Thank you, Kat! The other day I saved a mama wolf spider from my pool with babes on her back. I had NO fear for the first time in my life! Mama gave me a small threat pose when I eased her off the pool skimmer but when she realized I was trying to help, she went on her way. I was so happy.
As a recovering arachnaphobe: I think people are constantly forgetting that you are learning through your own experiences and that you are not doing this purely for entertainment. This isnt any different than people breeding dogs and losing one or two puppies in the process (and I say this as a vet tech as well). Several factors go into breeding, some of which are not always in your control.
I think some cannibalizing is natural in jumping spider breeding, but others swear it doesn’t happen until they’re older and it’s better to keep them together. In my experience separating early on is more work but I always have less losses this way. So if someone is lucky enough to breed these I’d separate earlier rather than later despite what they heard to be on the safe side. Thank you.
Well it's a bigger deal to lose couple of puppies and a risk that it's your fault as it's not really natural but with spiders they have so many babies so it's just natural some will always die even if you are the best breeder.
As a child,I was scared of spiders,Now ,I keep in mind at all times Wich ones I want to avoid,But they would all rather avoid me more than I'd want to avoid them,Kat can point out and I'm sure provide pics of the us found ones you want to truly respect, Because she has 3/4 of them,But I'll say this,I'm a tree climber by trade,Assist in demolition of buildings as a hobby,I've actually for some ungodly known reason, held several widow spiders,&the brown recluse,Never have I gotten a bite,a threat pose,or a sign of anything other than slight curiosity,or they just want to run and get away from me
I now have 10 jumpers thanks to you lol. No one in my life gets it, but they're the cutest!!! Forest, Bramble, Briar, Wren, Finn, Sage, Thyme, Clover, Cricket, & Basil ❤️
wow!!! I never knew a giganteus species of jumping spiders even existed. that is so cool. thanks for showing us the babes. I feel like the one hiding in the moss has seen some things. 🤣 it's probably still trying to hide from its cannibal family.
I knew that first baby was getting ready to take a leap. They are so dang adorable, I had to get a regal. Many of my friensd are slowly getting over their fear through my little Spinderella.
Cool video! Thanks for the update on these. They’re adorable! Also, thanks for being one of the pioneers for these spiders. It’s not easy and rarely rewarded, but it’s cool to see your passion species take off in the hobby after all the work 😊
The Kat Pack is back in stock! I just bought them and I'm sooooooo excited! It will be my first real enclosure. No more jars but real actual enclosures. Yay!! I can't wait!!!
I began my own jumper collection because of your videos, and your advice has made this so much simpler than I ever thought it would be. Dont let the haters make you feel like you dont know your stuff, because you absolutely RULE
Lol jumping spiders are so fun, and slings are always so chaotic 😂 In my experience the Putnami species are quite crazy, always running and jumping sporadically haha. Happy for you for a successful breeding. Btw, what is the name of the little blue hide that the eggs were in? That looks great
i currently have a female regal shes about 1 years old and still going strong! she doesnt like being handled so much though but before her i have always had the hyllus species (never had a female only males) love this species so much though they are beautiful i've never seen one as a baby like this before so this video was great for me to see their cuteness!!
I just purchased my first jumping spider from them! I’m so excited for this new journey. Thank you for your videos, I’ve been preparing and they’re so informative on the spooders. Definitely helped me get over my fear of spiders and soon imma be taking care of one lol! 🖤🖤🖤
Mine regal laid her first sac in the same thing. I was happy to see that because I just took it and actually moved it to one of your katpack enclosures until all the babies are out and about. I don't believe they can escape that enclosure.
I have two baby opisthoncus which are about 4i but still tiny (2mm) and because they are still somewhat transparent are often almost impossible to see. Even in a tiny container with a little bit of wood wool it takes ages to find them (before I open the lid to feed) and they move fast so I now use a tray and have a brush close by to avoid spending ages scanning the bench at eye level with a torch searching for a minute crumb or spec of dust that is moving.
Just wanted to say my family and I have been following your channel and the more we watch the more inspired we become (except my husband. He is terrified but he will get over it with their cuteness im sure) 😂 we don't have our first jumping spider yet, but we sent Tom an email. Thank you so much for that , otherwise we would not have had it. Take care❤ ❤❤❤
Enjoying your videos. Just became interested in the spiders when a Dave's Little Beasties. He is in the UK and is a long time breeder of Ts. I watched you past videos. I want to say how much I enjoyed the colab you made on Avic avics. Your rehousing the "little kids" went well. Wonders of paint brushes and gentleness.
I just found a 2nd(?) instar jumper in my house, winter is about to hit in Minnesota so rather than release, I'm trying to raise him up. I'm not too hopeful, Bagels has yet to eat anything (to the best of my knowledge) after almost a week in my care
Hyllus are hard to keep and breed. They need a specific heat and light set up. Bioactive enclosures etc. Even if you do things perfectly they still lay small clutches and sometimes they don't develop or thrive. There is also a huge issue with inbreeding them in captivity. Which makes them also more fragile. I would talk to Melissa from spooderhood spiders. She and her partners are the most successful hyllus breeders in the US. Maybe even everywhere. Her adoption guidelines for them are strict for good reason.
Try using a ultra fine mister for your babies. For sub adults and adults the spray bottle youre using is ok but those droplets on the side of the enclosure could easily drown a babies book lungs. they look healthy tho.
when i caught my first jumper my wife said fine but only1, not i have 3 t-cribs enclosures and have caught a bunch in the last few years as they pass or mature males i release into my yard my wife still not a fan but shes gettin better
I am just finding your page, across my search for some answers on my ailing mind. Do you lose a lot of slings or jumper babies often? I have a Phidippus cardinalis who just lost her third sling, after all the little babies died inside her nest! I never caught her eating them, they just seem to die before they ever have a chance to leave! I kept her well-fed when she would take food, sprayed the enclosure with very fine mist to keep humidity up (my office always has consistent temperature and humidity anyway because of my many houseplants) and give her drinks from a q-tip so that there was no risk of water getting in to drown the little ones. She always seemed like a diligent mother too, it made me sad to see her get just as disappointed as I was when something went wrong. I'm not sure she'll have another sling before she's too worn-out, but if she surprised me again, is there any advice you could offer?
Could you please tell me when the next animal con going to be. I remember seeing it on your video but can't remember which one. I think it was November 12 in your state . I would love to come if I had some information about it.
With wolf spiders how long until the egg sac hatches and how to tell if its a fertile sac my son found a wolf spider and like a month ago she made a egg sac and jas been carrying it around but it hasn't hatched yet
Indeed, once you dial in their enclosures. They are simple. Giganteus are Indeed tricky out of the 3 hyllus that I have bred. I would suggest keeping them together and well fed. I understand this video is older. Good job on babies. I can't say that I know many others who have gotten giganteus babies in the USA

Hi! I REALLY need some advice about my jumping spider that i believe (fingers crossed) is gravid but im not positive. I caught her in my house in early November and she was already mature and is VERY plump. Im just hoping to maybe confim my suspicions that she is gravid or maybe shes just "big boned", also her behavior is weird compared to my other jumpers ive had but she has decided since yesterday to build not one but TWO hammocks, she also did not put them at the top of her enclosure she put them at the bottom under some leaves of a fake succently that i put in there as decor. She also chose to put both of the hammocks right next to each other? Any idea why she mightve built 2? So far no eggs in either and she is still coming out to socialize and eat
while i understand why people would be scared of spiders, i have no idea why people kill them, the same goes for scorpions. i was actually stung by a scorpion when i was six, it was hiding in my shoe and it stung me as i put it on. i still would never kill one. it was not trying to hurt me, it was trying to protect itself, how can i blame it for that? i am thankful that i had someone to show me that spiders are not something to fear, my 1st grade teachers would bring in tarantulas that he caught in to school. after all these years i am still thankful.
