  • This video will show you how to convert your drum brakes to disc brakes. This is on a 1970 Chevelle but all Muscle Cars from about the 1955 to 1970s are about the same.
    I will show you the basics of the old drum brakes and how they work, removing the old steering rod from the drum brake assembly and installing it on the new disc brake assembly.
    How to remove and replace the brake system proportioning valve and connect all the brake lines.
    Installing the new spindles are covered in the following videos:
    Channel: David Lis
    How to Rebuild Front Suspension on Car - Part 1 Disassembly
    • How to Rebuild Front S...
    How to Rebuild Front Suspension on Car - Part 2 Reassembly
    • How to Rebuild Front S...
    How to install the steering rods on backing plates, installing the rotors, pack the bearing with grease, install the brake pads, tighten the wheel bearing nuts, and tapping on the dusk caps.
    It will also show how to bench bleed the maser cylinder, and adjust the connecting rod from the power booster to the brake peddle. Moving on to installing the master cylinder, bleeding all the brake lines, and finally connecting the vacuum line from the power booster to the intake manifold. And lastly showing that the only wheels that will fit on the car are 14 inch wheels that are for disc brakes only and not drum brakes or going to the next size 15 inch wheel.
    This was not done in a shop but in my driveway. The intent is to give you confidence so you to can do this brake conversion and get the self satisfaction of converting your drum brakes (that do not stop the car) to power assisted disc brakes that will increase your own personal safety and everyone in the car with good stopping capability.

    Excellent video and great job explaining the upgrade. I am in process of upgrading my 71 Camaro to disc breaks and found out the 14 inch wheels do not work with the conversion. I wondered until now that it was not something I did but simply the rims do not clear regardless. I will upgrade to 15 x 8 so I can go wide on the back to make the SS look more buff. I suggest you do more videos since your an excellent teacher and one of the best I could understand every step of the way. Kleff

      David Lis Thanks David I watched those videos as well. I am just about done with my swap except I saved the proportioning valve for last. In this video you changed the front driver side brake like to fit correctly. Do you know if I can screw the original larger fitting into the fitting with the rubber cap? It looks like I could do so and cap off the smaller line. Any thoughts?

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One line comes into the proportioning valve from the master cylinder. There are 2 lines going out to the front brakes, right and left and the last line located at the back of the valve goes to the rear brakes. The rubber cap is where the electric plug connects to the indicator light on the dash board.

    Thank you for the informative video. David, love your Malibu, and it looks like an extremely clean survivor. I have a near identical 70 Malibu I just purchased that I will be doing a drum to disc swap, and this video will enable me me tackle a job I've never attempted before.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at my other 2 videos on How to Rebuild a Front
      Suspension. If you are going to change to disc brakes, you have to change the spindles. That means removing the coil spring. If you are going to do all that work, I would suggest changing out all the old bushings. It makes a big difference in the way it handles. I know it is a lot of work but you only have to do the job once. Just take your time and do a little at a time. It took me three weeks to do this.
      The other thing I replaced was the rear bushing. Now it drives like just out of the factory.
      I go to a lot of car shows and I do not see Malibu's. There are all SS. I can tell most of the conversion by looking at the dash. All SS cars had round gauges.
      I like my Malibu with a 350 2bbl carburetor, 4 speed. The last time I checked I got 14 mpg. Mine also has factory a/c. I do not show this car because it is a driver.

    • @MrRudyhj
      @MrRudyhj 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I found the other videos already, and will refer to them for the helpful insight. I will be replacing everything I can, as I only want to do this once.
      Yes, I also see many SS Chevelles at the car shows here in western BC, and I see a lot of clones too. Having been there, done that, my 70 will remain exactly as it is, Only other deviation from totally stock, other than the disc brake conversion, may be upgrading to 4 bbl intake and carb, and possibly dual exhaust.
      I'd encourage you to show your car, they don't HAVE to be perfect to be admired. From what I've seen of it, yours looks very deserving of attention. Mine will be shown on occasion, flaws and all.

    I enjoyed the video but I wish you would of said where you got the conversion kit. I have not pack bearings in a long time but I use to put the grease in one palm of my hand then keep dragging the bearing through the grease until full. Good idea to change all brake lines like you did too when doing a conversion. Totally forgot you might have to get new rims. Not all steering arms are the same between drum and disc brakes. I would also (which you probably already did) change all my ball joints, steering linkage, springs, shocks, and possibly control arms too at the same time. Might as well upgrade sway bars too. LOL Oh yea I put clear tube over the bleeders on the brake calibers so I do not spray brake fluid all over.

      You can move the proportioning valve a little depending on how much extra brake line you have. Make your own little bracket. The other thing is how close to the brake lines are the headers? You might need to make a little heat shield to prevent the lines from getting to hot.

      Did you blench bleed the master cylinder so there is no air in the lines?
      The kit I purchased master cylinder only worked for 1 year, after it went out of warentee and I had to replace it.
      Take the caliper off from the disc and slowly press the peddle and see if it works, be careful not to press to hard or fast so the cylinders don't come. You are only trying to see if there is a little motion.

      Fer sure! I'm about to buy a '65 Ford Econoline van/pickup. Which is basically a Falcon with a light pickup truck body on top. I don't like drum brakes on any vehicle and never understood why automobile companies didn't switch over to disc a long time ago. As they're a far simpler design and despite what them charging us more for discs that drum? They're actually cheaper to build and have fewer moving parts.
      Next thing on my list is to find a way of at least mildly supercharging the carb. Later? A beefed-up coolant system. I live in extremely hot weather.

      They sell kits for the back. They are easier because you don't have to change out the spindles and the coil springs to deal with. I believe you just have to change out the backing plates and everything bolts on to them. Hook up the brake line and away you go. Leave the break line connection lose and fill the master cylinder with break fluid and it will slowly fill up the break lines. It makes it easier to bled out the lines. Start from the farthest away from the master cylinder.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used the new proportioning valve but I did not change all the brake lines. The rear brake line is a single line that is separated in two by the differential, and goes to each rear brake. I just bolted the line to the rear of the new proportioning valve.
      The line running under the engine to the passenger side brake was the old one. The line running to the front drivers side broke at the fitting so I needed a new line.
      The two other new lines went from the proportioning valve to the master cylinder.
      I have no idea who would sell pre-bent lines but O'Rielly's Auto Parts will rent you a brake line bending tool. It takes a little practice but you will get the hang of it. Practice on the old brake lines. Take your time because this takes longer than you think.

      I used the same brake line going to the back brakes, I just cleaned off all the old tar, etc. This car still has 80% of the undercoating from the factory. It was always in dry weather so it is not rusty. But if you don't like the way it looks or if it is rusty, this is the time to replace it.
      The kit came with the two new brake lines from the master cylinder to the proportion valve, a new line from the proportion valve to drivers side and another for the passenger side brake. I did not replace the line going to the passenger side. The proportion valve was included in the kit.
      I borrowed a pipe bending tool from a friend but some auto parts stores rent them. It takes a little practice to use it but once you get going, you will be ok. Practice on an old brake line.
      If you don't like the way the brake lines look, change them all out now. I know it is a lot of work but it is easier now than in the future. You don't want to work on it again.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you bench bleed the master cylinder. You should be able to just open the bleeders on the calipers and in a little time, the fluid should start flowing.
      So, in your system, the back reservoir is going down but the front one remains the same.
      Did you loosen the line going into the front parts of the master cylinder and see if fluid leaks out?

    Hey Dave, quick question, i just converted my Chevy II to disc brakes all around, do I need to use a proportioning valve tool to initially bleed the brakes? Thank you in advance.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Be careful when you first drive the car because this is really going to stop, nothing like those drum brakes.

    • @ThaLou-zv1xu

      David Lis, hey David, another quick question, I recently converted my drum brakes to disc brakes all around. I bought a vacuum along with 15 gallon air compressor in order to bleed the brakes. How long does it take to bleed the brakes? I don't seem to be getting fluid to the rear brakes.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Put brake fluid in the master cylinder and loosen the bleeders on the year brakes. The brake fluid will flow out. It take a few minutes but as the air escapes from the brake lines, the fluid start coming out. Then bleed them to get out the remaining air in the lines.

    • @ThaLou-zv1xu
      @ThaLou-zv1xu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Lis, thanks Dave did some work on it today. Repositioned the rear brake line so that it all falls below the master cylinder. Opened up the rear brake bleeding screws and will check it in the morning.

    where did you get new kit from?

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Useful Entertainment I was going to buy it from National Parts Depot but I ended up buying it from some other vendor, same kit but a little cheaper. I was not happy with them because they didn't send me all the parts the first time, the rotors where not clean, etc., so you do not want to use them. Use, NPD.
      The Street Bandit Disc Brakes from NPD is the right one. But there are two parts, Standard Spindles, and then you need the Booster and Master Cylinder Combo Kit. It is the same thing as the SSBC Performance Brake Systems Kit but cost more.
      Remember, after you put these on, you will need 14 inch wheels that are for disc brakes or you have to 15 inch wheels like I did. This they did not tell me.

    Why is important to bench-bleed a replacement master cylinder?

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because it is easier to do it on the bench versus in the car.
      The new master cylinder comes dry with no fluid. By bleeding it you put fluid through all the channels in the unit and get the air out. If you do it on the car, all that air will go in the lines and it will take you hours to get it out.
      On the bench, you keep on pumping it until all the air is out then transfer it to the car and then there it not much air in the lines.

      In perfect world where you operate, it always works great the first time. But it the rear breaks bleeder valve strips or is rusted closed or if you break the line, it usually takes me more time.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are no stupid questions, if you don't know there are many others that do no know that are afraid to ask.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but if some on that break fluid get you your new paint somehow, you wish you would have been more careful because brake fluid eats paint. I have had the bench bleed temporary lines slip out and shoot the brake fluid in the air.
      You are right but I don't do it that way.

    I just did this misery on my 58 Caddy. His setup isnt gonna work any better than mine did. Notice how much slide room he has on the caliper bolt when its tightened up.... about an 1/8 of an inch if that. That caliper bolt needs to be about 1/4 inch longer to slide enough to use the full thickness of the pad

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand the comment. My brakes work real good.

    • @frankstas9751
      @frankstas9751 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at 23:06 see where the bolts are both tightened up? Notice there is oly about 1/8 of clearance from the shoulder of the bolt to the edge of the caliper ear. Those calipers slide towards the center of the car. As soon as they slide that 1/8 of an inch they got nowhere to go

    • @frankstas9751
      @frankstas9751 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Essientially in my case I basically had no brakes no matter how hard I hit em. I finally took off the caliper and removed the pads and then reinstalled just the calipers and then tried to slide them and found they were only moving like an 1/8 because the caliper ear was hitting the shoulder of the caliper bolt. So as soon as the first 1/8 of pad was worn down, that was it. Im glad yours are working, wish mine were. Good Luck

      How else can you do it? My driveway is a mess anyway. After these major jobs I usually clean it. I put liquid bleach in a pan and mix it some dry laundry detergent. When I pore it on the bad spots and and run it with my foot, let it set for a while and wash it off. You can also rub in some kitty litter.
