Tanya Schupp Hey! Hope you are better now. I would recommend seeing a functional medicine doctor. Your doctors could have wrongly diagnosed you with fibromyalgia. Most patients that are diagnosed with fibro usually some other root cause of their pain. Whether that being Lyme, ebv virus, any other co infections. To bring down your inflammation, remove gluten, diary, processed foods, any other allergens that you have. I personally know quite of few people that fully healed their fibromyalgia!
I've been a type one diabetic since 1989 until recently I've been trying to convince the dieticians I can survive and control my diabetes with a low carb diet simply because I do not like pasta, rice, potatoes, beans, bread, these foods I've never liked since childhood and only now 27years later the dieticians are convinced you can survive on a low carb diet I'm living proof 😆
I think it's just hard for American's to give up their carbohydrates. I used to do DM education on an Indian Reservation and it was very difficult to convince people to give up their fry bread. I think the ADA recommendations are what they are because they know people are going to eat carbs and if their gonna do it anyway at least make it a whole grain. I'm also a nurse and have tried to eat low carb and I just don't know what to eat if I don't eat carbs.

This sounds like my life. I am a scientist, am normal weight, and even have the same HbA1c as you! I haven't been officially diagnosed yet, but have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes both with my current pregnancy and previous pregnancy and had failed my postpartum test with my first but then Covid happened so my Endocrinologist didn't follow-up and then we moved. My Mom has LADA too but looks and acts like a more typical diabetic. I am more strict with my diet now that I have to test my glucose 4x/day and am more sensitive with pregnancy, but either way I follow a loose keto diet.
Her description of her diet shows about zero percent fat, except for a little in chicken skin and in salmon. She really did not explain where her fat intake comes from. She eats lots of veggies. Even broccoli has about 5 carbs per cup. I wish she had told where her fat comes from.
I like the approach here, only half way through video, but as good as a ketogenic diet is, I don’t know one person who has stick with it due to its rigorous high fat consumption. It’s send over and over a mainly while foods plant based diet still remains the best long term plan when irritated with some fish and may possibly.
I just did an hair mineral analysis test and no mercury showed up but I was really high in uranium and had alot of cadmium and a little lead. Could I actually have mercury even though it didn't show on the test? I used to eat lots of tuna and salmon and have two metal dental fillings.
How does a person get 30 gm of protein at each meal if one only eats chicken and fish (no red meat)? It is recommended that a person only eat fish 2x per week. That leaves only chicken. We have been told not to eat processed foods which eliminates most turkey products like sausage, bacon, lunchmeats (unless you cook your own turkey). Dairy is not recommended which eliminates yogurt and cheese. Even beans have been touted to contain a toxic substance (not sure if it is only canned beans, dried beans or both). Rice is discouraged because of the arsenic. Soy products are not recommended either, All that leaves is seeds and nuts and those are very fattening if you eat too much. What other foods can provide good sources of protein? Also if the paleo diet is recommended for patients with diabetes or autoimmune disease's like Hashimotos,, what about the aciditiy of the meats and how that has been implicated in certain types of cancers?
Surirose: 30 g of protein are not that hard to get. Chicken has 20-25% protein so you need about 150 g per meal which isn't really all that much, eggs have about 12% so three eggs will do the trick. Any non-processed meat is fine. Dairy is not recommended because most dairy products contain too many carbs but hard, aged cheese does not. I'm not talking about the kind of cheese you put on your hamburger here. You want to look for high-quality cheese (Gouda, Edam, Gruyère, true Swiss cheese, ...)
How will that bring his carbs down? Carrots and beet roots are high carb and juicing them removes even the fibers in it. Thanks for your reply. However, he is doing well by cutting back his insulin a bit, then lowering his carbs, checking his blood sugars a lot more often and adjusting what he eats if he needs to. He's feeling good and bringing his blood sugars closer to where he wants them. There's some great information in Dr. Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution" that is helping him a lot!
Carol: Juicing veggies is not the answer. Your husband wants to keep his carbs as low as possible, and this includes veggies. If he eats too much protein, some of it may get converted to glucose (gluconeogenesis). Dr. Richard Bernstein's advice has helped many people. I don't understand a lot of this. I'm 56 a retired nurse, along time ago I did courses in biology and chemistry equivalent to first year university. The young woman said she is getting her energy off fat not sugar. This doesn't make sense. Inside each cell of your body the glucose (sugar) is oxidized in part of the metabolism called the Krebs cycle. This process produces Carbon dioxide and energy. It is the same chemical process that happens when a flame is burning from a candle. I learnt that in chemistry. Glucose is the most basic form of sugar. The digestion breaks every carbohydrate down into glucose, combines it with insulin from the pancreas and carries it through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to each cell where the glucose is oxidized into energy for the body to use. From nursing I learned that a problem with diabetes is when not enough insulin is produced the body will convert stored glucose, called glycogen, into glucose. When it runs out of that the body will convert fat into glycogen and then convert the glycogen into glucose. When it runs out of fat it will convert protein into fat, fat into glycogen and glycogen into glucose in order to produce energy. The problem with converting fat into glycogen is that the body does it inefficiently and produces a toxic byproduct called ketones. This is a form of alcohol that is deadly to cells. We all produce keatons if we starve ourselves. Because of the overproduction of ketones in diabetes they can go into a ketoacidotic coma and sustain brain damage or die. So, the girl's statement that she's using fat for energy not sugar doesn't make sense. The doctor didn't correct her which makes me suspicious of his motives.

apparently you need to learn a little more. ketones aren't toxic, they are fuel. ketoacidosis is very different. i don't say this to be condescending, but really, there are A LOT of books, lectures, interviews out there that explain all this. she's not just a girl--she's an ORTHOPEDIC SPINE SURGEON so i would suggest she knows more on this than do you. hyman didn't correct her because he also knows more than you on this topic

Your body produces all the glucose is needs by a mechanism called gluconeogenesis. This means that even if you never consume another gram of carbs for the rest of your life, you'll be just fine.

However the second way the body gets an energy source is from fat but the process of using fat for energy is a bit more difficult. Our body tends to go to carbohydrates because it is a quick source of energy. Here lies the problem- we as Americans consume too much white flour and sugar, our organs of metabolism are exhausted and are not functioning normally any longer. Our body does not have to burn fat for energy as our carb load is very heavy. The goal is to try to teach the body how to burn fat for fuel but having a carb adapted body can make it difficult. Fasting, staying away from all white flour and sugar and incorporating more healthy fats shifts our metabolism and requirement for insulin drops. Hope this helps with your understanding. Anne

I am trying to educate myself in nutrition for Type 2 diabetes but gave up after around 30 minutes and a migraine. Not helpful for me at all. Disappointed.

If you do a search above on his interview about his current book "Eat Fat, Get Thin" and you will get info that's easier to understand with different talk show hosts. You can also get his book if you want, but really, watch TH-cam videos because they are free! Also watch his interview with Dr. Christiane Northrup. Type in both his name and hers in the search box. She's an OB and so interesting!! You have to take charge of learning about health because most doctors know nothing!! I had to figure out on my own that after having monthly stomach aches for 46 YEARS, I was gluten intolerant!! NO DOCTOR HAD A CLUE!!
I will watch it and see if I can help you out. Bottom line is stick to whole foods. No processed foods. Healthy meats and vegetables and a few low glycemic index fruits. Some vegetables have high glycemic index also ( a measure of how easily a food turns into sugar). You can look up high glycemic foods and low glycemic foods. Whole grains may be eaten in a limited amount (avoid gluten, soy and dairy or eliminate these products one by one and see how you feel). Eat organic when possible. Avoid corn unless organic (otherwise it is GMO - genetically modified food). Avoid juices, even smoothies. Reduce stress, increase exercise and relaxation through meditation or listening to music, etc.Engage with people. Get 8 hrs sleep.
