- Hi Campers,
This week I go into central Nevada into a vast BLM landscape and solo backpack into a very remote desert area. I explore the desert landscape and make a camp among a rock and boulder field with mini canyons! I also cook a delicious Pasta and Pork dinner. I have a few trail tips that could be helpful and I check out the strange central Nevada tourist stop called the Shoe Tree!

Middlegate Station has the BEST bacon cheeseburgers!!! That's well worth the drive alone! I love that part of Nevada!

This is one of my favorite videos! Chris I have been a subscriber for at least 6 months now . I like your hike and mental outlook on what you are going through. I am not a overnight guy. I trail run 15 to 20 miles. I’m thinking of slowing down and enjoy the views. Also I watch Dave Paulinas Missing 411 now that gives me 2nd and 3rd thoughts! Seriously!

Nevada Desert out by Great Basin is INCREDIBLE to backpack in! Lots of oasis’s and of course plenty of views!
Wide open as a frontier! Need to find some hot springs and an Oasis of water!
One late summer when I was in my 30's my two young sons and myself were invited to a Church outing to camp and spend the night. At the last minute we borrowed a circus tent ( a very big tent) and 3 sleeping bags for the night adventure. I had very limited experience with tents. Didn't have a ground cloth and sleeping pads for the sleeping bags., slept miserable throughout the night . After that night I don't think we went back to that church group. We later found another church group that supported members of the Boy Scouts for monthly meetings for organizing hikes and overnight camping. We had a lot of fun camping with some knowledgeable adult scout leaders.. The best night sleep I had was when I finally bought a flannel liner for my sleeping bag. Enjoyed your great video trek to the Middle of No-Where. Definitely an interesting feature you found with the small canyon passageways and the Giant Shoe Tree. Another note: I am confused, where is you can of beer that you normally partake in? I look forward to the many varieties of beer that you chose for your hikes... Dos Equis - Stay Thirsty My Friends

It’s so nice to see all my old familiar areas. My husband was a Jeep guy and we used to take off to the eastern sierras and Carson City areas when ever we could. :)

Nice video, great country and makes me miss Nevada. Used to live in West Central Nevada and could back pack far days on end and never see a single person. Now we live in Washington and run into people every time we go back packing except for the middle of winter. You should consider a quilt. I broke down and got a 20 degree quilt with overstuff for $300, it weighs under two pounds and packs down super small. Thanks for the video!
West Central is wide open country. Washington has many good places but yes more people. people talking about quilts...worth a look! Thanks.

Those are definitely big "dogies", Chris...lol. And those jets or planes are almost always up above me whenever i'm camping or exploring in the Nevada desert that, it seems they're there to spy on me...lol. Who knows, right?

24:02 maybe the first howl was him saying "Nice try FAKE human!" lol. Oh yes the Shoe Tree - I have seen this before. It's harder to get them in there than it looks isn't it? BTW Merrell boots - the absolute BEST as far as I'm concerned. I know the "serious" hiking world can snub them but I've come back from hikes where everything hurts except my feet. Great choice.
Cool video and great story. In 2021 just before Halloween I did some dispersed camping off hwy 95 just south of Fallon NV. That was great as well. Nothing out there really but at night the military was definitely doing some night maneuvers. Doesn’t seem like anything really lives out there. I didn’t see any tracks of any kind.

I bought a gas transfer device. I am hoping it transfers all or almost all the gas but I would guess I may still need one of those punches.

I love this kind of terrain. I camp out there quite a bit it’s my favorite place to go trekking. I usually go to the CA side of the basin further north than where you are in this video and I’ve checked out the Washoe county side too there are trails that run between CA and NV. The best thing about this region is the abundance of spring water sources.

Chris, you are always such a happy breath of fresh air. Thank you for being you. I was thinking, aren't we always somewhere, anywhere and everywhere we go, even if we are in the middle of no where? Anyhow, I just wanted to say thank you for your upbeat mentality and happy-go-lucky personality. I believe there is good or positive stuff where ever I go, it sometimes takes a bit of extra effort to find it, but it's always there, as long as I keep looking, I have always been able to find it. BTW, I just love the sunset, with you striking a pose in the middle of it. That made for a really nice photo, "good enough for a jigsaw puzzle", my mother used to say. If you do not have a personal locator beacon it sure would be a good idea to get one! They are getting reasonable priced at just over $200 without having a subscription. There has been a few missing in Nevada with a couple in the Arc Dome Wilderness. I’ve been traveling alone in Nevada many times in the years past. Downtown Berlin would be to the south of Middlegate and it’s another great place in the middle of nowhere.
I have a Spot x that eorks well for communication with my girlfoens / SOS as well as a daily tracker. But thank you... middle of nowhere needs to be taken seriously.
@@basecampchris I bought the SPOT 3 a few years ago. The newest model are better but I will hold off for awhile before getting one. My phone is getting pretty old too. I need to win the Lottery. :-)

Chris....have you ever had the pleasure of meeting Ms. WONDER HUSSEY out in the middle of nowhere....shes a peach and loves to explore out in the desert in much the same way you do....!!!
Don't forget, the temperature outside will be about 10 degrees lower than inside the tent.
The tent does make a difference....the sleeping bag liner added some toasty heat!

I was wondering since you look into strange stories that are haunting and mysterious... Can you please tell us viewers if the mysterious strange disappearance of Gary Hinge whom was hiking deep up in the Nevada High desert while on an expedition is true? And if so, what exactly happened to him. Has there been any updates on his case/ disappearance? It's really a strange story that's quite unsettling! 😩
I don't really think the story true... Perhaps it is just for entertainment. And if so, then does the Gary story/ movie mirror the strange mysterious disappearance of Kenny Veach whom went missing while hiking??
Anyhow, I just thought I'd suggest this weird disappearance story to you.

I love these sorts of trips from you, I really want to go on one like this, but I'm not sure how to plan something like this, when there's no known water sources or anything, do you just bring enough water for the whole trip with you?
Yes, bring enough water for the night and for 2 meals ( 2- 32 oz bottles ) . Usually bring the 2.5 liter Osprey hydration res if I'm out longer. Always have water waiting for me at the car too.
