  • The breaker on this York packaged RTU had tripped intermittently over the past year. I pulled out my megohmmeter to troubleshoot the issue and found some faulty crankcase heaters.%

    Always wanted to see some one use a megger. I ran into a troubleshooting call where low voltage resettable fuse was tripped looked everywhere and used meter to find short but couldn’t pinpoint it. Finally on my third call back I got lucky and found the problem; it was the condenser temperature sensor shorted to ground. I bet if I had a megger I would of found it the firsts time. Good video!

      Just before using a megger on low voltage components, you don't want any electronics to be hit by the high output voltage of the megger.

    used this method today to locate a rubbed wire causing fuse to blow intermittently.it works.thanks!

    We just set up all our guys with these m500’s for using on PM’s. Great way to explain to the customer the condition of their motors.

      Just be sure they know not to test through any vfds or boards.

    Interesting way of tracking the integrity of the wire or bad connections down to the underperforming components.

    Take your ohm meter out,go across each leg,power off, and measure line to load. You have dirty or bad contacts. Some relays sell rebuild kits as you know. I will trust the ohm reading, before injecting high voltage from megger. Because if its compressor, ohms will tell the tale. But your isolation method us logical. I am licensed electrician,with degree in electronics. 30 years in trades.

      A meter didn't find this problem. Been using my megger successfully for years like this, but thank you for the input

    I really appreciate you sharing knowledge but i also have a feeling you are advertising tools and it comes to that at the end. Do we need that or is it possible checking that issue with different tool? Think that giving examples would benefit us all since im seeing my friends are buying bunch of stuff they see on TH-cam and they dont even need that. Anyway not a hater just my opinion. Cheers

      Thanks for the comment. I make vids with tools and products I have on the truck. The megger in this video has been in my truck for 10+ years. Do people send out review items, yes for sure. Do I experiment with them and show their use, sure do. HVAC Know It All is a digital business with a podcast, website, app, etc. Using sponsorship is also utilized to help with all this in some cases to pay the bills. Cheers!

    Great video! A potential additional use for the mega. Have you ever used a mega on a new crankcase heater to see how it scores? I'll try it next time I change and let you know. Thanks again

    Nice video. How do you check a crankcase heater?

    • @nando5302
      @nando5302 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would visual inspect wiring, check for continuity, check resistance value

    • @HVACKnowItAll
      @HVACKnowItAll  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check resistance across and then to ground with a meter. But in this case, I'm basically checking the heaters with my megger.

    Add a fuse block for crankcase heaters?

    • @HVACKnowItAll

      I could yes, but I think they may not be replaced at this point. But that is a great idea for other applications
