The only time I ever preordered was Crysis 2 cos I loved the original. I was still in high school and I saved for months for the $90 edition.
Never again. Now I try to not even get invested in games that haven't come out yet, let alone preorder it. There are exceptions to that but unless it's something by a studio that's almost never done me wrong (FromSoft, Platinum) then I might get a bit excited before release but I'll never preorder. Crysis 2 proved to me that a game can have amazing trailers and gameplay and can still play like garbage.

Last game I preordered was... well, I kickstarted Shenmue 3 back in 2015 (the one and only thing I have EVER helped crowdfund) and wouldn't you know it, they bent us over and fucked us, so I'm getting a refund for that as soon as they get their shit together and actually offer those refunds they promised. Apart from that, the last game I actually preordered was, uh... Borderlands 2 I think. And I never actually finished playing through that. So yeah, I haven't missed out on shit by not preordering. Actually, I don't even _buy_ games after they come out any more because, frankly, fuck almost all of them.
I’ve only preordered one game in my life, Kingdom Hearts 3. I did that because I got the collections on PS4 too. And I’m tempted to pre-order Persona 5 Royal, because I like Persona 5.

Assassin's Creed thing reminds me of when they tried to showcase FO4's new feature of being able to choose your character's gender and the crowd applauded like they never played the series before.

That’s so true of AC Odyssey. When Ubisoft presented the game as “you can play as either a male or female character” I kept thinking “Didn’t you already do that with Jacob & Evie in Syndicate?”
I suppose the difference is that now you can play the entire game as either one of the protagonists, whereas Jacob and Evie only could play a certain set of missions that were locked for the other character. It may not be a huge and ground-breaking difference, but it's still a change in gameplay.
Yeah people keep forgetting the difference. Additionally from the looks of it the only difference would be aesthetic, voice and some minor scene changes. There is no change to game-play like in Syndicate. I still do not get the anger at this.

To be fair, escapists upload these a week after they air on their website from what I remember.
I think that's because what they show at E3 isn't hype. It's a massive jizzfest meant to make fanboys cream themselves at the idea of being so close to their favourite thing in the world. I'm pretty sure Camgirls do the same thing but at least they pretend to like you.
Plenty of cynical and reasonable criticisms from other videos. Yahtzee obviously is satirical to an extent and cynical is his brand so this is just expected.

Jay Arby Syndicate had you switch between male and female characters, not choose the gender of the character you play as for the whole game.
that doesn't really make it better. Ubisoft has no idea how to invoke politics into a video game, they just sort of mention them IN GAME and then pretend it's a big deal outside of it.

It's that kind of reasoning that took me a few months to buy Breath of the Wild. I also use this same strategy for Pokemon, albeit for the reasoning of letting Bulbapedia do it's research on the new mechanics so I don't stumble around completely blind, because as much as Pokemon has made improvements to the overall formula, they're still as dense as a planet made of lead when it comes to how to evolve half the pokemon!

I study the info and gameplay shown before the games release date and I usually have a good Sense on wether game is going to be. Great, good. bad, or dog shit I’m hardly ever wrong When it comes to it. I know because I once bought a game cause it looked cool and it ended up being nothing like I imagine and I felt like I wasted money

You turn back, but the path you once took is no longer there, and the borders between the 3 are incomprehensible. You dont know how you know this, but if you were to even take one step into any of the areas, you would immediately be sucked in. You scream but no voice comes out, your heart races faster than it ever had before, you just want to leave.
And then you wake up, sleeping at your desk watching the E3 2018 lineup, you are pretty sure you fell asleep after the words Smash Bros. but you aren't quite sure. You take a look at the time, it is about 2:00 AM on a Sunday night, you instinctively open a Word Document, and type in the following words

I remember when bethesda touted the ability to play as a female in fallout 4 as if it hadn't been a feature since fallout 1. Yahtzee is absolutely right. We need to return to the days of demos. Really good demos that demonstrate all that we need to know about a game, in a nutshell, before we pay up for the final game. Pre-ordering is such a bad idea in comparison.
Edit: I don’t count alpha and beta builds as demos, because they’re nothing like the traditional demos that I’ve grown accustomed to. That is, a demo in my day would be the finalized first mission/level of the game. The keyword is “finalized,” because betas tend to still have bugs and kinks that don’t accurately represent the final product at launch. Well, in theory. There’s the issue that devs set up stupidly early deadlines that give us almost beta-quality stuff at launch, that takes months to years to fully patch. But that’s a story for another day.
GiRayne well, if we had demos again, which I always enjoyed namely for having free games as a poor child, we wouldn't have the nuts ass hype trains we got going on.
So yes: companies have every reason and right to not do demos. They would be held to a higher standard and make less money.

pre-orders are more profitable and if you can trick the consumers into following a practice that is business favored then why would they promote a practice that is consumer favored? As Yahtzee said, we the consumers need to stop making the pre-orders first. Demos exist to establish credibility by developers who don't have any. Back in the 90's almost all the developers were comparatively unknown so releasing demos built consumer trust. Until the AAA game industry completely implodes I doubt quality demos will come back. Interestingly a lot of indie studios will still release demos because they still need to establish that consumer confidence.
Me2893me I agree with and understand what you mean. Although it’s funny, because I don’t have any trust in the AAA industry as a result of the crap they tend to pull. They’re well-known, and yet I still need a demo to know what they’re gonna do, especially when things get rushed. So a demo of the finalized first level can show me how much they care.

Ubisoft is very corporate, they dont even think of gamers. They just know certain things will make money so they do the thing that makes money.
Well it is the first game where you can choose to play as a woman for the entire game. Liberation was a AA game for the vita so it is not in the main line. While Syndicate had a 50/50 split in the main missions between the Frye twins. So technically Ubisoft is not wrong but they keep doing that because of Unity.

He didn't have a problem with the tomb raider game in-and-of-itself, but rather the fact that it will be the third in a series where the 'tomb raider' of the title still isn't actually the 'tomb raider' of the title and I guess it appears to be milking it a bit now.

It's too easy to get swept along with the bright lights and the constant coverage and forget that a lot if not most of these games are created as obligatory products rather than as something with artistic integrity, often designed for broad appeal and the numbing of emotions rather than their stimulation. But at the same time it's a mistake to dismiss everything out of hand, as any genuine passion a developer had for their own contribution can shine through even the densest corporate machinery. Assume I said the same thing about every game: "Could be good or bad, but there's no way of knowing until it's been played through by someone who isn't being paid to shill for it." As a basic starting point, try considering what you aren't being shown as much as what you are. If you noticed, as I did, a couple of conspicuous edits in the Anthem and Rage 2 gameplay videos that didn't appear to signal a change of scene, ask yourself what was cut out that the publishers didn't want you to see, and why they didn't feel like the game could sell itself by its unembellished appearance alone. Also, consider the way the player in a gameplay video acts wholly unlike one in real life, usually moving slowly and rotating the camera languidly to drink in the expensive scenery, when a real player would probably want to move and look around a lot faster, and such a fundamental change of pacing would almost certainly impact any story elements that the gameplay video showcased*

This was one of Yahtzee's best E3 rants to date. Man, his rage over Assassin's Creed pretending to be progressive by doing the exact same thing they'd already done two titles earlier was so passionate it made me angry as well. Also, yay, we're getting a Beyond Good and Evil II, I hope that's as good as the first one instead of sucking a kajillion todgers like most sequels these days seem to do.
Also, he's absolutely right about pre-orders, honestly. What's the point of buying something before it's actually finished and playable? Call me old-fashioned, but I'd rather pay for something I can actually have.
Gretgor Exactly. Why pay for something you have no idea about? That’s what demos are for. But we live in a day and age in which demo-less games are torrented first before purchase. The problem is that not everyone follows through and actually buys after torrenting. What game devs need to learn is that you can fight piracy by offering a better deal to people who pay. It’s what GabeN talked of once.
I agree with your rant thing, but to be fair, pre-ordering doesn't charge you until the game is shipped - its just a commitment to buy when the time comes. I still rarely do it - i think 2 games offered bonuses I genuinely wanted.
Kyle Jacobs There still exists the problem of preorder exclusives that totally alienate customers. And the in-game bonuses from paying money early? Ha, ridiculous! That stuff should be earned from hours of gameplay, and should be available to everyone who buys the base game.

I think the excitement for Fallout 76 has been pretty muted since most Fallout fans want a single player story driven RPG.
and the more info that comes out the worse it is, no npcs, only meet players and robot butlers, forging your "own story and adventure" and remaking the world your way. i mean honestly the roleplaying aspects in fallotu 4 sucked, and the lines kept trying to jump at you so fast they overlapped each other, and the used the same voice actors/actress so much you hear them literally next to each other (i know it happened in oblivion but that was before bethesda was huge and couldnt afford people) and the roleplaying mechanics didnt matter it was all just a charimsa stat which you abused with goofy clothes and buffed items not getting better at it and picking a list of answers(also no list of answers and the wheel they gave showed nothingo f what you said so that made picking something a pain i nthe ass cus half the time the "right choice" made you shoot a guy) but fuck at least there WAS some kind of rpg elements in the shooter game we got with fallout 4. now its just the forest/rust/ark/long dark/project zomboid/ etc etc etc. with a fallout skin its a very nice skin the art team is still doing an amazing job i wish they werent the only skilled team in whatever chickenshit outfit place they are working in cus dammit they need a better team to make their amazingly detailed and breathtaking worlds ooze character, depth, story and lore that makes you give a shit.
stalker series has passion and love behind it what it lacks in the engine and graphical details it makes up for in atmosphere and depth. stalker is a much more terrifying nuclear wasteland then fallout 4 ever could be. one time barely got out of the first area got attacked by 2 bandits killed them lost 30% of health used 2 medkits used alot of ammo, wolves decided to hunt me, wasnt paying attention to gyger counter, and was busy dodging wolves with fancy footwork so didnt see the ledge fell down slide down hill into a space distortion and died, saved 2 hours previously. almost made me quit the game but stalkers dont stop till they fat and retired or stripped of everything and dead face down.

jacob portdaven uhhh... I was playing fallout 4 on survival. Killed a group of bandits, left with 30% percent health, couldn't snort stimpacks like they were cocaine like in other games so I was getting back to my settlement before my infection killed me, rad scorpion ambushed me and while trying to run, I didn't see the ledge where I feel in a highly radiated pool. Lost 2 hours not because I'm stupid and didn't hit the easy to reach quick save key, but because you can only save when you sleep on a bed in survival difficulty. Your point?
To add a comment related to the main post. Most people complaining are those who picked up fallout 3 one day and call themselves a hardcore fan. As someone who played all of them, love the story, world and role play elements, AND knowing this is only an offshoot game, I'm incredibly looking forward to what Bethesda try with this game, and can't wait to play while people bitch and moan. The funniest part is when they aren't working on online games, people seem to want nothing more than play Bethesda's awesome games with other people.

Imagine what outrage there would be if they did this stuff in any other medium, just imagine if Disney or Warner Bros decided you needed to buy a separate TV in order to view their movies. I want to play a few console-exclusive games, but since I have limited income, paying hundreds of dollars just to buy a console in order to buy and play a game I want simply isn't a viable option for me.

I haven't per-ordered a game in 10 years. The whole point of per-order used to be to secure a physical copy of the game early before the retailer ran out of stock. With digital download games, all that is moot now. So aside from bonus content per-ordering is entirely pointless in my eyes. Unless you REALLY want a physical copy which is understandable, if the game you're buying isn't just a CD that contains a digital redemption code, or worse with fallout76, an ACTUAL PIECE OF CARDBOARD.

Last game I pre-ordered was no mans sky. Won’t be making that mistake again. You make a good point. I could imagine how much these companies would sweat if no one pro-ordered for even 6 months. I too miss the days when games actually tried to earn my hard earned cash. When companies weren’t afraid to truly try a new style of gameplay or have an unorthodox mechanic that set the game aside from everything else, in fact back when games weren’t trying to outcopy each other, when a games style plays homage to the roots it came from. The only way we will get control of our industry again is if we can get control of ourselves.
Here, here! What we NEED! I was ecstatic to see indie games break into mainstream. I thought "it be a new era", a renaissance. Its been years now. Instead, indie games are awash in mainstream backflow. Mostly doing the same outcopy, trend seeking BS as the AAA world. (The AAA was supposed to learn from the indie! Not the other way around.)
Yesteryear's limitations on hardware and software _forced_ level designers to think outside the box. Now we have 64-bit processors and ultra HD graphics. And our games are the interactive equivalent of bleached dough. Plain, tasteless, insubstantial. We have to go on a diet.
Willem yeah I had high hopes for the indie scene as well but what players and most new indie developers, I feel, forget to realize that comes with small team development is sacrifice, usually in fidelity, to keep progress moving. Alot of indie teams are usually less than 5 to 10 manned teams and most of them are programmers. Which is why most indie game tend to go the 2D route. It’s a lot easier to pay an artist to make a beautiful 2D static image that can use advantage of image parallax vs fully rendered and animated 3D assets.
But again you are right, the AAA heads saw what was happening and then decided to hop on the band wagon and flooded the market, whether with publishing support of these small teams or using their highly manned teams and lots of $$$ to push out the innovation and make copy/paste of what is great. I remember when Braid and Super Meat Boy first came out and thinking what a fun twist that these games where bringing to already created mechanics and scenes throughout gaming history and adding a nice, albeit sometimes morbid take on story telling and level design.
As the video said, the bloated corporate pigs are too greedy and try to force us to see better graphics with the same mechanics year in and out as innovation. It isn’t and adding in a small handful of new small features with each new iteration isn’t revolution or innovation. The fact that Ubisoft can slap the same game with new coats of paint, I’m looking at you farcry, makes me want to puke.
The same can be said with COD, and BF is quickly doing the same. Companies need to follow the examples of companies like Guerrilla Games with Horizon Zero Dawn and take a leap of faith on mechanics that a company has not tried before, doesn’t matter if someone else has, try something new, make it fresh and different. Stop being afraid and stop taking the advice of greedy companies that are out to make the quickest bucks that they can.

Jake Fields I do appreciate the art of indie games. That is part of their charm. And they still explore more depth into gameplay and theme. Though, I see many independent titles attempt essentially the same things. Not always a bad thing. Maybe they could pool some of their resources more? Through some shared, independently developed/open source platform(s).
I guess I hadn't thought about larger companies moving to saturate the market. I can see it. Specifically on consoles and distribution services. AAA titles certainly could do with more chutzpah. There's currently no need to develop beyond what is "safe". Which brings us back to the video. I'm not sure how or if gamers could force a complete change on our own.
Maybe if indie developers put pressure on the market as well? Yes. Maybe when those AAA clones get schooled...
But yes, let's not pre-purchase. Or at least only after the hype has worn off and some details are released. When we can look with a scrutinizing eye.

my last preorder was almost 6 years ago and it was a greenlight game on steam devs abandoned it and i swore nope no more preorders im done until i see a release date, and then see how the game does 2 weeks post release date its Schrödinger's game it exists yet doesnt exist its in a weird ethereal state of flux and reality kind like a great old one. companies would go into full panic mode if more then half the gaming population just stopped preordering and waited 2 weeks post release and the reason demos dont exist(legal ones) is because youd find out soon enough that the game isnt something you already have, played, or loved before and frankly 60 bucks is a bit much you can wait for a sale.

Actually, in Odyssey you can decide whether the Player Character is male or female while in Syndicate both Jacob and Evie exist in the story and have their own separate missions (and you play Jacob in more missions).

I can imagine that your choice of gender could probably make an impact on how the game plays out, incentivizing multiple play-throughs. It might be a stretch, but it could be interesting to see if Ubisoft went in that direction.
That would depend on your own point of view. Some might argue the gender having no impact on the character at all would be more progressive. Some might think being able to play a female character throughout the entire game instead of Evie having a slightly smaller role in the story than Jacob would be preferable.

How do you download the games?
Steve Larry I use a wireless hotspot generated by my cell phone. We have unlimited data, but the hotspot is still limited, so I can't use it to play online. I generally just get physical copies of games and use the hotspot on occasion to get updates.
I don't know why you would even want to buy a nu-bioware game or a game published by EA in the last decade. Bioware hasn't made a good game since Dragon Age Origins.

I completely forgot that I bought GTA V on PC "before release", but at that point I'd been waiting for it for a year and completed the story of GTA IV. I loved every GTA game as a dick around driving and shooting sandbox, so I knew I'd buy it anyway.
So I bought it like 3 days before the release day in April and got the Online bonus money, because why not.
Also, at that point, everyone knew it was a good game (the singleplayer, Online can fuck off) and only the optimization could turn out bad, and I was OK with GTA IV so I couldn't care less.
RE2, DMC 5 and Sekiro were the things that saved E3 for me

As nice as it would be to slowly go back to how things were, i doubt they will any time soon, it's practically engraved in society now to get things as soon as they come out then move on a few weeks later
