    Thank You for this video. Regardless of other's opinions,,I am grateful for a video full of so much useful information. After watching so many clowns run their sucks just to here them run,, and yet teach nothing useful. As a ''first timer'' in stitching,, showing what NOT to do is even more important than what TO do. It eliminates all those cherry mistakes in trying something rather complex for the first time. I look forward to many more video's from you, as well as dropping by your site for some tools. Thanks again.

    Rusty is using a sewing awl. Osborne has one that we sell, it only comes in one size. As for the needle size, we typically recommend the harness needle, which comes in three sizes. The size you use is largely preference but the size thread you're using will dictate it a little. The '00' (medium) is a common choice.

    There's a lot of sense in your video and you have a great way of expressing it. Many thanks.

    I liked the description of the fibers in veg vs chrome tanned leather. I didn't know. Thanks.

    As someone new to hand-stitching (especially without a stitching pony) , I appreciate the information presented in this video...Thank You!!!

    Proof that there's a lot of ways to achieve the same result. I don't think there is one thing that he does that I do. He's not wrong, just different. Like most leatherwork techniques, you end up settling in on what works for you.

    No mention of stitching chisels? I discovered stitching chisels and haven't gone back to the drill. I like Ritza Tiger thread too, its hollow braid prevents tangles more than anything I've tried. With the precision of stitching chisels I can mark three layers of leather separately and they all match up when sewing.

    Great tutorial, I got a lot of good tips from you. Didn't quite make out on the style and size of the needle for the saddle stitching part? Thanks!

    Thank you Rusty. I have had the awl for a few years just because my father used it. I didn't know how to use it properly. What kind of needles are used in the awl?

    What type of leather is that?
    I've got some vegetable tan, but it's pinkish and really solid. The leather in this video looks more yellow (which I like) and appears to have a softer hand than mine.
    The brand and type etc. would be appreciated!

    I have an old rawhide decorative item, that has started to "weep" something. It appears to be some sort of oil. Is there any way to stabilize it? Please help if possible. Thanks a million!

      I suggest making sure it's really dry. Rawhide isn't tanned, so it will rot if it gets wet

    My Grandpa used a Soldering Iron that had a blade shaped like a Butterfly Fly Wing with a smooth radius to make the groove.

    What if you make jewelry and you don't want to sew stitching into it but you want to add leather onto leather and it has to stay with no stitching what is the best glue to use for it to stay?

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Lora! If you're wanting the jewelry to retain some sort of flexibility, then you can try light coats of contact cement. If you're wanting the pieces to harden/stiffen a bit after drying, then I would consider using an epoxy, like E6000. We like to do sample swatches before we make anything big! Hope this helps, and thanks for your question. Let us know if we can be any more assistance. :)

    Thank You for the video can you tell me is the diamond hole chisel as good as an awl Thank You also known as a pricking chisel

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas!
      A pricking chisel really is only for lacing or buck-stitching. The stitching awl from Osborne is going to be the best tool for the job.

      Thomas Wilson there are stitching chisel for sewing AND lacing. they are different but yes they work very well for stitching.

    • @seriouskaraoke879
      @seriouskaraoke879 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Thomas Wilson -- Times have changed. The easier approach by far is to use stitching chisels. SLC carries them but you can buy them for dirt cheap on ebay. I honestly don't know why you would use anything else. One whack and you have up to six perfect slanted, evenly spaced stitching holes every time. So much easier than an awl.
      I think what you were referring to is the ridiculously priced French pricking chisel made by Vergez Blanchard. Those are made to be used much like an overstitch wheel in that their function is to mark where the holes are to be punched, but not to punch the hole for you. You'll notice that the tines are not a consistent width as you move up the tine. They get thicker in fact and you would end up with a hole too fat on top and too small on the bottom of the leather. They're pretty, but useless in comparison to stitching chisels.
      After four years, you have undoubtedly figured this out. But for those of you just starting out, you're welcome.
