    Make an alternative arrow completele from Hardened steel and try it again.

    • @caveymoley
      @caveymoley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    • @ytxstream
      @ytxstream 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      The problem is that the arrow collapsing in on itself dissipates energy that would otherwise be transferred into the plate. Completely hardened is not the way to go but a one piece arrow made from steel with a hardened tip or made from tungsten would be the way to go.

    • @ZEPR0FESS0RR
      @ZEPR0FESS0RR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rigel hardened steel would shatter like a frag grenade
      I agree with Ytxstream He would need to make it out of a solid one piece. Maybe out of titanium or aluminum with a FULL titanium jacket or maybe tungsten jacket but that might be too heavy..
      Also the hollow shaft needs to end several inches before the tip of the arrow

    If the tip was only loosely fitted inside the shaft, wpuld the pressure on impact be able to ignite diesel? I know you dont do explosive projectiles because of laws but I'm wondering if it would be feasible to weld a blockade inside the shaft and have the tip be pushed in on inpact so that it ignites a charge (diesel goes off by pressure) that then propels the tip forwards.

    I've seen plenty of bullets hitting AR500 steel, both in real life and on TH-cam. That did a lot more damage than I was expecting! My prediction was a small ding in the plate, with chipping of the hardened point of the arrow. Wow!

    • @maxmustermann1455
      @maxmustermann1455 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'd still need the permit first. Not that easy to get, you'd need a reason.
      Nothing qualifies. Self defence (extremely hard to argue that anyway, but in this case impossible), sports (I doubt there is a club which has a .50cal category), collecting (too recent, also you aren't allowed to shoot them anyway and are only permitted to own 1 bullet in most cases).
      So yeah, in theory you could buy one. In practice, no so much.

    • @radiofreedom7840
      @radiofreedom7840 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "Bund Deutscher Sportschützen" has a discipline which can be shot with .50cal. It is possible, but it's an expensive hobby.

    • @maxmustermann1455
      @maxmustermann1455 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      RadioFreedom
      You'd still need to find a local club which offers the discipline. IIRC you have to actually shoot semi-regularly to maintain your license.
      If it's a official discipline I guess some ranges must offer it, otherwise it would be pointless. But the expenses aren't your only problem.
      So unless you want to travel across half the country every other week just to shoot your gun, you'd mainly have to be lucky to live near such a place.

    Just a tip for using AR500... hang it when u shoot it. It is designed to hang and deflect bullets downward by swinging backward upon impact. Therefore it will not ricochet back towards the shooter. Here in the states, shooting steal plates is quite normal practice. All close range plates are only shot at if hanging or on stands that allow the plate to fall. Shooting at firmly mounted plates IS dangerous at close range and should only be shot at when shooting at 100 meters or more.

    • @powerplay074
      @powerplay074 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Im sure he know this.. The point here is to cause as much penetration and damage to the plate as possible. If it swings freely then the energy goes to move the plate instead of penetration. Well i think you just made a general tip anyway but everyone shooting hard target should know this anyway. I remember when i was kid i shot an empty sealed cokebottle with cheap air rifle and 4.5mm led ammo the projectile just bounced back and almoust hit my head. I had like 30m distance but the bottle were firmy against our wall so the bottle absorded the impact and returned to me instead of knocking the bottle down.

      actually on the fence on this one. Tungsten is heavier. I forgot how it's called, but heavier things are less willing to chance direction. (Masseträgheit in german) So a heavier head could very well prefer to go forward instead of bouncing back. Maybe it would even go through and just strip off the shaft against the plate in that process.

    If this is a "toy" in Germany I can only imagine what the movie toy story would be like if it was made by Germans.

    • @maxmustermann1455
      @maxmustermann1455 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the same, but shittier. Because german TV/Movie productions suck ass.
      To say it's a toy isn't entirely true anyway. Because of german gun law, it's not a gun. Also, it's obviously not a (cross-)bow.
      You can classify it as a toy, because it doesn't fit any other categories. But it's not a toy gun really, because it's not a toy.
      For that, there is another law, limiting the amount of force to something ridiculously small like .5 joule. But that's out of the question anyway, bacause the projectile goes over the barrell, not through...
      The most accurate thing to call it, would be an "unregulated contraption inhabiting a legal grey area".
      But of course, calling it a toy is much funnier.

      @@MeepChangeling One can buy tungsten carbide rounds in the machine tooling market. Ot go and talk to a commercial machine shop and offer to purchase their broken endmill cutters.
      These can be silver soldered into a steel adapter with a shoulder, to fit into the pointy end of the arrow.
      The shoulder of the adapter would prevent telescoping of the adapter into the arrow tube, provided the tube's wall thickness is sufficient to absorbe the stresses.

    To anyone about to complain that "but they mean AR500 BODY ARMOR plates!" the AR500 company uses the same steel in their gongs as in their standard bulletproof vests. The only difference between this and an AR500 Level III plate is the lack of anti-spalling coating. The coating does nothing to stop a bullet, nor break it up. It only helps catch led fragments (spalling) so you don't get your face shredded by shrapnel from the bullet hitting the hard steel.

    The deformation of the arrow not only absorbed a lot of the energy but also changed the shape pf the arrow so that it's no longer able to keep digging deeper. If the entire arrow was solid steel instead of a tip inserted into a tube, it probably would've gone through a lot deeper.
    Do you hink you could make such an arrow, Jorge?

The file is downloadable, the spike diameter is 20mm, proportions and radii may be scaled ±50% without loss of performance. Cheers!

      dawkinsfan41 well, the original designers of this spike for artillery piercing part of the shell started prototyping with medieval mizericordia but with increased speed and problems with tip stability evolved to this design very soon. It works in hand and at cosmic speeds alike.

  • @vukpsodorov5446
    @vukpsodorov5446 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    wow, that thing punched a small hole even though the plate was angled, i mean that's a seriously powerful "toy".
    in case anyone needs this explained, armor works better when it's angled because the object (arrow in this case) trying to penetrate it has to go through more material (steel in this case) before going through, and in some cases some of the force is directed away from the armor and doesn't help the penetration.
    so, if Joerg shot straight at the plate with no angle, the arrow would've punched a larger hole. but, of course, safety first. he's standing close enough to the plate that the arrow can bounce right back and seriously injure (or maybe even kill) him.
