- Louisiana passed legislation in March giving Republican Governor Jeff Landry more command over the state's public defense system.
District defenders in charge of indigent defense were told about possible pay cuts, reversal of raises and encouraged them to open private practices.
Plan also ties district defender pay to fees that clients must pay their office whenever they're convicted.
Gary Chambers Jr., spoke with Roland Martin about Landry's outrageous power play that is threatening the rights of Louisiana residents.

EXACTLY if you want change you SHOULD vote...Votes are how the governor got elected. If you tried and could not vote, exhausted all avenues to vote, that's a different story, but not to vote at all and complain, this is what happens and what you get.....

I was a public defender in Louisiana for 6 years (2002-2008). My first year I handled misdemeanor cases with a case load of over 1,000 cases then I was "promoted" to handle felony cases my last 5 years with an annual case load averaging over 500 cases. The case loads for a Louisiana public defender well exceed the American Bar Association's (ABA) and the Louisiana Bar Association's recommendations. It is humanly impossible to handle that many cases adequately and would literally be legal malpractice. There have been decades of litigation and legislative actions to address the issue, but it seems like the situation has gotten worst not any better! I would say that my career as a public defender was somewhat successful in that I was trained by professors at Southern University Law Center to fight for my clients by filing a lot of different motions to get the District Attorney's Office to drop charges and/or offer favorable plea deals b/c their numbers game don't allow them to waste time on hearings on the motions so they were more motivated to just get rid of the case on our terms so that we could focus on the more serious cases. I noticed that they also talked about the prison system in Louisiana. I've been to the Louisiana State Penitentiary twice in my career. It is notoriously known as Angola b/c to this day it looks exactly like you have traveled back in time to a slave plantation with hundreds of black males working in the fields of the farm under the watchful eyes of white men mounted on horses armed with rifles and orders to shoot to kill if anyone of the prisoners try to escape b/c it is the maximum security prison for men convicted of murder, rape, robbery, and other violent crimes serving life sentences. You will leave that place, where hundreds of black men call home and will never leave alive, mentally disturbed!!!

I recall how Phil Scott and his group were celebrating the low Black voter turnout in Louisiana on his website, African Diaspora News Channel. Some of the people were talking about, "tailgating", instead of voting in the comments of his broadcast before the actual election took place. It's crazy, or maybe they're crazy. I've actually experienced these red hats first hand and the trauma they cause. They drive around the community with those big American flags waving off the back of their cars and it's absolutely terrifying to experience. Vote blue as if your life depends on it.

Voting is only one part of the Solution. What about pooling millions together to build schools to stop the school to prison pipeline. What about creating jobs for our children? Why not invest in or community?
