@Tyler Ley. If I were your student and I had to do a project, I would test to see if there were any viable alternatives for column reinforcement without stirrups using GFRP. Want to DIY some reinforced columns with GFRP but Lowe’s doesn’t sell the related stirrups.
Another method to increase bar spacing is to use larger dia. bars. E.g. #8 bar has almost twice the area of #6 bars, so see whether you can replace 4#6 bars with 2#8 bars (usually it is OK due to rounding off during design) and get sufficient space between bars.
