Living With Leg and Back Pain From Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

  • Leg and back pain may be the result of a condition called lumbar spinal stenosis, which affects nearly 14 million people who are most commonly adults over the age of 60.¹² The significant pain associated with lumbar spinal stenosis, or LSS, can have a negative impact on individuals, causing inactivity, disability, functional impairment, and potentially loss of independence.
We are joined by interventional pain management specialist Dr. Iden Cowan at the Capitol Pain Institute in Austin, Texas, for a closer look at a safe, minimally invasive treatment. The Vertiflex™ Procedure† by Boston Scientific has been clinically proven to provide effective long-term relief from the pain associated with LSS.

I’m glad this lady found a doctor who actual helped her. I’ve been to multiple specialists, physical therapy, and pain management. No one has helped me. I’m getting worse each day. I’ve lost all hope. I’m losing the use of my legs and feet. I’m in extreme pain 24 hours a day and I get very little sleep. Doctors won’t even prescribe medication except gabipentin which I can’t tolerate. No one should have to live like this.

I know what you mean. Doctors are controlled by government intervention these days. I was put on 100mg of Tramadol , which was made for back pain, and it works well. Our governments are pain sufferers worst enemy!

I became disabled wheelchair user at 44, after 4 years of back and neck pain, 6 surgeries and I lost my mobility and now suffer chronic pain daily in my neck and lower spine, I’ve just turned 50 and my life is derelict of function. 10 years of pain, 6-7 of disability. Spinal stenosis is not just an aging population disorder. I wish people would stop focusing so much on that and look at the full spectrum and how crippling and life changing this is.

Is this supposed to be first world healthcare in 2023? I really dont understand how people can tout effective healthcare, yet our healthcare system (which is supposedly the most advanced in the world) can barely actually cure anything. We have a healthcare system that gets paid for pointing out problems, not fixing them, and doctors get paid for graduating med school and earning a professional title, rather than curing anything. But none of this actually heals or helps patients, nor does it create any requirement for the healthcare industry to do so. A wheelchair bound 40 year old is a pitiful outcome for such a supposedly "advanced" medical system. Its crazy how people are still so fond of our medical system, despite it not even performing well or even effectively. People's faith in the effectiveness of our healthcare system is basically just its own religion at this point, not at all rooted in fact.

exactly it is not an aging disease you can have stenosis at any age. I am older now from waiting for something to be done but mine began in 2008 after a bad fall that I could not stand up from. The day after this fall my leg gave out and I fell slam onto my right shoulder and pulverized my rotator cuff-I have no rotator cuff. My right arm is in excruciating pain and I can barely use my arm. Nothing has been done to help me with any off it. I wear a glove on my right hand it is so cold from lack of circulation. My stenosis seems centered in my mid to lower back especially my tailbone. done my left leg then my right, both feet are so numb, painful, tingley. I was also told by an Orthopedic specialist my neck is hooped too. I started this painful journey at 55 years old and today I am 70. I have had Ostomy surgery and have an ileostomy for life. I can handle that but I cannot handle this pain and I don't give a rats ass at this time in my life about any addiction from pain meds I just want to get active again for the remaining years of my life, not that I want to go dancing or do backflips but sleeping, walking and sitting would be great!!

I wasn’t able to have children and have a career that I’d dreamed of. I wouldn’t wish this type of pain on anyone. It drops me at times and I literally have to lay down where ever I am - yesterday it was in a hardware store car park. I wish they’d pay attention to the fact that people like me and others have this in their 20s and even teen years it would help if health care professionals were more on top of being educated about it but tbh it’s ridiculous that this is considered an elderly disease. It makes it seem like it’s an age related issue and normal deterioration but it’s not. Wish this on no one praying more awareness brings more education and a possible cure.

I was diagnosed with Spinalstinosis at the age of 7... yes, 7 years old. I had surgery for it and everything. But i was so small i had to be put on steroids for about 5 months before i was "big enough" and the steroids ruin my hormones. And I'm now 30 years old and still suffering from Spinalstinosis along with lots of other things that come along with it. All growing up i was told that my pain was all in my head, so i thought the pain i was feeling was normal. Family, friends and even doctors dont believe me and never believed me or my pain. I get told i should just lose some weight and all my pain will go away, because they assume my joints and spine hurt for being "overweight". I heard it my whole life. So now im disabled and cant work anymore and now i can only walk for a few seconds at a time before im in excruciating pain. For the past 3 years now ive been having to use a wheelchair to go anywhere, and the doctors are still saying im not feeling any pain, im lying and im just being lazy. So ive lost all hope in getting help. The healthcare in this country or world in general just down right suck! Just because im not 50 years or older doesnt mean i dont have it. I was diagnosed in 2007 and only 2 doctors in my entire life have tried to help me. Everyone else only wants to give me pain meds (which i dont want) and they dont want me to see a specialist so they never refer me to anyone who can actually help me. I feel like im slowly just falling apart and decaying alone, but everyones just watching it happen... i know exactly how that woman feels, feeling like a burden, like a waste of space or a waste of a human life.. i wish people (doctors) cared more or even just believed people and their pain and would just HELP PEOPLE

I've had a formal diagnosis of spinal stenosis at age 30; suspected to have had this since age 19!!!! It can happen at any age but the younger you are when it becomes symptomatic the more severe pain you are likely to suffer. I've had severe debilitating spinal pain since I was 19 years old; I'm 42 now and my life has been very long. I was lucky enough to have 1 baby at 34 years old and being pregnant actually made me feel a lot better (pressure and possibly the hormone relaxin which is produced by only pregnant women). I've had 3 major spinal surgeries; starting at 20, then again at 25, and the most severe surgery at 27. I've tried 3x to fix it and I'm done! It is what it is and I need medication to help alleviate the severe pain everyday. Ice had over 300 spinal injections, I've been a guinea pig, 2 RF procedures failed. Spinal stenosis for the young is horrific. 😢 No one knows how awful it really is UNTIL it's you and then it's too late. 😢

I am so sorry for your suffering at an early age. I have endured this puke causing pain for the past 16 years, 3 surgeries, with no more possible, bone density too low for any fusions, and refuse opioids. For me, the Abbott Spinal Stimulator Implant is a Life Made in Heaven-Pain Free! An initial 5 day trial first to ensure it works, about 1 hour out patient installation, with a needle. I was one of 3 patients that ever endured this procedure without any anesthesia, at 74 years old. The final out patient, simple installation is only 1 1/2 hrs., pain free, with the pacemaker battery placed under the skin under your waste belt area, upper buttock, no big deal either. Now I am 90% active, physically 6-8 hrs per day, doing everything, including manual labor. This was my last resort, hate the thought, but So Happy I chose to go through with this procedure of my Abbot Stimulator, FDA Approved MRI device.

The reality is our healthcare system is nowhere near as advanced as people would like to believe it is, so doctors get paid lavish salaries just to kick the can down the road for diseases like this, rather than just saying healthcare is a failed institution that cant actually cure much of anything, despite the exorbitent salaries and research grants issued over the past century.

I wish you all the best. One thing that has helped me is using a little kid's plastic chair in the shower. Sometimes I can shower 15 - 20 mins without using the chair, while other times I use it for half my shower or even the entire shower. I also sometimes use a regular chair when preparing food in the kitchen. Obviously, excess weight exacerbates the problems. I find managing my weight helps. Aqua-therapy in a swimming pool helps me a lot.

If you have pain like these people describe.. your best bet is to go see a Neurosurgeon. I have been there. The real problem is the insurance companies, they make you go through physical therapy (which made me worse) then the injections in the spine, which worked.. for 2 days. Then the Neurosurgeon pulled the plug and scheduled my surgery.. Went in in the morning, operation lasted 1.25 hours, 30 minutes in recovery and then walked out to the can and went home. Recovery time was 60 days and it has been 4.5 years now without that kind of pain returning

I have been diagnosed at 42 with severe spinal stenosis, they will operate as the Neurosurgeon says conservative treatment now not an option, will have a laminectomy and fusion. I had a history of severe herniated disc in my lumber spine leading to Cauda Equina, 4 back surgeries and a Spinal Cord Stimulator. I also have Stenosis in my neck, I had adcf surgery a couple of years ago, I was told will probably need to have a laminectomy in a few years in my cervical spine, I have very weak arms that get fatigued easily. Same with my legs I walk for many years now with crutches, I lean forward on them when the pain gets super tight to alleviate the pain for a couple of seconds. Most videos show elderly people, am worried I will end up paralysed. I have been thinking I live in Irrland travelling to Mexico for Stem cell treatment, I hear they give Chemo and then take you regenerated stem cells. Something to look into heard works well for MS

You are now what ? 15 ? At that age You have a lot of young strong muscles that can protect your spine if you strengthen them. And due to Your age it is really easy. Strengthen Your core muscles and imo also the leg muscles. But to do that efficiently You need a program and some exercises tools. I suggest You to go to a qualified physiotherapist that works explicitly with physiotherapy only for this type of issues. I live in Sweden but if I lived in USA I would consult this guy: www.youtube.com/@Uprighthealth , If You live in England try this wonderful therapist: www.youtube.com/@AskDoctorJo
Whatever You do, DO NOT allow anyone to do any type of surgery on Your young strong body ! If You do surgery You put yourself at risk of a future in a wheelchair AND you lose long term quality of life even if the surgery at first may feel as it gives some relief. Exercise is the only long term solution fro Your problems.

I wish I could say that the Vertiflex procedure worked for me. This coming Wednesday will make eight weeks since my procedure, and I have seen no improvement. I had two implants. I have had my followup X-rays and the implants are in their proper position, but I still have to sit every five minutes and walking any distance is nearly impossible. This procedure is NOT cheap, and Medicare DOES NOT cover the implants, as this video states. I'm sure the procedure will help many people. Sadly, it just did not help me.

Yes l know what you mean l have lumbar stenosis since having my second L5/S1 discectomy 8 years ago and have sciatica and osteoarthritis from head to toe which ended my hgv driving career. I have every injections and epidurals etc. I have just had a C6 anterior discectomy and Fusion. But the top surgeon, spinal specialist and neurosurgeon who did it told me it would only help with my arm pain. He also sent me for a Mri with contrast and my L5/S1 disc is worn away and was so sincere when he told me the scar tissue was so bad that if he operated on it l would lose loss of motor function and probably end up in a wheelchair. I can't stand for long or sit for long and spend most of the day laying down with Morphine and others. I agree with my surgeon these people give people like myself False Hope which even causes anxiety and depression. If they could not get comfortable at night to go to sleep and even had half my pain. So how can they talk about pain. (Sorry for the rant.)

I’ve had the back surgery with them inserting screws. After a few days after the procedure, I started having nerve pain with the worse pain. When I get cold, my nerves feels like I’m on fire, literally on fire. It’s been about 3 months and I still have the nerve pain. I can’t take the cold at all. On to the that the surgery didn’t help my S I Joint pain. Do not I’m dealing with that as well. I’ve been to pain management and have gotten the steroid shot on on both sides. I can’t stand too long or walk a long time. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m supposed to go back to work soon. I don’t think I’ll be able to do it. I’ve been to pt and aqua therapy. Insurance will not approve any more. I’ve used a walker and a cane

I’d prefer quality of life over quantity. Opioids amongst other meds help enormously I Only take 5mg x 4 a day. If I don’t need them I don’t take them. I have a certain tolerance but they still help. It’s ridiculous to expect people to suffer so much when these meds work even if the need to increase them is necessary.
I’m only taking a quarter of what I once took. No morphine injects for three years. I’ve had Ct Guided injections n have done n do all that’s recomended with barely any help. I also have very severe fibromyalgia.

My leg buckels when I'm trying to walk & I'm all the time screaming out in sever pain & crying from this horrible pain .I do have a walker but in no way does it help much at all from this awful pain going down my leg & into my foot & now it's gotten to my knee . I pray & pray so much to Jesus to help me but I get no help so this is why I no longer have a desire for life & just want to die so badly .I'm always thinking of ways to end this hellish painful life .I'm at the complete end of my rope now .

I understand how you feel Diane. Because your husband has been fortunate with his spine health, he can’t even begin to understand what you have been through mentally and physically with the debilitating pain you are suffering. It’s hard for your husband to see you lying around and not functioning as you used too before your back issues. I think because you have had surgery , your husband thinks all should be okay now and why aren’t you up and about trying. After time has gone by, your husband has gotten weary of your complaints and inactivity. I am saying all this because I am going through a lot of this now.
Just an opinion Diane but I would not be getting any spinal adjustments with the fusions you have had and the stenosis. Chiropractors are a God send to many people but with your issues, I would avoid them. There are a few exercises you can do to strengthen your lower stomach and butt muscles that can help take pressure off your spinal nerves. This Doctor is on TH-cam. I can’t remember his name. I will look for it.
He also tells you what exercises to avoid which is critical.
I had an injection of cortisone before I had a laminectomy and fusion in the lumber vertebrae. For me the shot did nothing but for some people it helps lot.
