- A so-so painting in Procreate, which despite not being super successful, taught me a great deal :D

Never comment on vids but, just now i watched one of your old videos and you said about just enjoying the process of creating art for yourself, really allowed to bring me out of a dump I was in. I recently drew something i really liked and forgot to enjoy drawing as I tried to draw up to that standard again. Your video really just brought me back thinking why should I care about that, just enjoy the process and I really appreciate it. Your commentaries on these are amazing than you.

As someone from Scotland, its really pleasing to see how much our landscapes have inspired your work. Also, if this is a so-so painting...i cant wait to see what you produce in Procreate when you feel more comfortable with it!

I kept expecting you to say "the standing stones I saw in Skyrim" then realized they do exist IRL :D Really enjoyed this video, so much depth and perspective in this piece, very helpful to see it done step by step.
I also really like the realistic look. You don't always need crazy fantasy elements to create a great mood. This is a prime example.
I agree with you! Sometimes it can feel restful to paint something much more grounded and simple :)

You are spot on about Procreate brushes. Some are not stable or consistent. I thought the pencils or settings till i saw your vid. Thank you. You work is inspiring.

Sometimes toning fantasy elements back can lead to a stronger work - for example, if every instance in LOTR were incredibly fantastical, it wouldn't feel so gritty and tangible. I think you're being too hard on yourself, the artwork is dope :) Looking forward to the next one.

You mentioned this was done over the course of several sessions - about how many, over how many days? And are you working on other stuff and fitting sessions of this in between? My noggin is bursting at the seams with ideas, but I know myself well enough that I'm not at the point of effectively managing multiple pieces at once, but wonder if I should start training myself to do so. I'm not a "professional" artist in that it's not my day job, but I've found more commissions landing in my inbox, and I'm starting to get a little stressed about not being able to juggle them all (or even more than one at a time, if I'm being perfectly honest) in a timely fashion.
Stunning work, imo. I am not comfortable with this type of work flow, but I'm always fascinated by artists who work this way (very Marco Bucci-esque). Love your insight - you always have the right thing to say in your latest video when I feel I've hit a stumbling point in whatever project I'm currently working on. Thank you for putting work into your channel - I go through so many videos from so many of my "role model" artists, but I neglect to leave meaningful feedback. I did some serious self-reflection recently, and discovered that I really need meaningful feedback of my own. If I make an honest effort to provide, perhaps I will soon start receiving. Rock on, brother!
One more bit before I cut this diatribe off - you're so right about not needing fancy brushes. I fell victim to feeling like I needed special brushes to make something pretty (absurd, given my traditional painting roots - the best work I ever did on canvas took no more than 4 or 5 run of the mill cheap brushes). I've come full circle in my digital discipline - I'm using a very slightly textured round brush for nearly everything now. It's a wonderful feeling, really - dispensing with the unnecessary.
Thanks so much for this! I do typically have a few things going at a time, not to mention my job which has me working on about a dozen different things every week haha. This artwork was done over the course of a week I believe, in between work and other studies. Having a coffee on the couch in the morning before work, lunch break, sitting in bed watching tv before going to sleep; this made up probably 95% of this painting :D I understand the feeling/struggle of trying to meaningfully work on several pieces at once and my advice would be just to do what feels comfortable. If you find you aren't progressing on your work when managing 2 or 3 pieces, just put all your efforts into one until it is done. Knowing it is "done" is another skill on it's own which comes with experience, but that's a whole other discussion 😂 Just remember to seek out ways to make the process suit your wants because it's really all about enjoying the process. Even if that means taking a bit longer and just focusing on one thing at a time :) Hope this helps.

I'm just starting landscapes. Struggling a lot with how to simplify complex masses of objects and textures. It's really helpful watching your timelapse vids as ultimately you have a style I would I like to land somewhere close to - a loose realistic style. It's kind of funny to hear you're unhappy with your work then. I would be so stoked if I made something like in your vid.
Thanks so much! It's funny how we all lose some objectivity when looking at our own work. It helps to let others see the positive aspects in work that you feel isn't that good :) Keep going! I started as a character guy and only started environments to round out my skill set. I ended up loving it and finding my real strength :D

Wow! What filter did you use to go from grey scale to color initially?
Loved the vid Grady! So you're saying in the video that you're not very used to the blender tools yet in Procreate (or brushes I suppose). Would you say this piece is created more through the build-up of various brushes and colors then? Like a traditional oil painting? I'm struggling with blending still in digital form and was thinking maybe it's still possible to have the build-up of colors and brushes approach for a digital piece..
Yes exactly, this was created with a very traditional approach like oil painting. There was quite a bit of experimentation, and re-doing things that didn't work. When working digitally, I think if you are struggling your best bet would be to keep things simple. Approach your colors by painting "daubs" and don't worry so much about blending. Blending too much without a strong foundation in digital work can cause some unappealing blurry/muddiness. I wish you the best and thanks for your kind words :)
your drawing reminds me of a place i visited in Scotland, Dunvegan called The Duirnish Stone. is that your reference? great videos love hearing the scotland references
I was in Dunvegan but sadly didn't see this stone. This painting is inspired by the standing stones at the Clava Cairns in Inverness.

Thanks for saying that :) I just felt it was missing something in the end, and the process felt a little sloppy. Still trying to get used to the tool so the result after 5-6 hours didn't end up where I'd hoped. It can happen that way alot when you go into something without a very specific result in mind(at least for me anyway)
@@gradyfrederickart Ah ok, thanks for the explanation. btw I think Procreate is awesome but I've have never been able to gel with it.. I really ought to get over that hump!
