Talk about hours spent on this one. I played it so much I discovered that the robot's lasers will pass harmlessly through the player if they go through the space between his head and body.
I had spent many hours playing on my Atari 2600 . This was one of the games that was so satisfying to play. Thanks for taking me back to that period of my Childhood that never will be forgotten ❤
Fun (also sad) fact: In 1982, 18-year-old straight-A high school student Peter Bukowski and his friend walked into an arcade in Calumet City, IL. Peter put a quarter into the machine for this game. Within 30 minutes, Peter received the high score, entering his initials into the leaderboard. However, that was the end of it, as Peter was about to start playing the next game when he instantly dropped dead of a heart attack. It was examined by the coroner that Peter had two-week-old scar tissue around his heart, and the excitement and stress of playing caused his heart to get much weaker, so weak it stopped. Peter had his whole life ahead of him, so it was just a sad, sad thing it happened too soon.
Fun fact, the sound when the enemy is shooting was used in regular show season 1 episode 4 “death punchies” at the end of the episode and they are also playing on an Atari
This is the PAL version. Anyway, Berzerk is one of my favorite Atari games of all time. I love as the score goes higher, the robots' laser sound goes faster. That shooter game was ahead of its time, same goes with its awesome box art. So much fun.
I had a 2600 and my parents purchased it with this game. I was about 7 years old so it was the best graphics I’ve ever seen, played this thing for hours and hours every day!
1:06 That's weird: That robot died before the bullet even got there! This is actually one of the best coin-op conversions ever done for the Atari VCS, in my opinion.
XD could you imagine the amount of people thinking, "I never saw this in the anime!", only to later on realize that this has literally nothing to do with the anime?
@@ChristopherSobieniakI had no idea you could opt out. My brother and I inherited our 2600, and the games we got with it were loose and didn't have the manuals. We always called it 'the ghost' 😂
Few memories come to mind for me... 1. I would have so there was one robot left, and have it just chasing me around the stage. 2. The smiley face that could not destroy scared me as a kid because knew it was it was a matter of time before it showed up and I had to leave the map. 3. The box/cartridge art was pretty bad ass. Your character destroying a robot, but two others looming in the background.
btw, someone did take the obvious idea of making a game like this but with an actual map where you have to go to certain places and do certain things to win, it's called Shamus.
¡Excelente video, y saludos!

Anyone know if the story about the two young men who played this game in the arcades in the early 1980's and died is true? I can't seem to find any articles from that time.
I think it was caused by not being used to this new kind of activity, and were unable to handle this excitement. Video Games weren't common during the early 80's, like they are now.
Loved playing Atari 2600 games in the 80's! Much more fun than games of today. They were more simple, but the sound effects were cool, even the look of the cartridge was fucking awesome! You'd get excited looking at it, knowing it would be great when you started playing it. That inspiration and excited feeling has gone now. I wish I could bring back the 80's.
Are there some graphics of the bullets missing due to youtube compression etc? It seems like there's several times the LPer shoots at a wall and a few seconds later an enemy somewhere else onscreen dies, like a bullet was bouncing off the walls.
Yeah, that was the first thing I noticed so 👎 since I'd like to see someone play better than me. Then they played it on a variation with extra lives. I try to beat my score on the variation with none. So far I didn't see a neck shot, which can be done, but I'm not good enough. I was hoping when he went laser-to-laser against an enemy 9:04 that he'd drop down 1 pixel to let the bolt go through him, but instead the enemy finally moved and got him! LOL. One of the things I learned about Berzerk was they programmed it so that no two enemies were on the same horizontal lines. That way they could avoid the blinking that Pac-Man's ghosts got, as well as in Superman and Adventure. Activision's Stampede was similar but they somehow could put multiple cattle on the same horizontal, perhaps because they were identical.
Evil Otto is in this version. The player is either screen hopping too fast before Otto appears or they're playing a different game mode. The 2600 has 12 or more modes.
There's two glitches in the game. It's most likely the second glitch. The first one, is if you earn too many lives. You have to hit around the 100k mark for that to happen, as you earn an extra life every 1000 points. 50 lives isn't enough to trigger it. It's most likely the second "glitch." The game has an in game timer, that if you stand still for a certain amount of time, the game resets into a demo mode. This is checked specifically at the end of every cycle. Roughly, 4 1/4 seconds, starting when the maze closes, and before you start the game. So if you start the game 10 seconds after you turn on the console, you're already down two counters. This counter does not reset when you move again, and firing a laser does not count as moving. So if you're in a laser battle standing still, it still counts as not moving.
Loved this as a kid. The robots terrified me for some reason! I remember imagining my school was infested with them and I was the hero who destroyed them all and saved everyone! 😂
It's really your own fault if you die in this game. I remember playing for hours without ever shooting, just letting the robots run into walls and shoot each other. Dumbest enemies of any Atari game.
Talk about hours spent on this one. I played it so much I discovered that the robot's lasers will pass harmlessly through the player if they go through the space between his head and body.
I spent so much time with this my hands would turn black and sweaty from the controller.
yeah did that one.
Yeah, but that's hard to do.
the player has no neck so no need to worry about getting choked
"Vyvyan, you complete and utter BASTARD!!"
after 40+ years I suddenly had the desire to hear the BERZERK sounds, I am not disappointed
Try Pitfall or Moon Patrol...
UM, the actual REAL 25 cent ARCADE version ???
Or this imitation ATARI 2600 version ????
I wear a Berzerk tshirt right now. I loved the sounds as a child and still today. Also got the desire to hear them, great sounds..

I agree. Also Yars' Revenge I find relaxing and you can get in the zone.
Yars' Revenge is one of the first games I ever played.
It took me ages to figure it out, lol.
I still think it is.
It's actually one of my favorite Atari 2600 games, to be honest. I honestly find myself really vibing while playing this.

I love how stupid the enemies are. The first thing they do instead of shooting at you isThey run into walls and die lol
The most easiest enemy to kill.
And you still get awarded points when they kill themselves, or each other.

the manga is peak

Its only on hard level this noob is only playing easy level.
Does anyone else see a smiley face every time one of those robots explode?

Too bad the player isn't playing this with the "Evil Otto" option however. I think that was a setting on the console you had to press to do so.
