Edinburgh: The Most Overrated Fish & Chips Yet!
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2025
- The final day of my little adventure. I caught the Caledonian Sleeper train from London to Edinburgh where I took in as many of the sights as I could. I even stopped to try some 'world famous' fish & chips.

Eyup everyone, this video has been a bit divisive and that really wasn't my intention. The plan was to turn up last minute, with no research and just have a look around. I was absolutely knackered so maybe came across a bit grumpy but Edinburgh is a beautiful city and I'd like to come back with Helen and make a more upbeat vlog. If any locals would like to come and give us a tour, that would be great. My email address is in the description. 😊
Hey don't worry, I enjoyed it, it was 'real' nice to watch unplanned things, you're doing a good job, don't change!
Hello James I love watching your videos and I wondered if you have tips on starting a vlog as I’m thinking of starting vlog
Don't beat yourself up James. Really enjoyed the vlogs you did unplanned. Not worth making yourself ill. It looked very tiring travelling like you did 😊
Would love to see you and Helen back in Edinburgh 👍
@@trace7676 agree
Dont beat yourself up James. Great that you mix it up a bit. I always enjoy watching.
Been enjoying your travel videos James. Good to mix it up. Il be watching what ever you do. Best wishes.
Great video, as always. Love your content and appreciate the massive effort you always put into it. Thanks.
Thanks for taking us on a great trip! I reckon if you'd had a bit of sleep on the train, you'd have been ok, but you looked dazed and shattered when you came out the station. A snooze in the park might have helped (I've seen it done discreetly!)
Still, nothing ventured nothing gained. I'm sure the next wandering adventure will benefit from the do's and don'ts learned from this one.
Rooms are just going to get more n more expensive as summer comes along, aren't they. If you scroll the calender on the YHA website you can find dates and (cheaper) prices for private rooms for odd nights here n there...
Great stuff!
I’m glad you went home I couldn’t have coped watching you going anywhere else, I was bloody knackered watching😂
I know I shouldn’t laugh when you say you’re tired but it’s the way you tell ‘em …(as Frank Carson would say :-)
At 22:20 that phone call reminded me of a conversation that Ricky Gervais would have had with Carl Pilkington... Helen being Ricky 😂
"im not going on a camel again" google it haha
Love these random destinations James,WOW Edinburgh looks amazing, never ever been but having watched your superb vlog it's definitely on my bucket list, as always thanks for sharing ❤️👍
Another brilliant video 👍👍
I'm a bloke in my 50's as well. I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping in a hostel room with even 1 bloke in it that I didn't know, let alone 7. You definitely made the right choice there. Sounds like it's time to get back to normality and recharge your batteries. All the best.
I've been back a few days already and feeling much better already 😊
You shoulda gone to Brighton from London …..only an hour and small B&B/Travelodge’s a plenty….🤓🍺🥂🤷🏼♂️
I'm in my 50's too. I live only a mile from Newquay airport in Cornwall and there are flights to Scotland. I was actually thinking of Aberdeen in the winter, hoping for snow. Maybe stay for 2 nights in a Trevelodge or Premier Inn. I think Edinburgh or Glasgow are too big and touristy. I don't know what to do to be honest.
@@bythecurb good
@@Simon-fr4ts agree, I like the little places that never get a mention. Everywhere is interesting, everywhere has history.
Edinburgh is knackering when you get to my age and don't really have a plan. Premier Inn at Falkirk is usually reasonable, 55 sheets a night at the moment and worth considering if you ever return. Thanks for the upload James.
It's very hard to be spontaneous AND budget conscious when you rock up to a city you're not familiar with, especially when you're also knackered from travelling but did a brilliant job with this odyssey James! There's no need to pay £00s for hotel rooms in Edinburgh or Glasgow but finding cheap ones near the city centres does take a bit of looking, like with any big city....and it's probably never going to be cheap if you arrive on the night you want to stay. Glasgow has a few affordable pod-type hotels including Revolver and Citizen M.....Maldrons hotel is also nice and can be cheap depending when you book....my personal favourite is Grasshoppers hotel right next to the central station (not sure if they still do it, but they used to have free homemade cupcakes available for guests 24/7!!)
Congratulations James, you've smashed it. Amazing. I thought you would fly into Edinburgh. You are my Braveheart. Amazing tour of Edinburgh. Thank you. Love to you Helen. Love the banter.
James don’t beat yourself up all your vlogs are brilliant and entertaining 😊 Hope your rested now … onwards and upwards 😎
And this vlog is exactly why you’re so popular James, we love your honesty and down to earth ways showing us a honest, down to earth reviews of everywhere you go. Keep it up 👏👏👏😘
Thank you 😊❤️
I was going to go there for 3 days with Voel coaches from North Wales . Thank's James you showed me Edinburgh Saved me some money won't be going too busy.
I laughed when you said, "oh god I'm not walking up there" 😂
Enjoyed going on your journey with you James it’s cost you a fortune & there’s no point in making ya self ill sleep deprivation is not good. You’ve done a fantastic job walking all them miles round London & Edinburgh 💙
I was looking forward to this video James but you needed help lad to have someone show you around Edinburgh. You really missed out on a lot
I went last Sept, it was crazy busy & unfortunately rained the whole day. We stayed in Linlithgow, short train journey to Edinburgh. I will need to do it again as i didnt have a very positive experience 😢. X
Great following your journeys, and as others have said, really brave to let people choose where you go so kudos to you! Looking forward to seeing your next adventures with Helen too 👍🏻
Thank you, some fun trips with Hellibobs coming up 😊
I tried the "Sleeper" in February and was so excited to experience the journey. Euston to Inverness was my route. Lovely staff and service but the rolling stock is well passed its shelf life. I had a room but you do not get sleep in them either, too rickety, too noisy and frequent jolts. I would like to think there will be an investment in rolling stock but in toaday's UK, no chance. Great vlog though. 😊
Ha, I thought it was just me who thought this way. Agree with all your comments and I believe it was quite airless. Don’t remember any contact with staff (I boarded late in the day). Can’t remember whether I was going for an interview or had a long haul flight to catch, was absolutely shattered. If I had been able to sleep lengthways instead of side ways on, may have been a bit better, felt as if I was going to be tipped out at every stop 😂, and there was plenty of those. This was many years ago, never repeated the ‘experience’.
It belongs to the holyrood debacle, not WM, Snp are incapable of organising ferries to the many islands and fail monumentally in every thing they do. #ScrapHolyrood and sort out most of Scotland's problems.
Really enjoyed this series of videos. Fair play taking on all those tourist hot stops . How you stayed upright after a day in London , then no sleep is beyond me . Keep it up 👍
James, excellent video, don’t be constrained by time or schedules, let it flow naturally, you know what’s best for you. Take care!
It's mad them not having any towels, like they weren't expecting the train that'd been on the way for several hours
Love watching all your videos from here in perth western australia. Really enjoy all your travels and good laughs with yourself and helen please keep those videos rolling in look forward to more to come your a natural😊
I’ve really enjoyed this series of vlogs James. When you got to the quieter bit with all them people, apparently it’s where they used to do hangings. We did open top bus tour , you walked some miles there. You film whatever you want , people watch if they want to or don’t . Just be you, cos you are doing great.
The cheapest accommodation is the University digs about a mile from the centre, they rent them out when students go home.
What ever video you do. I enjoy them. Keep going 😂
I feel your fatigue, traveling can really take it out of you when you're trying to see a lot in a short time. We viewed the Royal Britannia Yacht and then went to The FishMarket for fish and chips, I really enjoyed my meal there. Loved hearing the chat with Helen. Thanks for the tour around Edinburgh. Enjoy your time with your daughter, hope you got some rest. See you soon in the van, Dorothy probably missed you. Take care.
Thank you, I'm back home and having a lovely trip in Dorothy with Helen 😊
I've done that Caledonian sleeper seated from Euston to Aberdeen and it was an absolute nightmare, I don't blame you for calling it a day.
Me too, it creaks and sounds like it needs a good service. Bloody awful.
These are new coaches and not a patch on the old ones .I'd never use the sleeper
A goodly measure of larrup on a long journey usually suffices, mr King.
So have I. They should call it the Caledonian Sleepless.
Loved the road trip, totally different, well done. I'm waiting for the 50K :)
Edinburgh is my favourite city. You need a few days there to explore and some stamina for all the hills and closes. You can take the tram down to Leith and get nicer fish and chips overlooking the sea. The seating is for the Edinburgh Tattoo which they have every year at the same time as the festival. Also if you go up Calton Hill its not too high but you get great views of the city and castle, out to the sea and Arthurs seat. I stayed in a B&B quite close to Calton Hill so walking distance to the centre and very reasonable.
The things you do for us James, eating rubbish fish n chips and walking miles lol, O and not forgetting sleeping in hostels lol. LOVE IT 😂 seeetheee Maxx
Haha thanks Maxx
Actually I thought you didn't look good James and thought get yersen back home, get rested up. I don't think you need worry about getting video's out or even the Content, just you and Helen and yer down to earth attitude is what we like. Just be you not what you think you got to be to please others. That's what we like about you both. Hope you feeling better.
Keep ya chin up JAMES excellent editing/viewing .. Thanks 🎉
The A1 is the longest numbered road in the UK and runs from near St Pauls in London where you were the other day and ends in the centre of Edinburgh where you are in this vlog. shame you had to end this early but l am sure you will try somthing similar again soon.
We've always called them Railway Stations. A train isn't going to do much unless there's a loco attached to it. Nobody says Plane Station do they?
Aye.. now then..that statue with the fella with a road cone on his head.. story is the local council just leave it up their because every time they took it down someone just put one back on..so 2 men with a truck to remove it was getting to expensive..
You've got my sympathises James. Living very very close to a tourist focused town it's almost a no go area in the high season. Thought you were pushing yourself very hard in this episode James take care...😎🇬🇷
James loving these vlogs well done
Well done for doing the 3 days , James ! Great content as ever. Those hotel prices were ridiculous. I am in Edinburgh at the moment so will avoid that chippy you went to ! Thank you for what you do.
I live in Edinburgh and really enjoyed your video. The best chipshop in Edinburgh is Giovanis, Northfield Broadway, but you can't sit in, obviously not in the town centre. It's always a rip off in the town centre. All the best 👍
Oh my James, you took me right back to times spent with my relatives from Barnsley when you said you would be really "badly", that is what they used to say. Sweets were spice, coat was coit, love it. Well done on your trip, you really covered some miles. Looking forward to the next vlog
Edinburgh is probably my most favourite city I have ever visited,so much history and a variety of places to eat but can be quite hilly but well worth the effort 💛James is probably tired and cranky, doing too much in a short amount of time 😣
I loved the comment about wherever you go you hear bagpipes, reminded me of Jon Cleese, what did Sir expect to hear in Scotland a Colliery Brass Band perhaps. Well done for as we say stating the blooming obvious 😊
Before Edinburgh became Disneyland on a chill wind, the only time you heard bagpipes in Edinburgh was during the tattoo, now its during the tatty see you Jimmy 365 days
I live in Basel and when I go to visit family in Newcastle I fly to Edinburgh. Its is expensive for Hotels, more expensive than London. I often stay overnight but slightly out of town Haymarket area. Still on the tramand bus route to airport and 10 to 15 minute walk to Waverley. I when them in Edinburgh tend to get out of it. Go to South Queensferry and see the Fourth bridges, have a walk up to Arthur's Seat or down Lieth Walk to Lieth.
Where are the other three?
We were SHOUTING AT THE TELLY about the fish & chips ("don't go in, don't do it!") 😮. Hells bells and bacon burgers! 😢 Marvellous video with real passion 👍.
Yes, we do the same! lol Trouble is when your tired, and in a strange town or City, your vulnerable. We were on the edge of our seats when he mentioned hostel. Absolutely fine, if your back packing with others etc., no problem, brilliant! However, if you haven’t had any sleep, you got to have your wits about you!
@@shirleymclean5895 It was the best we had in the UK and as a pescatarian we eat a lot of fish and chips. The scallops in Islay were only thing better.
I bloody hate a bill with service charge ! £20 odd quid for fish chips and runny mushy peas . That’s tourist areas for you ! Very bloody sad. I understand they have overheads BUT cut your prices and you’ll get more people in! Nuff said .
Love the vlogs James 👍
Hi James This was a great idea not knowing where you were going and really like the idea of Europe trains I thinky the mix of Van life and trains etc is good
I just got back from Benidorm loved it a took some of your advise.
Cheers
Hi James for fish + chips stick to Yorkshire with beef dripping that train has many reports about lack of sleep from passengers sadly the only time i get grumpy is when shattered too so i know the feeling.
That call from Helibobs right cheered you up 😂😂😂🥰
Don't blame you for cutting it short, i hate missing sleep. Hope you have a good rest buddy.
Great content even when you are knackered!
I had my own room on that train and never slept a wink , I feel your pain
One trip, the heating was broken, tropical temperatures in the height of Summer, for the entire journey!!!! Staff are always really nice though.
That "!pretty" bit was, I think, Harry Potteerish, James 😊
and don't start doubting yourself, you numpty! we're enjoying it!😊
you done well james great vlog
Thank you
Find a library and a swimming baths. Add that to your missions if it’s like this. Just an idea.
Great vlog James I don’t blame you for heading home can’t wait for the Cromer Vlog a lovely little seaside town
Thank you mate, we're having a great day in Cromer
Beautiful & great crab
Don't worry about coming home a day early James it was still a great Vlog.😉
JAMES......Get a decent size Campervan. You can do the town tours % have sleep facilities at hand.
Don't class it as "vanlife" though, too many others doing that.
I'm currently touring France & Spain, but not YouTubing🙂
James, i would have gone home straight from London. Credit to you for trying something different but it's not the same when you're traveling about on your own. Have a pint, get on that train and don't fall asleep because of missing your stop!
Hi there yes Helen working to
Paying For your weekend mate
Nice vid james .you should of tried the Guildford Arms pub near waverly Station. Good selection of beers in there
Another great vlog, don't know how you did all that on one hours sleep. You definitely did the right thing going home, bet you cant wait to get in your van and you aren't letting anyone down 😊
James entertaining as always 👍
My home town woop woop hope you enjoyed.. you were 3 mins from my mates pub called the doctors pub if you just headed straight on you would have a nice pint from a guy named Daz from the doctors pub
Thanks James, get ya sen a good rest, have a chillout for a few days and do what you like best. All the best to you. 😊
Hiya James. Thanks for the recent video. Edinburgh is a lovely place. But like London the hotels screw you over. Why no try pop into lovely cities. Then escape to the quiet towns outside and get cheaper places to stay.
It's so wrong on the uk charges. I just booked 3 nights away for my wife and I for her birthday. And I booked 3 hotels All 4 * with breakfast £25 a night
Enjoyed it all as usual. Great idea to let us choose & brave of you to do it… you must be knackered. Get yourself home… see you soon. Lucy xx
Good vlog mate , you put a lot of effort in for sure, I'm traveling up in the morning, kent to Edinburgh, heading for isle of arran for a few nights wild camping with my lad .
Got a cheap ish travelodge
Lovely video James, keep up the good work! 🇬🇧
I went 5 December and went to Christmas market. Lovely . ... but i did pay 239 a night at a central hotel 4 star . It is pricey ... but you could stay half hour away and travel back in . Worth visiting again . ... ❤❤
Awwa James hope your OK you will be OK my friend don't stress I know it's hard xxx❤❤❤
We stay outside Edinburg in east caulder, in a b&b very reasonable and very clean, then we use the park and ride, but the bus stops outside the b&b to the park and ride if you don't have a car.
I love your vids I love watching you and Helen not where you go you guys put a big smile on my face cheers nige
I really felt for you in this video, trying to handle Edinburgh's notorious hills and cobbles on next to no sleep - I think all those people who voted for you to go from Lincoln to London then from there to Edinburgh must be some kind of sadists !!! ... It was an interesting idea, but as you found out not terribly prectical and VERY expensive, but you must go back one day, properly prepared. I've been twice, both in Spring midweek but aven't had much luck either there. The first time G/F No:1 sprained her ankle on the first day walking from our BnB into the centre and I found out my uncle had died while we were in the castle (a rip off BTW - you did well to swerve that) and the second time G/F No:2 twisted her knee as far away from the car as you could get on our walk and it was VERY cold and rainy the whole time, at least you had decent looking weather ! I hope to go back on my own by train (when I've saved up!) and walk or bus it towards Leith, checking out Hibernian FC, the new Meadowbank Stadium and best of all walk up "Arthur's Seat" which Helen was trying to tell you to do, the views from there of the city are awesome as often seen on Scootish set drama shows on TV like "Guilt" & "Annika" ... Hope you have recovered now, keep on doing what you do, we all love it !
Thank you Neil, I am sorry to hear about your uncles passing. I am going to go back with Helen and have a proper look around.
@@bythecurb I am over it now - that was back in 2002 !! Also I forgot to mention you must try haggis, it is really rather tasty. There are several places to try it (obviously!) but we found The Arcade Haggis & Whisky House on Cockburn Street, just off the Royal Mile, they serve it in various ways, lovely cosy little place. I even bought one from Tesco last year and cooked it for Burns Night, wasn't too bad at all ! 😆
Do what us poor people in Glasgow do and visit in winter, cheaper hotels , not so many tourists, one for Helen and you. Good luck.
Really enjoyed this content as we do all your vlogs. Have a good rest and just do whatever type of vlog you choose, they are all great
Thank you 😊❤️
I'm bloody knackered just watching these videos. Take yourself back home and get some rest. Bagpipes......what a fecking noise!! Great stuff as always, take care x
The away days didn't really work I'm surprised a long journey on a train no panoramic scenery stills or moving footage. Unless it was in total darkness all the journey.
Always enjoy whatever you are up to James.. Edinburgh looks nice 👍🙏
Thank you Kenny
That was great james just going to watch your visit to London now
I really enjoyed the past three uploads dude, its brave to be putting polls to the people and going off on a whim. Its positive stuff . I don't understand the negative comments towards you mate, it seems as though some have missed the point. Take care James, in a bit.
Thank you mate 😊
Brave?
Don't be hard on yourself James,I enjoy all your vlogs 😊
Enjoyed you vlogs over all james you worked hard on them mate and did a brilliant job "thanks".
You did your best to put in some content on this one for us mate and i for one enjoyed it , you looked tired and not at your best. Get youself home
See your daughter , and helen of course get mind and body rested and come back rejuvenated .
See the rejuvenated happy go lucky james in the next one😂
Thank you, I'm back on it now 😂
Caledonian waker haha, that did make spit my coffee out. Keep up the great videos.
I think James was tired today, whinging about prices all the time reminds me of myself 😂
It's normal to whinge about prices if you live in UK cos most of us aren't paid enough for the kinds of price tags on everything. Although a better way is just to avoid buying.
Hi Helen what a shame you are working Helen are bless he's missing you ,I don't know how you do it in your own James Edinburgh looks nice but expensive ,we was thinking about doing Christmas market this year and staying in Travelodge for a couple of days loved the vlog Ange
Thank you Ange. I'm back with Hellibobs now 😊
Love your content James always a good video 👍
I ALWAYS SAY TO ANYONE GOING TO EDINBURGH IS TAKE PLENTY OF MONEY BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED IT, EVERYTHING IS SO EXPENSIVE PUBS, PARKING, AND HOTELS ETC.
Loved the concept of travelling adhoc to different places but it must have been so exhausting for you James! Was quite worried about you by the end. Saying that, the vlogs were fab and really enjoyed them! All of the cities looked well worth visiting 😊 Hope you are now feeling well again tho! Look after yourself xxx
It was a bit, I didn't enjoy making these as much as I should have!
Should have crossed the bridge and got a bnb in Rosyth or nearby. Hell of lot cheaper and only 20 minutes from the City. Added bonus, get to film all 3 bridges.
you could've caught a half-hour train to somewhere like Stirling and got a hotel room for 70 quid. There's a castle there and then an easy start to the Inverness journey
But no research was done at all. I just watched this video and I know people including himself were saying he's trying to be spontaneous. But all I kept thinking while watching it was hasn't he checked anything out before hand. Could have booked an underground tour of the vaults or Mary King's Close. Went to the National Museum Of Scotland for free could spend a few hours in that place. Should have took a walk up Calton Hill for great views over the city. Could have stayed in Falkirk for a night found a cheaper hotel there. Falkirk is easily accessible by frequent trains there. In Falkirk your smack bang in the middle between Glasgow and Edinburgh. And the bonus is you stay in Falkirk you've got an opportunity to see the Kelpies. But that's the sort of info you go armed with if you do some homework first.
Hi, really like your vids. I think you were looking for buskers to have a look at? Try Liverpool in about a month onwards, for me. Electric guitarist with crazy hair, playing blues and Paul Weller and Queen ;) in town centre. There's a few good people around too.
Loved this vlog, your confidence has shot up....Keep it up your fab.x
All your videos are really interesting James. You could visit the same place many times and they are all going to be different according to your mood, the weather and the people you encounter. Thank God it's like that or other Vloggers might as well not bother going to the places youv'e been :) I noticed Helen got you a DNA kit for Christmas and you love History. If your ever stuck for ideas how about visiting some of the towns your Grandparents and further back came from and delve into the jobs they did. A sort of 'Who do you Think You Are' thing.
Keep making wonderful videos both.
Good idea. My dad has done our family tree and we have some really interesting stories
Whats happend to your van James ? how come your going by train everywhere?
I'm back in the van now, just wanted to mix things up a bit
The stadium is for the Edinburgh Tattoo. Happens every summer
Home of the deep fried mars bar, what did you expect James? That first monument you looked at musta bin modelled on Thunderbird 3.
Bertie's is a massive trap for tourists who want to try fish and chips but don't know where else to go. All your Americans and other tourists are on Victoria Street for their Instagram photos, they see the big red white and blue neon sign and they're sold. They won't bat an eyelid at paying £30 for a mediocre fish supper and some tinned mushy peas because they don't know any better. There are numerous chippies around the city who will do a much better fish supper with a can of Irn Bru - which is how it should be done - for around a tenner.
Great video as always my man, should take a trip to Portsmouth or the Isle of Wight i think you'll enjoy it down here
