Biggest difference, you don't see the freedom bird everyday at Paris Island. At San Diego, you are training right next to the airport, freedom is on the other side of that fence. At P.I. freedom is swimming across a swamp filled with alligators, the only way on and off is across that bridge.

@@BK-uy9nj Bro women were trouble. We'd be in formation marching to the chow hall as a female series were falling in to leave. Being blue balled, you or another recruit would always get caught trying to sneak a side eye glance. Out of nowhere the screeching voice of a female DI screaming "what are you looking at, recruit?" My DI's would have a meltdown and explode on us because another DI had to correct his recruits.

Actually - M.C.R.D.-S.D. is flat, right next to Lindbergh Field. The Rifle and Infantry basic training is done at Camp Pendleton, north of S.D. off the I-5. (( Recruits are loaded onto busses at S.D. and sent north to Camp Pendleton for 2nd Phase of "Boot Camp". At least they were in the "Vietnam Era". )).
There are some very serious mountains at Camp San Onofre. If it snowed in that area ( it does not ) there would be a serious ski resort built in the Pendleton mountains. :-)

I went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego during the Viet Nam conflict. I don't know whether the training Parris Island was tougher or not. San Diego International Airport, Lindbergh Field was right across the fence from MCRD San Diego and that generated it's own particular mental stress. The guys who went to PI called us "Hollywood Marines" who were issued surfboards and sunglasses during basic training. All I have to say to those who went through boot camp at PI is yes it did break my heart when I had to turn them in when basic training was finished.

That "demarcation line" of the Mississippi river defining which MCRD one attends is not solid. I enlisted in Detroit, Michigan back in the middle 1960's, which is well east of the Mississippi river, yet I was sent to San Diego for recruit training. When the chips are down, you don't ask which coast a guy went through boot camp, you automatically cover each other's six and get the job done because you are both Marines. There were guys I argued with and did knuckle dances on, but when the shit hit the fan, I shared my ammo with them if they ran short, because they had my back as I had theirs.

I also went through basic at PI in 1976. Starting out June on the yellow foot prints in the middle of the night, then crazy choas in reception and ending up in 2nd Battion, platoon 251 with the number 41 marked on everything assigned to me. Twevel weeks of sand fleas and no see'ems chowing down on us, caked in sand and mud, totally soaked in sweat with it being so humid. Either loaded up with gear humping and running down the road and paths under a blistering sun, or bends and thrust on hot pavement, with DI's on your ass every second is what I remember. I recall when in third phase some first phase recruit trying to kill himself by jumping out the window from the third floor. I did not see the jump or landing. I saw him twitching around on the sidewalk all messed up as two DI's stood by him chewing his ass out for breaking government property, being the window for starters. They did not back off till a couple of corpman got there. It was rumored the recruit died at sickbay.
      Yeah that's PI.
I ended up in motor transport MOS 3531 at MCAS El Toro, and Tustin LTA, 3rd MAW, WTS-37 which later become WTS-373. Often TDY at Twently-Nine Palms out at the EAF supporting training for the weekend warriors doing their summer drill. Lots of equipment runs to North Island Air Station in Diego. Got out in 80 and head off to college.

I figure wherever you went it was the most traumatic experience of your young life. If you survive that crucible you earn the title, then it doesn't matter where you did it, just that you did do it.

If you have a choice, choose San Diego. The weather is more stable and more conducive to being outdoors. San Diego winters are a low of 40-50 degrees F with a high of 60, Summers are a low of 50 and a high of 60-80 degrees F. The 55 degree F Pacific Ocean keeps the are temperatures stable. Go inland 10-20 miles, and add 10-20 degrees during Summer.

Hahahahahaha! Someone else must've taken mine! Besides, in my time there, the boogie board hadn't been invented, although we made our own from 1/4" plywood, hand sanded, and a coat of shellack. I loved Santa Monica Beach. Our "skim boards" as we called them were heavy but fun to use. Also, a steel-wheeled roller skate with folded cardboard for a seat made for lots of sparks going downhill on asphalt streets especially as it got dark. You guessed it, their was the occasional seat fire. Life was simple and good.

I'm a San Diego Marine. The hills are tough at first. But eventually it's no big deal. You get in incredible shape after a while, especially when you go to SOI or MCT out there and live on those things. My orders read V32 (3/2 Camp Lejeune). I arrived, checked in. When that was done in 2 days, I had an 18 mile hump the third day. And it was flat. That part was nice except it was mostly black top the entire fuckin thing, and humid as fuck which I wasn't used to anymore after being out west for 7 months. Nothings ever going to be nice and comfy and pleasant all the time. You'll have to endure and work through some kind of irritation no matter where you go. Hump'n in 95 F heat with 100% humidity in Lejeune my first time was pretty miserable, even though it was flat. And that's where I was introduced to chaffing LOL. That sucked LOL.

    *I have done both*
I've been stationed on both coasts as an infantryman.
East Coast: Very old school, technically proficient, and very stringent. The swamps/woods suck and so does the cold.
West Coast: Physically WAY more demanding, but way more laid back. There's a reason why ITB on the West Coast is shared with Recon. West Coast Marines are almost always physically stronger. Also, SoCal rubs off on Marines here. Even down in Coronado during boat school/scout swimmer school its more laid back.
Generally, West Coast Marines are more mature as you are EXPECTED to be very good at your job and physically sound. On the East, its more baby fuck fuck games and micromanagement.
That being said command is a big influencer as well.
    Cheers

My dad went to Parris Island at the age of 17 in August of 1950. A guy broke his arm just getting off of the bus. It's hotter than the gates of hell there, and humid. You don't leave duiring training, no family visits, even during graduation, no PX visits. My dad went to the PX his last day to buy a suitcase. Boots were punished physically and mentally. Even back then they referred to the San Diego Marines as Hollywood Marines. My dad did go to San Diego for radio school and said the weather was perfect, it was the nicest place he had ever been. He also went to Pickle Meadow for cold weather training before shipping out to Korea.

Both coasts have equal challenges, the challenges are simply different forms. The real question is which company is the hardest. Killer kilo for life!

Grad Parris Island in 89. Did MCT and SOI at Gieger. That was all roughly 21 weeks of training the last 8 being all Infantry....into the Fleet . Thought I knew my s... But it was like going from collage ball to the NFL. Thats when school really began. 2/2nd Marines! Second to none. Semper Fi!

Jimmy Figueroa you're missing the point. Marines are trained to be a marksman with a rifle and you barely can ever own a gun in cali

Nope, they keep that shit there so when California decides to feel a little independent, they send the next fresh batch of recruits to the liberal fair

Carrying a gun does not make you safer... California houses the most elite warriors in our military. Whether you take a bike ride by Coronado and see the Navy Seals train or visit the beach and see the U.S. Marines holding maneuvering drills. You can also look up at the sky and catch an F-35 flyover. The world's elite are everywhere... no need for John Doe to carry a semi just for show.

If you are leagally immigrating you would have no problem trying to join the Marine Corps. I say trying because just because you apply does not mean you get to head to boot camp. Best advise I can give you is contact the nearest Counselate or the Embassy in Canbaerra and make an appointment with a Counsular Officer. You can also visit canberra dot usembassy dot gov and uscis dot gov to search immigration requirements. Your greatest hurdle at the moment is immigration not recruiting.

The difference is the Humidity, thats it. If you want to train in a Suana, then PI it is. If you want to train in spectacular weather then San Diego it is.

The biggest difference is the geographic location and climate. In San Diego the weather is good year round but more hills to climb. In Parris Island you have to deal with the swamps, bugs, high humidity and sometimes it gets cold. West Coast the best coast!
