One of the best human beings all round. Funny, humble, morally sound, and what a musician. Of all the people I wish I could have met, he's among the highest on my list.
Louis Armstrong easily has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in the world and it would be difficult to disguise. He should have just nodded and let John Daly do the verbal response to make this set more challenging. Bennet Cerf is too sharp to miss the identity of the person making those grunts.
At least from what I know, his voice got like that because of several strenuous, frigid seasons of playing on ferry boats and the like. After that, he’d gotten several surgeries to repair his damaged vocal chords, which did all but help. This gave Armstrong the rasp we know him for today
If so, it was from before his first vocal sessions at age 26, when the rasp was fully formed. New Orleans musicians used to walk all night in the rain to sound like him.
i actually clapped!!! ive been on here watching i think every episode...times lk these im really thankful for youtube and the ppl that take the time to put these classics up...i would of never seen it otherwise! Thanks! x
Estoy plenamente de acuerdo, y no soy americano ni he vivido esa época. Tanto el presentador como los panelistas son un ejemplo de profesionalidad, elegancia y simpatía. Disfruto cuando veo estos programas, que he descubierto hace poco.
Greatest musician of the twentieth century. I think that if his ghost could appear, he would still top the charts and all the groups would carefully listen to discover even more technique, just as they did seventy years ago. No Louis - no Sinatra, Bennett, Clooney, Willie Nelson, and on and on..
they got him at 2:35, and to be honest, i'm surprised louis even lasted that long. even at the mumbling i probably would have guessed him instantly. can't hide something so one-of-a-kind like that voice.
What stupid posts I'm reading here, trying to make something out of nothing - there's no contempt in the audience, no disrespect, it's not a smattering of weak applause - take it for what it is - early television... people didn't go crazy back then like they're on the Arsenio Hall Show going "whoop whoop whoop" - - they applauded politely!! But putting all that aside - aside from being an amazing talent, I have to say what a SWEET MAN Satchmo was!! So genuine!! He is sorely missed!!
..."Satchmo" would find it very difficult to disguise that voice in any way...panel was on to it pretty smartly!! Would this show have been aired about mid 50's, I'm pickin' ??
This can be anywhere between 1952 and 1954, because Steve Allen was a regular panelist before he left to become the original host of "The Tonight Show."
His WML? appearance in 1964 was indeed heralded by a thunderous ovation from the audience. A fitting tribute to give to a man who freely and unstintingly gave of himself through his music...
It's really hard for him to disguise his voice! He has a voice everyone knows right away, as did Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, who was also a mystery guest.
Well as Satchmo himself sung in the Fats Waller song "Black and Blue": I'm white inside But that don't help my case 'Cause I can't hide What is in my face". So in a twisted sort of way you ARE right!
One minute I’m laughing at Lucy and the next I am watching 50’s vintage game shows they had some interesting people on here I would of played this game. 😂
Ikr??? My daughter and I watch these quite often and when the mystery guest comes on we close or cover our eyes and geez I knew it was him from the 1st mmmm
Louis Armstrong made a second appearance on "What's My Line?" as a Mystery Guest in 1964, when he was promoting his appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" where he was debuting his latest single from the title track from the Broadway musical, "Hello, Dolly!". That song became Louis Armstrong's only record to reach Number 1 on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart.
Daly's comments at 3:33 are funny "I wish you could have got higher" followed by Satchmo's comments since he probably is a bit high! Audience didn't get it but I'm surprised the few of them laughed; a bit racy for the 50s.
I thought he meant higher on the show but can also see the other reference. Tbh a lot of them may have caught it. Prohibition was relatively recent and the smear campaigns hadn't had half a century to set in.
Interesting that in Louis Armstrong's first appearance on "What's My Line?", Arlene Francis was sitting in what later became Dorothy Kilgallen's regular seat next to Bennett Cerf and Dorothy was sitting it what would become Arlene's normal seat at the far left of the panelists' table!
I remember a song from a commercial that he did. "I went down to St. Jame's infirmary. Saw my baby there. She was stretched out on a long white table..." I always wanted to hear the rest of the song.
Even his "hmmm"'s are recognizable
Louis Armstrong's grunts are so recognizable.
Seeing his sneaky laugh and the facial expressions Louis cracked me up so much!!!
I love how he doesn't talk because he knows it will give him away

Oh yeah! Talented and a great humanitarian. Definitely a credit to his race, the human race!

Satchmo = Happiness. Armstrong seems to be the most happy person in the world!!!!He's outstanding !!!!
There’s no sound that Mr Armstrong could make without being recognized. He’s a great singer especially It’s a wonderful world JT 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🐠🎣🛥🌴⛱😊🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
His voice is a dead give away, especially for the panel who knows it all
What an incredible era.
Any time I've seen Louis Armstrong on the screen I've found myself smiling! He just always comes across as one of the nicest guys! A music legend!
Eso parece cierto. De esas personas que te ponen de buen humor.
his personality is infectious. coolest guy ever! ^^
Louis Armstrong = LEGEND!
His smile is intoxicating.
Ok now I just cried...my dad loved his music! One of the gods of the music world!
How could Satchmo possibly disguise that wonderful voice.
Satchmo is legend. Loved the fact that the host called everyone Mr., Ms. or Mrs. very respectful indeed.
Siempre digo que me gusta tanto el presentador como los panelistas. Una época que, desgraciadamente, no volverá.

Louis Armstrong had and has one of the most recognizable voices in jazz music, it would have instantly given him away.
In music. Period
That would've been soooo hard for Louis, trying not to sound like he does
One of the all-time greatest jazz innovators too.
mmhhmm...
Few in history have ever brought so much joy to so many.
Thanks a million for introducing us to a happy man and the happy times !!
I love Louis Armstrong's smile. It's very contagious 😁
Sí. Realmente era muy difícil verlo serio.
Can you imagine the kind of HEROIC courage it took Pops to who be he was at the time of his life? Total belief in the power of love)

Good answer.....he used to come to my home town in La. and we so loved him forever
The ovation accorded Louis Armstrong seemed rather cool, in light of his stature in show business. I expected more enthusiasm for such a legend.

Notice how when he is signing his name he crosses the letter S instead of T from "Satchmo". Proving indeed...He was higher than a motherfucking kite.
