Good job getting the Saturn up and running. The fuse popping was quite startling. I almost made the mistake of plugging my japanese Saturn into a 230V outlet the other day. Luckily I never turned the power on.
nice that you got the Saturn working! Just a thought, it may be better to measure the voltages on a working power supply, get the broken one working and measure its voltages, then plug it into the motherboard. Having it short out while connected to the motherboard could potentially damage the motherboard. Saturns are common, but if it were a rare board, I would only connect the PSU once you know it works and outputs the right voltages. Good job man!
I ended up with one of these early models as well, with a socketed BIOS as a bonus. The PSU looked exactly same as the one in this video. I hate using step-down converters so I ended up unsoldering the AC jack from the original PSU and fitting it on a later 240V PSU, then unsoldered the coloured cables and soldered them to the same pinout on the later PSU. All fits in and works perfectly in my case. But I can understand not wanting to desolder the coloured cables and swap them, it does look a little black burned mess on mine but hey, noone else is going to look inside my console and it works! Both were 5 pins in my case, just that the 240V PSU expected to slot directly onto the motherboard rather than a cabled socket.
Hey Luke! I´ve been watching your videos for a while, but I´m kinda noobish when it comes to arcades. But I wanna learn more, that´s why I´m watching. Could you maybe make a Arcade 101 series when you explain like how everything works and what everything is and so on... Thought you might be the right guy to do that since you can repair what ever comes in your way.
Wow, the inside of the Japanese Sega Saturn is completely different than the Model 1 Sega Saturn released in the US "the power supply isn't attached to the lid, the power and reset buttons are not connected like shown in the video"
From what I can see, the 'capacitor' you replaced is not a capacitor. Note the legend on the PCB says VR1? That means it is actually a varistor (surge arrestor). It wouldhave blown because its clamping voltage was way below the 240V the last person plugged it into. :)
man I wish I had access to all those Japanese systems that you do but I live in misssouri so no imports for me lol great vid I like watching repair vids
what is the diode you replaced at the begging. The little black square thing. I am trying to fix my Saturn as it has screen flickering now and I think its my psu. So im going to try to fix my Saturn but having trouble finding a working psu.
awesome repair job. I got myself the same model Saturn a few years ago but the fuse was blown. Did you still replace the fuse and if so what type of fuse do you need to replace?
Yes wrong power supply is always a bad one with different degrees of bad. I blew a wire in the transformer of my Sony MSX 2+ machine (I got from the Netherlands & thought had been converted - grr sellers). A friend of mine has just about finished building a new power supply circuit for it (cheaper than trying to fix the transformer). Has it working bar the -12V needed for the cartridge slot.
I have a quick question lukemorese1. When your power light was blinking what components did you solder because i am having the same problem but didn't know what parts you solder after you got the capacity fix.
Hello, I am troubleshooting my Sega Saturn and was wondering if you have an idea. I was trying to fix a mod on my Saturn but I must have created a serious problem. My Saturn turns on, has disc assembly movement, and transmits a signal to the TV but no picture or sound. I assume it is part of the power supply but not sure which component is faulty.
Hi lukemorse1. Do you have any ideas why my Dreamcast might reset all the time? It reads games fine but the system will just reset back to the start during gameplay. It is also quite loud and almost grindy sounding, is this normal? Hope you can help even a little bit, thank you.
Hello Lukemorse1, i live in Japan and got a saturn from an auction, the problem is that it starts and turns off constantly, could you please give me at least a clue about what should i check?, any help will be really appreciated.
Hi Luke I have two Dreamcast one of them is a Japanese 1 that I accidentally plugged a UK 230v power supply into if I swap the power board from my UK pal Dreamcast and put it into the Japanese Dreamcast will it work
I was worried about ruining my saturn, when I was in the UK I bought a Hong Kong Saturn, which is a white NTSC-J saturn but has 220 power supply, so I had no trouble in UK. But now I'm back in Canada and I can't use it, any ideas where I could pick up a Japanese Sega Saturn PS? I know theres a bunch of different ones, not sure what to do. Cheers for the great vids!
Question, will you ever make a video of fixing a saturn with no video and no sound? Mines was working but then the fuse popped...I replaced the fuse and it turns on but no video... I have 8 saturns so I swapped plenty to make sure it wasn;t just a power board issue.
No matter which model you have, they all become faulty. The Saturn is average in quality, more so power board and lenses. If they go on the blink, always replace them with news ones if you can get them. A Japanese model in the UK, got for the white 240V model, as no need for a step down adaptor. Or just simply fit a UK power board. Same goes with the Dreamcast.
Damn luke youre lucky, I messed up a saturn durning a region job and got it fixed, but something mustve touched inside when I was playing, and the fuse blew just like this one. Mine on the other hand damaged something on the board, causing it to have video issues (strange on screen coulours) Mind givin me help on finding out what is the issue?
I hv the same problem, I hv Japanese Saturn, I use step down transformer. replace the varistor still it gets blown Now you say that the Varistor act as big fuse, cuz I change the varistor a few time already, I suspect theres another problem which cause the varistor blown, see im not electronic literate, i do thankful if you can point me what could cause the varistor to blown. Many Thanks!
the other day i asked you about a japonese saturn ,and you saide the price in yens ,and i dont know how much is that in euros? because if the price was good i would like to know if you accept visa tranfer. thank you for your time and keep doing this cool videos. thanks!
I'm struggling to find a GNR 05D221K in the UK. Does anybody know of a good UK supplier? eBay is letting me down, as i Maplin and several other UK component sellers! Thanks.
@Daniel Glior You and what content? LOL. What good are you at providing this community with content and support?! You're not helping it at all, the only thing you are doing is making it look bad. gtfo
Good job getting the Saturn up and running. The fuse popping was quite startling. I almost made the mistake of plugging my japanese Saturn into a 230V outlet the other day. Luckily I never turned the power on.
Also, super interesting video as always. The progression and watching you logically work through the problem is fascinating.
I have never seen a sega saturn IRL.
I still had to watch this whole video, just because of awesome!

Man, that fuse popping was intense there, haha. Makes me very glad that Japanese 100v consoles run perfectly fine in the 120v sockets over here, lol.
Watching this makes me wish my Sega CD Model 1, Game Gear and original DS were working
Awesome tutural to say the least!!!You showed us all the diffrent problemes that might be the problem!
AAA+++ Man,thanks for the info!
and good to see you got it working mate. Glad my dead saturn was of some help
Hope the Saturn gets back on it's feet soon! Great job so far, Luke :)
really like watching the progression
Always good to see progress
you seem like a such a nice person, helping others out and all that. hope good stuff comes to you. _b
keeping the dreamcast alive nice work
Man that was a challange bro. Glad too see you managed too fix it. Good stuff! :p
These repair vids by Luke are awesome.

Oh wow! The splash screen is different from an american Saturn. I did not realize that, Guess I learn something new every day!
Great video! I have a model 2 saturn that I have just gotten to this same point... A new laser costs more then my saturn did lol.

That was entertaining to watch when the fuse popped. LOL!
that "POP" scared the crap outta me
Haha, laughed when the PSU blew. Happened a while ago to a Playstation I had and scared the life out of me.
Another great video, thanks Luke!
Good to see you got it mate :D
man I wish I had access to all those Japanese systems that you do but I live in misssouri so no imports for me lol great vid I like watching repair vids
Very helpful, thanks Luke.
what is the diode you replaced at the begging. The little black square thing. I am trying to fix my Saturn as it has screen flickering now and I think its my psu. So im going to try to fix my Saturn but having trouble finding a working psu.
It's a Diode bridge.
Say Luke, is there a place to buy replacement lasers and other replacement parts new or do you hit the auction sites to find parts?
Awesome as always- Luke : )

Is it possible to mod a jpn psu 100v, to the european 230/240V system ? if not , where can i buy a eu psu used or so ?
Cheers

lol that was an awesome video luke, especially that blown capacitor xD
How do you detach the PSU board completely?
Hi lukemorse1. Do you have any ideas why my Dreamcast might reset all the time? It reads games fine but the system will just reset back to the start during gameplay. It is also quite loud and almost grindy sounding, is this normal? Hope you can help even a little bit, thank you.

I see someday you will open an arcade & repair & restaurant
Finally some fireworks!. XD
I suck at repairing/replacing lasers, got a PS2 on hiatus because of it...
