In my experience with this plugin it has two modes, first one is when you set the settings as you did in the video but you must not check the make layer checkbox and it will apply the photo as you see it in the preview. The second mode is when you check the Make layer checkbox and it will Ignore the settings and make the layers to do your edit manually.

Great abservation. I think they did that for flexibility. Actually on some pictures i don't check the make layer box if the edit is not meant to be "too high end"
