Very likeable album. Their 80’s output with Schmoelling in the band is my favourite era for sure.

Well I’ll be damned… this might very well be my new favorite album of theirs to date. I swear it’s like they keep outdoing themselves for me and I don’t see any other projects of theirs topping this anytime soon, even if it’s only by the slightest of margins. Not only do I love the production and melodies on this one a whole lot, but also given all the tracks on here are shorter than usual, it’s really admirable how they are taking risks by making the music on this album be more accessible than what they would usually deliver up until this point, and those risks absolutely paid off for me. Network 23 is my favorite on this album and also probably my favorite track they’ve ever made, and that’s really saying something.
Excellent album! They truly knocked this one out of the park!!!

Wait until you hear the album "Underwater Sunlight" from 1986....in my opinion among their very best.

Tangerine Dream and PPG were a match made in heaven. Exit, White Eagle (yes, I saw your vid on it 😄), Poland, etc. are filled with beautiful wavetable goodness. My favorite TD era.

Totally agree- absolutely love this album & will never forget the first time I heard it! Solid and gorgeously textured - tight and concise!!! I spent many years prior to the internet trying to find other TD albums that evoked these sounds - Poland comes close but with longer tracks. Thanks for reviewing this great work!

Exit is my favourite Tangerine Dream for the same reasons you shared. It is easily their most catchy and iconic work.
I also really love Hyperborea but that has a very different vibe again.

My first TD album. As soon as Choronzon kicked in I knew I was hooked for life! The cover artwork also attracted me as well, it was a doorway to another realm.

Remote Viewing is featured in GTA 4 on The Journey radio

Was 13 years old when I first discovered TD. At such a young and impressionable age, you can imagine the experience when I first heard albums like Zeit, Phaedra, and certainly Exit. This album has such a vintage, authentic 80s sound encapsulating that period of time perfectly, with both a somewhat darker and serious tone fused together simultaneously with a more hopeful, optimistic vision of what the future could be in the then-new digital age. There's hints of somberness and danger thrown in too, probably making Exit one of TD's most expressive albums of their entire career. Its a top contender for me to this day. Kiew Mission, Pilots of Purple Twilight, Choronzon, and Exit are my favorites, but there isn't a bad track here honestly.

This was the first album of theirs that I bought on vinyl. Seeing that I hadn't heard anything form them before, I was immediately blown away by Kiew Mission. Easily one of the prettiest pieces of progressive electronic music from that period. Remote Viewing comes close as well. I just love the entire space/secret agent/espionage sound of it, almost as if Blade Runner got mixed with older 007 movies with some goofiness from Austin Powers thrown into the mix. Just stunning work all around, and it's also cool that you were able to connect with it as well.

Remote Viewing was probably the first Tangerine Dream track I ever heard, on the radio station "The Journey" which was like a new age station in GTA4. Also the first time hearing Jean-Michel Jarre there too. I see your point about synthwave. I actually love the genre, but even I have to admit its kind of pastichey and repetitive. Exit is a really great album, and I actually love the next one coming up too...
Also did they invent ASMR on Kiew Mission?!?!

If they'd come out of Exit at a slightly different angle, by the time of Lily On The Beach they'd have wound up in the space currently occupied by Kalax.

It is very hard to review any (almost) non vocal soundscape. But you have done very well WA. I think people who like this album would also enjoy Stuntman the EF solo record, although we get a lot more guitar on that baby.

I don’t care, I love this album, and still listen to it today. Not my favorite, but it’s one of their albums that I really like, with Encore, Poland, Stratosfear, Phaedra, Force Majeure, Hyperborea, Le Parc, Logos, Pergamon, Ricochet, Rubycon…

Exit, White Eagle, Logos & Poland were their best albums imho and still sound fresh now, almost like they were beamed down from Aliens in the heaven's to the 1980s :-)

I agree about the very 1981 feel with this album... really has that cool VDU terminal/vector graphics feel... you could easily imagine some of these tracks on US TV shows that would come a few years later. Love the title track and Remote Viewing... Exit feels like you're on a rollercoaster... Kiew Mission is just beautiful.... I've never really liked Chronozon though... I think the version of that tune on Poland is much better.
The big thing about this album is the PPG Wave sounds I guess. Really ahead of the game... but not for long which is why it does sound very 1981.

  • @Expressionistix

Exit for me was a dud in this period - White Eagle, Hyperborea, Logos and Poland were much better. I listened to if a few times but despise the short "song" structure. For me what I enjoy most about Tangerine Dream was their ability to transition to different musical ideas, emotions, tempos within their long tracks. Exit sounds like these ideas were snipped out into segments to create something more radio friendly yet the ideas themselves are not very interesting by themselves.

Ah, here it is. The final Tangerine Dream album worth listening to. Anyone overwhelmed by the band's discography I always tell, "don't bother with anything before Phaedra or after Exit". Every release from after this point sounds like a lacklustre attempt to recreate Exit or combine it with moderner sounds.
That isn't to say that it's a favourite of mine, though. It's definitely good, but the thin production and narrow scope leaves it falling behind most of their other work from the years prior. And I may also be slightly influenced by the fact that it was this album that essentially killed the band for me (what with the whole "every album after attempting to recreate this one"). Interesting to hear the perspective of someone who ranks it at #1.
