      Maybe it's because memes tend to only be a few lines and an image, or one or the other, while even a short skit can fit in quite a bit of dialog. Since D&D tends to be more longform and more about stories of things happening, it makes sense that jokes about it need to be a bit longform as well.

    I had an experience like this the first time I dm’d. Basically, I had the party investigating an orc attack on a merchant caravan, but when they kept searching for loot I decided to give them something. That something ended up being a minor necromantic artifact I made up on the spot (the player searching was a necromancer) that the caravan’s owner was going to sell. Thankfully they didn’t ask about what it did, so I figured I could come up with something later- maybe use it to give the Necromancer some kind of bonus or at least let the party sell it for money
    Unbeknownst to me, the party assumed that the artifact was illegal and sinister, and _murdered_ someone to hide that they had taken it. I didn’t want that to lead to nothing, so I gave the item a bit more lore, and it’s already becoming the central plot Mcguffin the BBEG wants

      Reverse engineering the murder, and then applying the 5 Why's to the perpetrator is the bread & butter of a good mystery design. Sometimes when you're done, you wind up with a sympathetic murderer who killed an evil person, and then the players have to figure out how they're going to handle it. There are so many possibilities, and on the DM side moderate upfront prep. After that, the session itself is just free-flow jazz.

    Also, since you might see this Mr.XP
    I want you to know that because of your content, I looked into DnD, as it’s never been something I was interested in, and I can’t say I’ve ever had so much fun.
    A friend of mine is the DM of our campaign, and I’m now hooked to the story of my half orc, Paladin, Barbarian seeking revenge against a death knight that killed the love of his love right in front of him during our second session.
    It’s so much fun, I didn’t know it could be. And I want to thank you for helping changing The way I see DnD.

    Okay but having to improv increasingly deranged twists is EXACTLY how every mystery I've ever run has gone 😭

  • @gosha305
    @gosha305 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +79

    The one true way to write mysteries is to not write them at all, and just go with the resolution being whatever the most utterly deranged theory your players come up with.

    • @ZombieApocalypse09
      @ZombieApocalypse09 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      That is supremely unsatisfying for anyone who likes mysteries.

    • @xandermichael836
      @xandermichael836 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @ZombieApocalypse09 The players never notice. Also, the people who love mysteries are the toughest to please because they always think their idea is better.
      Hence, going along with the players, for you I'd go with everyone else and wait towards the end for you to be "right all along" you would just be happy.

    • @ZombieApocalypse09
      @ZombieApocalypse09 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@xandermichael836 that is extremely condescending and insulting to a stranger you know nothing about.
      The problem with going with whatever a player comes up with is that mysteries are about planting and payoff. A deranged theory from a player has no planting therefore no payoff. It is just bad.
      Invariably it will have holes and just generally feel unrewarding to people who were invested in the narrative.
      Here's an idea: if you don't like mysteries don't run one.
