I admit I love hunkering down and watching Joe do his thing, but like a new car or maybe an invite to go camping with Joe might be better, not by much but better.
Hey Joe. Just wanted to say I appreciate all the effort you put into these videos. Camera work is great, feels like I'm right there cutting the wood with you! Take care and keep up the awesome work!
Runs with Horses he is wasting a valuable resource though. His daughter. They make excellent camera persons. As I always tell mine, if I wanted to hold a camera myself I wouldn't have had you. The downside is they like to do close up's on your nose
captain fragger Do you realize how shaky a child would be compared to the tripod he uses? Spends plenty of time with his family. In fact, all the time except when he’s camping. Get out of here.
Joe you truly are a legend man I hope you get better so you can get more out and make more videos for us! You are one of the best influences out there!
Anyone else see the lil inchworm trying to fight off joes blackflies at 44:00? It’s just like “ I’ll save you joe! I’m not like those other bugs! Hya, hya!” And just beating away those flies from his hoodie
It's Friday, I got off work early, and I get home to a JR video that's a little over an hour... things are good! Thanks Joe! Glad you take time off, it's good for you and the famdamly!
I'm watching this while I'm in my hammock setup on the back of our 60 acres. This is my first time in a hammock. Great videos you are very informative!
Joe I'm watching your solo bushcraft overnight in my semi permanent bush shelter, fire inside, building the front wall In youtube right now I love the way you make a shelter logs so firm and simply beautiful. Tc gbu your fan from the 🇵🇭 Philippines
Awww! The wee inch worm friend on your hood brings back childhood memories! Cute little fellas! My sister and I used to catch them and have inch worm races before we set them free!
Damn, the sounds of the flies and you mentioning them was enough to make my skin crawl. Like, I'm watching a youtube video, but it still FEELS like they're crawling on me.
With the exception of trailer park boys, kids in the hall, and your channel... Kenny vs spenny is the greatest thing to ever come out of Canada. Waiting for a Netflix reboot or something
OMG those black flies are unreal! That clip of you in the woods chopping and you took a second it was like an exorcism. Note to self always bring something for bugs. Black on Black on Black flies damn. Thank you for this! May God bless you, your loved ones and every fortunate enough to see this video. 🙏
You should look into a wireless microphone for your camera. That way you can be heard when farther away from the camera without the major shift in volume. You can get a cheap one on amazon for $30 or a more expensive one for around $100. It would help you out alot.
I got a better idea. Use a voice over afterwards only have your daughter read what you said so it will be you talking in her voice. That would be awesome
Hi Joe, I just wanted to throw this out there I know because being a girl with 4 Brothers we did a lot of bushcraft things when we were a lot younger, yes mosquitoes and blackflies, we always kept deep woods off, or something like it, I know, I know, however. Planted mint for other bugs and snakes don’t like mint and it comes back every year, now that I’m 70 and two of the Brothers have passed , and two in wheelchairs, we don’t do any chopping or waking up to the woods anymore but we did a lot , then all of us and our children and now grandchildren are taking over our forts,,, lol. God bless we been watching you for a few years, my husband really enjoys your videos, so much fun.. and by the way … it’s Mike and Me
Thank you for sharing this video! I wasn't planning on bringing bug spray this past weekend on my very first solo hiking/kayaking/camping trip up north until I saw this video. The black flies were relentless. A bite near my eye even made it close half way! ;/ Still the BEST experience ever. Also Thank you so much for recommending a MORAKNIV as a starter knife. BAM SON!!! :D
Just wanted you to know Joe. I really enjoy your channel and appreciate the extra work you go through to give us content. One of my favorite outdoorsman!!!!
Love the videos, And the outdoors sure is nice to see. Looks peaceful and serine. Seeing all those bugs flying around made me inch my own skin. That is one thing that the outdoors could live without lol.
Kenny vs spenny is amazing. I still go back and watch them on TH-cam. I hate how it didn't do well here in the states. Also love tpb. Joe your the man. I'll always love your badass references.
Good dose of 'Bushcraft Reality' in this one! We have had enough trouble with black flies in our Adirondack and northern Appalachian Trail trips. One thing about them amazed me: when I used a tent with a floor and fine mesh screening, all the flies inside quit paying attention to me as soon as I zipped it up and began looking for a way out! I could crush them against the mesh but they never left the fabric to visit me. In the Classic Camping Era, Nessmuk had plenty of things to say about black flies--none of them complementary! Ain't no 'big baby' about being bothered by black flies! My wife and I suffered from the allergic reaction for weeks afterward. Crappies are about my favorite panfish! Mild, sweet flavor; never 'grassy' like some bass I used to catch in Arkansas. Hope to see you 'catch and cook'' some of those!
James Ellsworth I've had issues with them in the Adirondacks as well. Got some doggy bug spray for my pup to add on to her spot on tick killer. It was some sort of natural stuffs with eucalyptus and citrus. It worked decently to keep the black flies off me, and helped keep the ticks and mosquitos off the dog.
Joe I have watched many of your videos and really enjoy them. You imply at 34/35 life is harder than a few years ago. Matter of fact I am a little jealous. I am looking at 69yrs in a couple of months. Don't wimp out in your mid 30s. What takes you an hour to do takes me an entire day. I have 4 grandsons the oldest just turned 8 and the youngest 4. We get out in the woods but "making"a lean to shelter is much more than "building" a lean to. They enjoy your videos. Me too. Hang in there.
For the allergic reaction, in our med kit we keep the liquid Benadryl capsules. I was stung by a bee once and had a reaction. We were able to cut the capsule open and apply it directly to the reaction, worked great. Might help.
Re: Gut problems--Did you get tested for giardia, which is a protozoan that can act up in cycles and it can be contracted from drinking water from streams, lakes and ponds? Just a thought. And---That's not a sweater--It's a hoodie.
Hi from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦. We don’t call them sweaters or hoodies. Back in the day we called them bunny hugs. Enjoy your videos. Miss Scout. It’s no fun when part of your family is not well. You take good care of yourself too. Black flies suck! No pun intended
Alexis Perkins basically its soft wood to get it going, and hard wood for heat output. You can easily determine a type of tree by its leaves/pines or by the bark kn the tree
Super cool video. As for the black fries try mixing peppermint oil with plain old Vaseline and rub all over especially on your face. It will keep the black flies from biteing you.
That is some really hard as wood !!! The axe all most bounced off the wood . Great fire wood iii. Like always thanks again Joe for another award winning video !!!
Looking forward to the first of your mini series of your latest trip Joe , Instagram pics have me buzzing, keep checking my notifications although I know it won't be up before Friday 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Joe, Just a hint. One of the B vitamins is a natural internal bug repellent so I make a point of taking my B vitamins before gardening, and i don't get bitten even when others are complaining around me. a few in your pack is easily fit in. Am enjoying your videos!
sure does loo like fun . I used to go to Pembroke Ontario . play in the Hudson river . even did a two day white water trip class 4 and 5 wave . great fishing on the Hudson . even got to fish with some bears at a water falls . course they were on the other side of the water falls tho . as a younger man I used to do trips close to yours but not quite as ruff as you and your friends do . its great to see some are still out there kicking it up . at 66 and heart problems I can't do it any more ... but love watching your videos , brings back old memories . hope you and ya buds keep doing this . it's a part of life most don't get to do or see . but maybe watching you on here will awaken that true frontier sprit in others . keep doing what you do ... we are watching and loving it . a big fan Dennis Werley Pennsylvania USA
Man, thanks so much for documenting and sharing this video!! Can't watch it in entirety right now but...hope your health is better. Your living the right way if you continue with this lifestyle, Joe. Cheers man! All the best!!
Josh Seviour Joe’s in Ontario, Canada, TA (I wanna day David?) is in England. I mean I know they’re both popular and probably make a decent amount of money off TH-cam, but that’s a pricey trip
Tommi Lintala not friendly. Youd have to look back at a few of Joes vids. One where he was at Shawns cabin and the other just before or just after that, where there were comments made implying some issues.
Ian Welburn hi. I heard Avon Skin so soft works on those little buggers! Maybe Tee tree oil would help. Keep those videos coming. Used to love being in the outdoors. I’m disabled now so you bring back many happy memories.
A tip of advice is to bring a empty can and cut the top and put a Smokey fire when there is no wind when you are on the a lake to keep away the black fly swarm hope it works for you
I love all of the effort and time and energy that is ALWAYS put into all of your videos. You literally go the extra mile (or kilometer) to get all of those angles and clips. I know that I appreciate it, and that a lot of other people probably do too. I enjoy the videos very much. Thank you, and please keep up the great work. Best of wishes your way, sincerely, Andrew B.
In my opinion, the Council Tool Woodcraft axe is probably the best axe to have while backpacking and processing wood. I have somewhat of a soft spot in my heart with mine. Good choice Joe!
A friend of mine makes those wax sticks him self for his own use. He just gets a couple of packs of candles cheaper the better (just for the sake of your wallet) makes a bunch of baton peices of wood roughly same size as the one in video. He then melts the candles in something long and square as fit the wood batons. So melt candles remove wicks fill up with batons and simmer until you think the wood has soaked as much of the wax as possible. He usually does batches of round 8 - 12 so you know your good to go for a while. Cheers Rob, new subscriber from New Zealand, love the channel!!! Cheers
Jedi Joe's Bed & Breakfast Smokehouse! I was given a shirt that was treated with permethrin (ex officio I think) and I'm a believer. Treat your clothes in early spring and it lasts at least one full season. Rarely if ever do I need additional insect repellent or a head net.
Lazlo Hollyfeld , it does withstand several Washington. I'm sure it degrades its effectiveness, but it should definitely get you through August if you treated in May (Depending on your detergent and how many washes they go through). I can't give you quantitative data, but it seems to me that natural fibers hold on to it better than synthetic, but I wouldn't say the difference is very much. It doesn't eat synthetics like DEET either, which is nice. I treat my Clark hammock and mosquito netting for example as well as under armor type shirts and shorts, and they do not lose stretch or feel brittle.
Permethrin is not approved for human (civilian) use in Canada, unfortunately. You can get very dilute formulations from vets and livestock suppliers, but the high percentage you need to treat clothing is hard to come by. Our military treats uniforms with it for those that are deploying to areas where insects are problematic, but it's hard to get into civilian hands. You'd have to smuggle it in from the US.
I rub them on my skin and put them under my hat and sometimes hanging out of my socks when I'm at the cow dairy. It sounds crazy but works well they still fly around you but hardly land on you.
Hey man, enjoying your videos from Newcastle, England. I'm big into my trad archery and thought i might recommend that you try out a bare bow for yourself. could make for some interesting footage. Keep up the great work man!
I cut right through my mask on my GB small forest ax two months ago. I ordered a kydex one which just got shipped. I'm glad you actually pointed that out because I was surprised when I did it. Great video as always.
HAPPY almost 34th BIRTHDAY, Joe " : ) You're still young... We all go through changes... You're probably spending that reserve energy on your family and these videos ... both very worthwhile... (family first of course)
Thank you for converting the temp for us people in the states! I’m always wondering what the temp is like for you! Great vid keep coming back to this spot! Amazing job on the shelter!
Hey Joe. Love your videos. try to watch everyone. Keep up the good work bringing us the footage of your outings. I'm kind of envious because I've never had the opportunity to camp out in a snowy wilderness. So thanks for bringing it closer to us. Just one thing that bugged me a little in this video though, and I'm not sure if someone else has commented about it, but about those delicious sausages you cooked up for dinner...... well.... that's not what a sausage looks like sorry to say. Sausages by definition, are long elongated tubes of ground meat encased in a casing that is usually the small intestine of a lamb or piglet. What you were cooking were patties. Call them burger patties, ground meat patties, meat cakes, or whatever you wish to call them, but definitely not sausages. Cause they ain't........lol
FUN vid, Joe! Loved it. By the way, if you think that your body is changing at 34, wait until you are in your 50's. I really started noticing a difference at about 45, but I started exercising more to kind of compensate...so that sort of slowed the deterioration a little, but then I had some gut issues. Now that I'm in my 50's, I'm feeling like a mere shadow of what I once was. Enjoy the 30s while they last. They go by so very, very fast.
Youʻve come a long way Joe, and yes its weird seeing you with out SCOUT everybody’s favorite TH-cam dog. To many more journey’s🍻. ML&Aloha Your boy Kekoa. “Rest in love Scout”⛩🌙✨

You should put a Game Camera up on your shelter in between visits. See what kind of wildlife visit the shelter.
I totally agree
or a wildlife camera on a tree.
Allen Mccoy that’s what a Game camera is 😂
Hello
Just to think of how many times he has to walk back and forth for the camera😂 props to you buddy

The progression of your shooting and editing abilities is pretty amazing to watch over the years

Two suggestions: Benadryl cream & Benadryl tabs for your spring time trips, just in case
use 3- 2 pints of vodka you wont feel a thing...
Allen Mccoy On you or in you?
Awww! The wee inch worm friend on your hood brings back childhood memories! Cute little fellas! My sister and I used to catch them and have inch worm races before we set them free!

Joe’s back...BAM SON!
You should look into a wireless microphone for your camera. That way you can be heard when farther away from the camera without the major shift in volume. You can get a cheap one on amazon for $30 or a more expensive one for around $100. It would help you out alot.
They cut out when ya bump them tho. I use them some. Started using a mic with a 20 ft cord whenever I could instead.
I got a better idea. Use a voice over afterwards only have your daughter read what you said so it will be you talking in her voice. That would be awesome
Benadryl tabs or caps for serious bites/stings and Benadryl cream for topical relief. You can use both at the same time. Relief for sure...

LOL...u r right mate :)
Hey Joe, can you dedicate a video to talking about how to identify different types of trees and how good that type of wood is for burning?
Alexis Perkins basically its soft wood to get it going, and hard wood for heat output. You can easily determine a type of tree by its leaves/pines or by the bark kn the tree
I'v seen your patch many times, I tell you Joe, I like it even more. It's simple clean and not cluttered. Good job. Wish I could afford one.
Yaaaay , It's Friday. Joe video day!!!!
Super cool video. As for the black fries try mixing peppermint oil with plain old Vaseline and rub all over especially on your face. It will keep the black flies from biteing you.
Myrtle Syd And the bears will love you for desert.
My stuff. I will think of something to keep the bears away when you start to complain about the bears
Lol
Those bumps on your head are just your antlers coming in. They will be a bit sore to start with but that will go away soon.
Doctor Phil 😒

Kenny vs spenny iz really on of the best canadian old School shows!!!!

Hi Joe, Just a hint. One of the B vitamins is a natural internal bug repellent so I make a point of taking my B vitamins before gardening, and i don't get bitten even when others are complaining around me. a few in your pack is easily fit in. Am enjoying your videos!

Canadian Egg-Scursions really? I didn’t know this. Why’s that the case?
Thebluebridgetroll not entirely sure. It became evident a few months back over the course of a few vids where there were some comments made.
Tommi Lintala not friendly. Youd have to look back at a few of Joes vids. One where he was at Shawns cabin and the other just before or just after that, where there were comments made implying some issues.
Citronella and Jojoba oil will keep the flies off - Avon "skin so soft"
Ian Welburn hi. I heard Avon Skin so soft works on those little buggers! Maybe Tee tree oil would help.
Keep those videos coming. Used to love being in the outdoors. I’m disabled now so you bring back many happy memories.

"That guy there, she dead..." lmfaooooooo

Jedi Joe's Bed & Breakfast Smokehouse! I was given a shirt that was treated with permethrin (ex officio I think) and I'm a believer. Treat your clothes in early spring and it lasts at least one full season. Rarely if ever do I need additional insect repellent or a head net.
*bush Jedi joe
Thanks for the advice though
ReptilianRatto , Jedi Joebi wan Robinobi!
Hey Sean, curious, is it still effective after you wash it? I'm a heavey sweat guy so I need to be able to wash my clothes. Thanks!
Dryer sheets keep the flys off. Dont ask me why but it works.
Dirty ol Joe used or brand new and do you burn them or just keep them on your person?
Scott The DIYSelfer on ya person
I rub them on my skin and put them under my hat and sometimes hanging out of my socks when I'm at the cow dairy. It sounds crazy but works well they still fly around you but hardly land on you.
I learned it from an old-timer.
how do you use ?
Hey man, enjoying your videos from Newcastle, England. I'm big into my trad archery and thought i might recommend that you try out a bare bow for yourself. could make for some interesting footage. Keep up the great work man!
Joe, always excited for a good meal, is a great example for me!!!
I cut right through my mask on my GB small forest ax two months ago. I ordered a kydex one which just got shipped. I'm glad you actually pointed that out because I was surprised when I did it. Great video as always.
What? Where is my 10 minute segment of you preparing the juiciest steak that I'll never have?!
Maximus We want steak! Yeah. Joe has probably got to cut back on the beer though. Health over pleasure mostly.
Maximus he is trying to take it easy.. stomach problems.

So I asked this before watching the entire video......
HAPPY almost 34th BIRTHDAY, Joe " : )
You're still young...
Cause they ain't........lol
sausage patties lol
If you ever go to Scotland and ask for sausage, you will be asked..." Square or linked ? "
I wonder if one if your subs will find the shelter ?
White Oak Outdoors some one has it may not have been a sub some one did use it and made alterations he found it in one of his videos
It was you wasn't it?

Then send him an email saying he could be found if someone really wanted to?
Bring scout and build a little something for him and pls bring mike to this cite more!
You‘re videos let me enjoy nature even when I‘m not able to go outside
FUN vid, Joe! Loved it. By the way, if you think that your body is changing at 34, wait until you are in your 50's. I really started noticing a difference at about 45, but I started exercising more to kind of compensate...so that sort of slowed the deterioration a little, but then I had some gut issues. Now that I'm in my 50's, I'm feeling like a mere shadow of what I once was. Enjoy the 30s while they last. They go by so very, very fast.
"That guy there she dead" bwahaha hilarious
