  • It's time for some voyage planning now that the summer is coming to a close. There's just one question...do we go with Plan A or Plan B?

    Well having a Plan B should always be Plan A :D
    Hope you guys are staying save and wrestling up Plan C, D and E these days... as most of us have to ;-)

      I love this, and you're so right. Plan A? Have a Plan B! As for us, we're nestled in a protected marina in the north of Scotland for the foreseeable future. We're not allowed to leave, and even if we could there is nowhere to go...all countries around are closed to recreational boats at the moment. However, we are lucky to be here and grateful that we had not already started cruising for the season. We've seen some of the troubles other cruising boats are having and our hearts go out to them.
      We're taking care to self-isolate and stay healthy, and are using this time to work on Paragon, cook, have some delightful baking triumphs (and some disasters!) and, of course, edit our videos.
      We hope all is well with you also. Take care and be safe. ⚓-Monique

      @@drakeParagon we got stuck in austria while dealing with paperwork and visiting family and are now unable to get back to greece and our boat, which is our home as well. But also here a good chance to edit videos, make more backup plans and do what can be done... we are certainly stilk on the good end of how things could be!

    My home state of Michigan has had a bottle return law for more than 40 years (10 cents). The automated return machines have been around for at least 20 years. Your encounter is a reminder that they are definitely not ubiquitous! :-)

    Your DKK to USD is a bit off, you have overpriced everything :) That being said, Greenland is fairly expensive.
    I think the siren was just a test. In mainland Denmark they test them once each year, always in the spring.
    The dogs are used for sled-riding, hunting and scaring off polarbears.

    10c for every recyclable package here in Awestralia

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that sounds lovely. Is it as easy to return the items as it was in Greenland? ⚓-Monique

  • @philthefarrier9469
    @philthefarrier9469 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In California, we pay a tax of 10 cents and there is nowhere to claim it back. Some recycling centers would buy the plastic and glass at scrap price so a full trash can was about worth about $1.50. Costs more to drive there

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That does rather seem a bit mad and a waste. I la la love how they tackle the recycling of bottles in Greenland and other places. The Faroe Islands are another place that really have a great system with the same type of machine seen here. It's cool because everyone, and I mean *everyone*, recycles their bottles and cans. It's also nice because you know all the bottles and cans will be reused.
      It's actually a bit funny. Every time there is a festival or gathering with any amount of drinking going on, little kids will run around with trash bags collecting empty bottles and cans from everyone. They're actually quite...assertive in some cases. They'll ask if you're finished, and then sternly tell you that they'll be back in 5 minutes so DON'T give it to the other kid. Ha, I've actually caught a little hand reaching for *my not quite finished* beer and had to swat him away.
      I know we save all bottles and cans when we visit these various places, and the payoff is delightful. Returning all the bottles and cans is usually enough to buy a nice bottle of whisky and some other items for the next leg of our journey! ⚓-Monique

    • @drakeParagon

      Yes, shotguns or rifles. Greenlaners don't need any kind of permit or license to purchase a gun in Greenland. I think the only requirement to purchase one may be that you're 16. -> th-cam.com/video/GStWW_iw0Uk/w-d-xo.html

    Where’s the sailing?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jim, there's a lot of sailing on this channel...perhaps check out our almost 2 week sail from Faroe to Svalbard here: th-cam.com/video/F6NZJgroiE0/w-d-xo.html However, a large part of what we do is explore, meet people and, of course, prepare for our next sail. Thus the provisioning in this episode.
      It's so interesting because provisioning in different countries can be quite challenging at times. Maybe it's an open market, maybe you don't speak the language, maybe the items are not so fresh....so many issues. However, that's all part of the adventure, or at least we think so.
      We hope you are well and keeping safe. Take care and fair winds to you. ⚓-Monique
