I always hum this tune when I'm in Liverpool, my husbands ships were berthed in Liverpool more than anywhere else in the UK so I was often down there, I live in Perthshire, I've always loved Liverpool and the Scouses, my son now lives in Liverpool,a good excuse to still visit. X
Love this old song, I lived and sailed out of Liverpool in the 1970s. Brings back memories of the docks, pubs and Liverpool judies. A great old sea town!
Ah pure brilliance as this, needs few words..to my mind the most beautyful rendition of the great spirit & anthem of Liverpool & it's wonderful homely,no nonsense people who have historicaly worked so very hard if not broken their backs ,.. their spirit is beyound question & their contribution to Britain ..amazing! With deep respect.John Co.Tipperary Ireland.
My favorite song by my favorite group. I miss hearing new music from them. I have all the CDs, some LPs, I even have Ronnie's solo work. Oh, i grew up in Virginia and live in South Carolina.
Hi Zoe. I'm guessing that it might be at ROnnie Browne's home in the borders. I read somewhere that he bought a house in the borders and wrote the song 'Where Two Hawks fly' about it! Yes, a nice setting and a nice song. Glad you liked it.
These two cannot be replaced but.. the BBC actually still transmits great stuff frae Scotland like this streaming .. BBC Sounds - Radio nan Gaidheal - The program is Caithream Ciuil.. weekdays at 14:00 GMT (uk)
On that note, have you heard Roy Williamson sing the lovely "Peggy Gordon " ? It's on TH-cam, with various photographs of him to accompany the recording.
I keep seeing all these videos from this beautiful concert. Where can I find a recording of the whole show? I will buy a DVD if I have to. It's such beautiful music in such a beautiful setting.
Can't work out how to create a video response if I didn't upload the video myself, and youtube won't let me post the link, either. If you like this, check out Corrie Folk Trio version. I like it even better. It's Roy on verses 1 and 3, Bill Smith on 2 and 4. The video should show up right next to this.
Anything by the Corries is good but this one is not nearly as forceful as the Corrie Folk Trio version that they both sang in. That's one of the best, if not THE best I've ever heard.
The Leaving Of Liverpool lyrics by The High Kings Fare thee well to Prince's Landing Stage River Mersey, fare thee well I am bound for California It's a place that I know right well So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee I have signed on a Yankee clipper ship Davy Crockett is her name And Burgess is the captain of her And they say that she's a floating shame So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee I have sailed with Burgess once before He's a man that I know right well If a man is a sailor, he can get along And if not, then he is sure in Hell So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee Oh the sun is on the harbour, love And I wish I could remain For I know it will be a long, long time Before I see you again So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee [from: www.bellsirishlyrics.com/leaving-of-liverpool.html]
this video ripped out , threw them on the floor and stepped on them , then shoved them back in my head. I still can hardly digest what I just saw and heared. it was like stepping in to a time machine. now I think I finaly understand the beatles progression formulas. these corries sure know how to lay it on thick like a speed run of zelda oot in slow motion. I underestimated the value of older music that time doesn't supprise me I can't play eruption backwards.

all ships are referred to as "her" or "she" its traditional as its largely believed they were protections from the treachery and danger of the sea...like your mother might do when you were an infant! hence SS Davey Crockett is a her/she ... :)
Hi Jonny; do not know the story but can tell you its not a sea shanty . Sea shanty's are work type songs ; This is whats known as a Forbitter. A Forbitter IS an off duty song sung by the sailors usually off watch at night ; on deck singing to the moon and stars and reminiceing with a tott of rum.
The song most probably refers to the 1812 war Britain vs USA. It is not to be assumed the "leavers" here were Scousers themselves, but the Liverpool harbour was the most important one to ship British troops westwards ove the briny.
Liverpool in that 1812 era was an important sea port and was used by merchant ships and whaling ships as well as Naval / troop ships. The song itself does not have a "military flavour" and I just wonder about that.? As I intimated before; its an off duty relaxation song sung by the sailors when off watch.
@@mannthemann6118 It has nothing to do with the war of 1812, it's got nothing to do with soldiers embarking either. It's a song about a merchant sailor working out of Liverpool and looking forward to coming back home there. It's also a song that is from later in the 19th century anyway.
It was 'collected' from a sea-captain in New York City, IIRC. Clancys could have been the first to record it, but it could well have been recorded by someone lesser-known earlier ......
not like Luke Kelly , but just different, I can't say it is better or worse, but it IS The Corries, which to me is PURE SCOTTISH MAGIC every time I hear them, no matter what song they choose to pull out of their magic hat..........
Wonderful song by wonderful songsters. We left the Mersey on a boat for Canada in 1966.
In a new era where substance and meaning matters little, this production is as AUTHENTIC and meaningful as you will get.
You said it!
I was brought up listening to the Corries both live and recorded. There'll never be another folk band like them.
Agree
Regards from Frankfurt

Love this old song, I lived and sailed out of Liverpool in the 1970s. Brings back memories of the docks, pubs and Liverpool judies. A great old sea town!
Does this kind of haunting entertainment still exist? I remember it well and loved it..
Try Gnoss. They are a more modern version of the Corries.
I don’t know, but my Dad played me the Corries as a kid and there’s still no music I love more
i'M 55 , I heard this about 40 odd year ago and still remember it . My dad played all this tunes , good memories
One word... Legends
Remember watching this back in 1987... (aye, last century!) Brilliant rendition by Ron and Ronnie. Many thanks for posting!

Used to go to their concerts - a really great pair

I love the Corries. I did not discover them until after Roy’s death, but I am so thankful FOR You TUBE .
Almost 34 years RIP Roy
Not a scot but loved this pair folk music at its very best will last forever 😅
Beautifully Sung & Played ❤
So easy to sing along to. The Corries are the best - again!!
Notice how they play the audience, the mark of true entertainers.
Another favourite - just love the Corries' music. How is Ronnie these days - hope you are well?
Love the Corries, great Scots band, up the Celts..
Nora, my scouse angel, I think of you everyday. I miss you sorely and wish I could see you one last time.

Sitting in Macrehanish thinking about my dad his fav group feeling emotional
So was I sitting in Machrihanish last week (my Dad)
Eu não tenho palavras para explicar o que sinto por esta música... principalmente com esta dupla, que eu AMO!!
Awesome! Wish I was there :)
my granddad and grandma left Liverpool to come to Canada.. Not the exact same as the narrative of the song, but I can relate.
Verry well done but I like the Clancy brothers version better ,just my opinion
t mcgovern cant beat luke kelly's version
maria farrugia-harrison Check out the Corrie folk trio's recording of it. Interesting. This one is more of as singalong for TV purposes.
These two cannot be replaced but.. the BBC actually still transmits great stuff frae Scotland like this streaming .. BBC Sounds - Radio nan Gaidheal - The program is Caithream Ciuil.. weekdays at 14:00 GMT (uk)
Just wunderful.
It's very nostalgic
it's not the leaving of full screen but the realisation of the death and now retirement. of these geniuses........
Just lovely.
What a gem!
Superb !
Love the Corries man early influence on the band
Omg this is great, as is Like Kellys! Listen to both.
Beautifully plaintive music and words--
On that note, have you heard Roy Williamson sing the lovely "Peggy Gordon " ? It's on TH-cam, with various photographs of him to accompany the recording.
still my favourite
Outstanding !!

My wife and I left the Pierhead in 65 on the Empress of Canada
My grandparents came to Canada

He also does a great version of " When New York Was Irish " , another song about emigration.
Another listen
The Leaving Of Liverpool lyrics
by The High Kings
Fare thee well to Prince's Landing Stage
River Mersey, fare thee well
I am bound for California
It's a place that I know right well
So fare thee well, my own true love
And when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee
I have signed on a Yankee clipper ship
Davy Crockett is her name
And Burgess is the captain of her
And they say that she's a floating shame
So fare thee well, my own true love
And when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee
I have sailed with Burgess once before
He's a man that I know right well
If a man is a sailor, he can get along
And if not, then he is sure in Hell
So fare thee well, my own true love
And when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee
Oh the sun is on the harbour, love
And I wish I could remain
For I know it will be a long, long time
Before I see you again
So fare thee well, my own true love
And when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee
So fare thee well, my own true love
And when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

The high King, with their dreadfully self-promoting title, have nothing on these lads. The hk couldn't spell the word 'authentic'.
Can any one tell us what year was, just love this song and by so many fork singers, our group the Seekers did a nice version of it also
could be 1978-1983, In the 7o' all we got was black music from america
Did Roy also build the English guitar he's playing? I know he created both the Combolins and the 28 string guitar.
Kunte Kinte I don't think so. At least I never read that he did.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
WHERE WAS this shot? Is it a Movie Set. Beautiful setting.
The West end Bar in Port Glasgow. Long demolished. Was a BBC programme

enjoyed this i think you might have made up the lot of a sailor verse
The song is from a sailors prospective.
I saw the Clancy Brothers sing this live. This is good but I do prefer the Clancy version.
Many Scots settled in Liverpool - and helped to make it great.
Farewell to Prince's Landing Stage
River Mersey fare thee well
I know 'twill be some long long time
e'er I see you again
So fare thee well my own true love
when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
but my darling when I think on thee
Well I've shipped onboard of a Yankee ship
Davy Crockett is her name
and Burgess is the captain o' her
and I hear she's a floating hell
So fare thee well my own true love
when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
but my darling when I think on thee
Well the lot of a sailor is hard my love
of comfort there is none
So I will return to you my love
when my seafaring days are done
So fare thee well my own true love
when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
but my darling when I think on thee
Well the ship is in the rocks my love
her anchor is away
and it's time for me to leave my love
but I will be back someday
So fare thee well my own true love
when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
but my darling when I think on thee
So fare thee well my own true love
when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
but my darling when I think on thee
just one problem , how can a ship named davey crocket be a her ?
all ships are referred to as "her" or "she" its traditional as its largely believed they were protections from the treachery and danger of the sea...like your mother might do when you were an infant! hence SS Davey Crockett is a her/she ... :)
Best version ever by a mile was the Fureys in 1971....
Hey guys I’m a scouser from the heart of Liverpool can anyone tell me the story behind this time

From Liverpool yes I agree
The Corrie Folk Trio performs this song better than The Corries do.
not bad but not as good as luke kelly
nothing ever will be again

WHERE WAS this shot? Is it a Movie Set. Beautiful setting.
It was shot, according to Arkybark, in a television studio made to look like a room, with a pre-selected audience,
