Since we started traveling in October 2023, most of our destination decisions have been based on the cheapest transportation option for our desired travel dates. It has made for some fun and unexpected experiences!
Even though we've always wanted to visit Paris, it wasn't on our list until we were scouting flights from Albania and Montenegro back to Western Europe and found cheap airfare from Tivat, Montenegro. That's the main reason we went to Kotor (video here: • Tiny but MIGHTY! (Mont... ) and the only reason we came to Paris.
One of the best ways to get to know a city is by walking across it, and that's what we do in this video while answering two questions:
    1) Can we afford to live in Paris?
    2) Would we want to live in Paris?
We started at the Pantheon on the eastern side of the city and zigzagged our way to the Arc de Triomphe for a spectacular view of sunset and the Eiffel Tower at night.
We had tickets to enter the Arc at 8:50 and thought we would have more than enough time, but filming and sightseeing always takes longer than we expect.
Along the way we stopped by several top spots while we discussed some important livability factors:
    0:47 The Pantheon
    1:13 Public Transportation in Paris
    1:51 Jardin du Luxembourg
    2:35 Staying Safe in Paris
    3:16 The Latin Quarter
    3:28 Notre-Dame de Paris
    3:59 Pont Neuf (New Bridge)
    4:15 Paris is Quiet
4:40 Lunch at Restaurant la Pyramide
5:18 Groceries & Restaurants in Paris
    5:39 The Louvre
6:02 Quality of Life & Things To Do in Paris
    8:48 Place Vendôme
    9:24 Place de la Concorde
    9:39 Hôtel des Invalides
    10:09 Healthcare in France
    10:40 The Eiffel Tower
11:35 Could we afford to live in Paris?
12:39 Would we want to live in Paris?
    13:29 Champs-Élysées
    13:42 Arc de Triomphe
    14:55 Outtakes

Paris is the best city I've ever visited for tourists. Despite its size, because of the strict height limitation for buildings in the core it feels sunny and approachable. The sidewalks are mostly wide and flat as you say, and many of the neighborhoods are just incredibly appealing and scenic. Add a plethora of gorgeous parks, world-class museums, and delightful bistros everywhere, it is a joy to visit.

    • @user-aero68
      @user-aero68 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I find it wonderful on a sunny day and often dreary on grey, cloudy days, especially outside of the main avenues and boulevards - grey sidewalks, little greenery. It can seem like a maze of concrete and stone at times. I do agree though, it is definitely the most striking and beautiful city in the world, especially when the sun decides to join in!

@@johnschieffelin3226 I am afraid you did not see the whole of Paris, but only what you call appealing and scenic. Not every Parisian is enjoying your « delightful bistros ». You have a tourist point of view… Go to the 20th arrondissement and you will have another, more realistic, point of view about life in Paris. As to the height limitation for buildings, this was true in Haussmann’s time (1850-1870) and his (excellent) rules remained valid until 1882. But it seems you have not seen Tour Montparnasse… or the 19th, the 20th, the 13th arrondissements. You did not see Paris at all.

I'm an American from Michigan. I moved to Paris with my French husband and 3 children over 34 years ago. The youngest was five at the time, and the older girls were 12 and 14. After finishing high school, the older girls returned to the US . By the youngest was more French than American.
It is expensive in the Paris region for housing. Luckily my husband and I could afford it.
We're retired now and will stay here for the health care and relaxed lifestyle.

Well I didn't give it away and I was right. I knew your next trip was going to be Paris when I saw Amelia sitting in the Metro station on your last video. My wife and I moved to Paris from San Francisco in 2000 for a 2 year expat work assignment. When it was time to return I basically said no I'm not leaving, so I retired early. We lived in Paris for 11 years and now live on the Côte d'Azur. We just love the quality of life in France. (My mother by the way lived in Arlington Heights for several years)

Alsace, Brittany, the Tarn Gorges, the mountainous regions, the Loire region, and many others, many choose a boat trip on the Canal du Midi, you are in such a quiet place! You pass by small villages to do your shopping, especially at the producers of vegetables, fruits, eggs or poultry!

Many foreign visitors to Paris always sum up the place as the historic city, bounded by the ring road, a very old city, and where the main historical sites and landmarks are located, like Eiffel tower, Arc De Triomphe, Notre Dame, etc... . But this is only a relatively small part of the real Paris area, about 2.2 million inhabitants. Real life for millions of inhabitants is in the huge metropolitan area around the city, which stretches for dozens of miles, where most tourists never go, and populated by about 10 million people. This is where one can find the gigantic shopping malls, by the dozens, or the most important car dealerships or superstores, etc...Disneyland Paris for example, is about 20 miles east of the historic city.

Funny story: Back in 2011, my wife and I visited Paris for the first time. On our second day there, in the morning, we asked our hotelier where we might be able to get crepes for breakfast. He looked at me like I had grown a third eye on my forehead, sputtered with exasperation and claimed, "It is not done!" (I swear he fulfilled about three French stereotypes in the space of 15 seconds, and it was hilarious!). I apologized profusely and explained that I was just an ignorant American, then asked when would be an appropriate time to get crepes. He calmed down somewhat, and told us we could get them in the afternoon if we wished. 😀

Something about restaurant prices US vs France. In France, the price listed is the price you pay. In the US, you have to add tax and tip. In the US for example if the menu says $20, you also pay approx 20% tip and something like 7% tip. (Personally I don't tip on tax but some people do.) that's $25.40. in France 20€ is 20€.

Preparing to go to France 20 years ago, I listened to CDs in my car. Not following along in the book, I missed a lot. I kept hearing one phrase, which sounded like "Antie Kate Kay." Finally, my curiosity got the best of me, so I pulled over to the side of the road and looked up the phrase. It turned out to be "Un ticket de quai" which means "a boarding pass."
Fast forward to the actual trip. My friend and I had just boarded a train in station and I heard over the loudspeaker: "Validez votre ticket de quai." I said to myself, "I can understand that: it means Validate your boarding pass." Then I told my friend, "We forgot to validate our boarding passes!" So I grabbed his and jumped out of the coach, stamped them, and jumped back on in the nick of time.

@@Emmanuel_DH I am a French Parisian too. Paris is less and less civilized, absolutely true (but is not the whole world going that sad way ?). As to Paris being quiet and peaceful, it depends where and when you go - like anywhere -. You cannot go to Chateau Rouge - as an example - at 2am and complain. But why would you go ? During the day no problem, even in Barbès and the like. Now, anywhere in the world you can be stabbed to death at noon in a posh district - no zero risk anywhere.

I think the Americans are a little bit obsessed with security in Paris. Parisians walk around the city a lot at any time. There are sometimes robberies, but very rarely assaults by simple passers-by. There is no danger if you avoid walking alone, late at night, in the stations and two districts a little warmer than others in the 18th and 19th arrondissement. In the tourist areas there are many police. Objectively it is much less risky to walk in Paris than in New York or London.

It's actually right behind her, the Obelisk taken by Napoleon from the Amon Temple in Luxor, Egypt. It was built by Ramses II, so it' s 13th century BC ! It blows my mind everytime I'm near it.
