Hi Morten, noticed another comment saying that not many tool batteries have balancers..... Have personally taken apart hundreds and found that in the last 2 years more and more are coming out with no balancers. I have an almost identical bosch 36v with balance, but it's a couple of years old. The cynic in me says this is all to do with manufacturers trying to increase profits. After all there is no way the battery without balance can last as long as the one with. Great videos.
Hi benjamin hayes Thank You very much! Totally possible,, or to give the manufacturer's a little credit, Maybe it's not as necessary anymore, maybe there is more errors on the balances cricket then on the batteries,, maybe the cells then self includes some safety kill switch. Thank you for watching! :-)
Yes, I’ve opened up an 18v battery and again no balancer, serious omission as this is a serious safety issue. Great to see I’m not the only one to notice this.
You're right about the lack of balancing function on this battery. This is very odd because when some cells will get out of balance, this will overcharge some of them. Very dangerous as far as lithium is concerned... I have no clue why a "reputable" manufacturer such as Bosch does that, a fire incident could damage their reputation
If you use a little more time on sourcing and testing cells, securing conformity between cells, then you dont need a BMS. Check up Garcias videos, he says the same with big packs. He ran a bus on a battery pack without BMS. Also they put a termo sensor cutting out if the batteries should overheat
Mine (36V 6Ah) wouldnt charge because it was completely flat and the charger thought it was faulty. I had another battery for my strimmer (36V, 2AH) and "jump started" the flat one from the charged one for a few seconds (+ to +, - to -) and that was enough for the charger to realise it wasnt faulty and battery is as good as new now.
Yeah I never expected that. Why does this happen, what does this "indication" button have to do with the battery being able to provide power to the tool? I have a bosch tool with same issue, battery charged 40v and button not working, now I know what's wrong but I still dont get it
I love watching folks who do this - Good Work, Morten ! I have a similar battery, but mine is working well - has done since I bought it back in summer '17 - lucky me :-)
No balancing on most tool batteries, unfortunately. I've taken apart Bosch, Makita, Dewalt and Milwaukee and found nothing in most of them. The newest versions of Makita seems to have it, though.
Check the battery PCB in more detail and you will see a fuse you can take out to give you safe isolation from the risk of a full battery short circuit.
What is the middle pin for? Is it for the temperature sensor? I made a custom battery for my "easy rotak 36-550" machine and i connected only the + and - from the battery, no middle pin. The machine it starts for 3 seconds, that stop.
I have seen a lot of batterys of powertool and bosch has no balancing. I have seen so a lot of broken one because they just get debalanced. Their are certain batteries which tend to do it more than others. The older bosch 18v batteries especially the 4 and 6 ah ones use Samsung cells which are more of a problem than the 5ah once which habe LG cells. They even state that they match the batteries so there is no need for balancing. If I'm honest they could get longer life out of the cells if they would balance them but I guess it is just like a oilchange on a car. That's were they make the most of the money. On the same time you get makita batteries and they are balancing the battery pack but put a kill switch on there which counts the cycles and then kills the bms. You'll find a lot of videos on that topic. You can actually rather not balance them and balance them manually like I did with my battery packs and just do it once in a while and you get plenty more life out of them. At least that is what I do with bosch batteries 😊
Good Job. Was Worried when you removed the switch without being able to disconnect the power. To help protect you, I unplugged my computer just in case....So, how did the battery project work out? ⚡🤣😋😀😀
From what I've seen when examining my own battery, the tool (drill/mower/etc) uses the centre battery connector as a parasitic 1wire interface and queries the battery for info such as pack voltage (18/36v) and temperature. If the battery doesn't respond, the tool will refuse to power up, or will work for 1 second and then die. It's a combination of safety protocols and presumably DRM in a failed attempt to thwart aftermarket clones. I'm guessing that the BMS had previously registered some sort of fault and entered a lockdown mode for safety. Some sites report that holding the status button down for ten seconds will perform a factory reset on a Bosch BMS, so perhaps that inadvertently happened whilst the switch was being replaced (I got the impression the bit of the video that was cut out at 9:10 involved an epic desoldering struggle which likely bridged the switch contacts). At some point I'm planning to hook up a logic analyser and decoder to see what's going on. I was surprised to find practically no info about it online. Bosch do provide industrial BMS systems, so perhaps there will be datasheets available for those that reveal some of their consumer device secrets 😁 Anyhow, it was a very useful and informative video, even if the root cause wasn't identified. Nice one Morten 👍👍
The charger can probably see, that some of the cells are way out of balances,, take it a part and check it with a volt meter. and charge up the low cell(s) (never charge li-ion with more than 4.2 volt)
@@MyPlayHouse thanks. Is there a way to charge it without pulling it fully apart? I tried linking a fully charge battery and that didn’t do anything. What does the spring in the middle do?

Hi I am getting a rapid blinking green light when pressing the battery status button, and the battery goes red on the charger when it is slid into the charger itself. What can be wrong? Thanks.
I fixed this battery for someone else,, so I do not have it anymore.. But I would take it apart, measure the overall voltages,, if that is okay, I would mesure the voltages on each cell,, to see if anything it to low. Best if they are all with in 0,1 volt of each other. If one or more is to low,, you need to charge that up a little,, if to high,, draine it a little,, using a little load,, 6volt motor, or 6volt light bulb.
@@MyPlayHouse This would obviously require volt meters and other electronic tools to be able to charge and test as you say. I am sending this 32V 6Ah battery to Robert Bosch here in the UK in few days time, and I hope they do as you say and get it to take a charge again. The battery is just 28 months old, and I did not over charge or drain it for it get like this. It all went wrong when I mowed my lawn and the mower kept losing and regaining power until the battery completely died yesterday. I mow my lawn at least 20 times over a 30 week period of time .
@MyPlayHouse I received a new 36V 6Ah lithium ion battery 5 days ago and mowed my lawm without any charging issues prior to the mow. However, the battery only has a 6-month limited warranty. We'll see how it goes.

He is right. They spot weld the cables to the busbar. If you want to take it of use some cable cutters and lever them of. Just do it on the negative side, way less risk of short circuit when soldering back on the busbar.
