During our visit to the Bentley factory in Crewe, Phil got the chance to sample the grand tourer that cost four times the typical house in the 1950s, the incredible R-Type Continental! Styled by H.J. Mulliner and revised in a wind tunnel with stablising fins sculpted into the rear end, the R-Type Continental was the fastest four-seater car in the world at the time, good for over 120MPH! With just 207 ever produced, it’s small wonder an R-Type Continental is worth big bucks these days - an example sold at Barons Auctions for over £700,000 ($1 million!) in 2015!

What a beautiful car. Imposing elegance from a time when Bentleys were reassuringly rare. And that view down the bonnet is something else. Simply wonderful 👌

A beautiful car from the halcyon days of British Engineering, They would never have imagined the company eventually falling into German hands. Lucky Phil.

The R Type (and the R Type Continental) were not the last to be available with a manual gearbox. The option continued into the ‘S’ Series, but was quickly withdrawn with only a handful being built.

Absolutely wonderful car! One of the things to take out of this is the advantage of higher aspect tires. When will this craziness and obsession with low profile tires end? 65 ratio tires instead of the silly 35-45 would give us all a much more comfortable life for zero expense. Greetings from Denmark

Not the last of manual cars - a few S-Type Continentals were fitted with manual 'boxes, as was, I believe, one Silver Cloud.

Apologies for contradiction but I do believe that in the case of the car that followed the ‘R’, namely the Bentley S1 Continental Fastback, there were 12 manuals built. TR

A great car, allways prefered the s1 to 3 tho or better still the rolls royce versions.such a shame the companys both got split a part and are now owned by my 2 most hated brands.will stick with my proper rolls royce,a spirit.good review tho.

Is the distributor out one gear tooth, it does not look correct from what I can tell from the video ? It could be just the angle that the camera is it, but it still looks "out".

Did James Bond, drive one of these, in the original Ian Flemming book?

James Bond drove a Bentley 4.5 litre with an Amherst Villiers Supercharger in Casino Royale, his first appearance. It was stated as a 1930 car in the second book 'Live and Let Die' but as a 1933 model in its third and last appearance in Moonraker.

@@hondamonkeyboy thank you sir....As far, as I have read, he bought it in 1933 ....later he crashed it , and got a Bentley mk4 , which I accidently remembered as a 1953 😲
