos and then I saw your Honda 350, it bought back memories
of my days on a Honda 175 which I road in New Zealand South Island over the Southern Alpes. I was in my 40s back then and loved riding but alas it's all a memory now as I'm now 79
and unable to ride any more. Thank you for the memories.

Great video....that old puppy brings back so many memories. I had one of those like that in the scrambler version, in the 70's. I use to ride it from Hunting Beach Cal to Riverside when I got an apprentice job with Pep Boys, doing electrical work. Froze may ass of going to work, in the winter, but had many great memories. What a joy to see one again. Being a bike mechanic, gives you a great advantage, but very informative to those trying to maintain their bikes....presented and edited beautifully. What a great thing U-tube is. Thanks so much for sharing.

About 25 years ago I found a complete CB 175, mid 70's in a dump leaning up against a fence. I asked the attendant if I could have it and he of course said no, taking anything from the dump wasn't allowed. I offered him 20 bucks and he said "I'll help you load it , just do it quick" LOL. Called the DMV back then with the vin and they actually gave me the owners name, I looked in a real phone book, found him and he sent me the title! Rich guy cleaning out the garage. 2 tires and an ignition switch (no keys) and me and a huge red helmet drove it to college for a semester! This was a fun vid to watch! Thanks Mustie!

I grew up in England, at the time it was VERY difficult to get a car license, but easy to get a moped & then a motorcycle license. The CB 175 was everywhere, if you had a CB 350 you were a God. Yours even has the preferred color. Actually, over there it was colour.

I know that bike inside and out and had the same color. From the 350 I graduated to a 1971 CB 450 as I wanted more power, liked the disk brake, but couldn't afford the CB750. I rode my 450 from Chicago to Seattle to Los Angels, back to Chicago (and all points in between) in 1972. I was a 20 year old adventurer and was blessed by what I did and saw. The 450, totally stock with no faring, took me about 15,000 miles that trip and cruised 75-85 mph all day long day after day. Accumulated 65,000 plus miles before I let it go. Paid $1200 for the 450 new. The 350, though fun, was just a tad too light though I met a kid on a CB160 who had come from Cleveland and was in Yellowstone National Park camped next to me. I guess too small was in the eye of the owner and what you could afford. We rebuilt his clutch while there and he was off to the races again. Wonder where he ended up? Nice video. Brought back fond, fond memories. At 66 years of age I can still feel both bikes under me. I haven't ridden for 30 years but I know I could hop on that thing and make her fly...and safely. ;)

Man! You truly have a gift, your ability to make old motors run again is amazing. I don't know about where you live but I'm from Cali, between San Francisco and Palo Alto. Those bikes make great Cafe bikes. Put GSXR front legs on it, drop bars and a single seat, maybe rear sets and you are pimpin as they say! Guys are making a good living doing just that. Great videos as always. Thanks!!

I guess it did need some tender loving care. Dirt and rust. Nature is tough on mechanical things. I'm amazed how you tediously work and talk us through all that you're doing. Outstanding mechanic you are. Enjoy watching work. You're calm, patient and collected and you think things out. Great Work! I've been listening to you without my hearing aid. I thought I heard you say a few curse words but wasn't sure until I turned on the CC. It's okay though, we all say those words when things don't go right. I'd like to see how you could tackle a Honda 550 or 750. Four carburetors to synch up. Preferrably oil cooled.

the way my Dad taught me how to find the smallest holes in floats was to heat water to near boiling while the water heats up put the float in the freezer, the cold will contract the air molecules in the float, then take the float and put it in the hot water as the float heats up the air expands and blows out the holes. simple.

This is it, love these Hondas. I took my first endorsement on a CB400, it belonged to an army friend. Then I started riding my girlfriend''s CB 125. Until I bought my first motorcycle, an XL250. I have a tradition with Honda's in the 70's and 80's and now again, after I bought a CB500X. Great work there, man, inspiring me to get one of those 70's or 80's Honda's city bikes (CBs).

13 years old, 12 acres of farm and hills, carbs held in with duct tape (Dry rotted rubber) cheap gas, and the memories. Hill jumps, dirt flying, tape on the seats. Stopping after a jump, and letting it idle, while reaching down to pick up the carb hanging from the throttle cable. pop, pop, pop, it is running on the other bank, insert carb back while its running and burrrrrrrrrr away we go. It was so hard to crank because I was skinny and 13 and maybe 75 lbs wet so I had to learn to just keep it running and re-attach the carb. is there such a thing as well made junk? this one was just that for me.

This sure does bring back a lot of memories ! I bought a 1971 cb 350 same color as yours from Dick Klamfoth Honda in Columbus Ohio . Right off the show room floor $ 680.00 tax title out the door. It was a nice bike very smooth and was the first Honda that I owned that would do an honest 100 mph . I rode that bike until it had a little over 10000 miles with no problems . Then I was out for a ride one day and it started running on one cylinder nursed it home and started checking out the ignition I thought maybe one of the coils went bad . I unfortunately was not that lucky , long story short the cam chain tensioner had started to disintegrate . After I tore it down and went to order parts for it I found out this was a common problem at around that mileage . A lot of aggravation over a composite cam tensioner . Sorry for rambling and good luck!

mustie1 easy way to check for a miss is to check the exhaust up front [ a cold pipe is the miss, a hot one is running]. also those carbs had a problem with the diaphrams on top they would leak and cause pour idle and performance. the rubber would tear so the wouldn't lift the slides properly

Back in the late 60's and early 70's I owned all three models of the Honda 350; the CB350 (a pure street bike), the SL350 (a dirt bike) and the CL350 (a cross between an off-road and street machine). I remember the engines generated 25HP. In their day, the CB and CL models were actually touring machines --- people road them all over the country. The CB450 twin with double overhead cam was made for a few years, but not in the numbers of the 350 which was made for many years. These were the largest Japanese engines made at that time and were consider to be behemoths. Things remained that way until '69 when the CB750 was introduced, followed by the monster Kawasaki 900cc Z1 in 1973. The Z1 would stomp anything on two-wheels, and the superbike had been invented. 1975 saw introduction of the Gold Wing which was intended by Honda to be a sports bike, but was turned into a tourer by riders. Honda caught on and in a couple of years the GW was the undisputed King of touring machines where it would remain for many years.
Your rat 350 brings back many memories. Oh! I almost forget that the 350 was also made as a 4-cylinder. Tiny bores. Remember those?

I'm much more interested in restoring old bikes than cars. Bikes are just more accessible. Everything's right there. You can just lift the engine onto the bench if needed. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for old bikes in the coming years after watching this. Much more fun than getting a neglected old generator or lawn mower running.

I've watched a few of you r videos and just subscribed to the channel as I love the content (O love to tinker with old stuff too). The Virago video is what first caught my attention (I'm currently riding an '86 XV 1100). I really appreciate the DIY spirit and the re-use mentality. So many guys seem to just say "Buy this and rebuild that...." Gets old buying $40 rebuild kits just to find out if something will run. Keep the great content coming!
A quick question, however, what is it that you're using to clean up the carbs and floats? It looks like it does a really good job.

Those ultrasonic cleaners are a lifesaver. Mine made the old bing carbs on my old BMW r75/5 look like new. The bike has NEVER run so good.

Very cool ....you should build yourself a sonic carb cleaner.....Years ago , I stopped using the Kleenflo carb cleaner ( Phenol) I got a SS sink from a school and welded it up and silicone a couple of 6x9 speakers to its bottom and hooked it up to my power amp and signal gen and vibrated my q jets carbs clean with a degreaser soap and water ...It worked great and I did Not loose the colouring of the Rochester carbs ...Just a thought & with today , u could use a Bluetooth speaker that's powered , and use your smart phone ...lol ... Great fun here and thanks for posting

In 73 my girlfriend had one of those and I was on a Harley. Never played with her bike, just her. But I would like to have an old Honda for sure.

Still have my mom's honda same thing just a 175 twin.(Me and and mom were watching this definitely brought back some memory's for her to see one running) About same condition running wise now. No idle circuit either carb. If you play with the chokes you can get it to idle and run around nice. Just need to take time play with the carbs. Oh and needs a muffler for the right side. Its on my ever growing list.......... Nice work getting it going!

I looked online and you can not only get every part for that carb and rebuild kits.
You can even get new carbs.
There's even collector groups online that meet and ride together.

I had the 1971 CB 350 and the Trail 350. I loved them. But they viberated a lot and that was rough on a long ride. My first bike was a CB 50 and i wore that thing out.
