    "You will never be able to move diagonally."
    They added a new character with the DLC that lets you do exactly that. Best character ever.

      It feels so limiting when I stop playing as Diamond and go to some other character... It's like gaining the ability to fly, and then suddenly losing it

    I fear the true brilliance of the beat mechanics is lost on most outside observers. The challenge in the game isn't just to keep a steady beat. The rythm based gameplay introduces a timer into every single decision you make. The game ecourages you to keep the beat up by giving you a gold multiplier. You *have* to make a move to keep the multiplier (with a couple of exceptions, like special shoes). You can not take your time planning your moves, so the additional challenge of the game is to learn to make the needed decision in the increasingly short time between the beats.

    "When your cornered, alone, under equipped with nowhere left to dance to." A game where saying this makes sense is a game worth playing at least once.

    nerf zone 4? absolutely not. i've had this game early access for a while and today, with stage 4 being in the full release, I figured out and memorized all the enemy movement patterns in just about 3 runs. when you first play the game, everything seems impossibly unfair but you start catching on quick and realizing how the game works. moving to the beat becomes second nature but somehow stays fun forever and you're left to focus on battling the enemies. same goes for the bosses.

    George, I want to thank you for turning me on to so many indie games that might not have gotten my attention had it not been for this channel. I'll take one strong review of a small, fun steam game over 3000+ contractually obligated reviews of the Grand Theft Auto V remaster.

    8-20 hours of playtime seems a bit low, considering its meant to be played as a roguelike. If your going through floors one by one, then that seems right. But the real casual endpoint is to beat all 4 floors in a row as the main character, which is likely more than 30 hours. Anyone who enjoys the isaac style should expect that, and expect to have fun doing the same thing with a few of the more difficult characters. I was a fairly casual isaac player, I put about 100 hours into it, and I put just as much into this game as well. It has more depth than this review puts on it, even though I agree with the review in pretty much every way.

    My gripe with the game is that the rhythm is hard to read. I played for a while and I still don't know whether I'm supposed to hit the key/start jump at the beat or my character should land at the beat. It's a fraction of a second but I'm a very musically inclined person and tiny discrepancies between the beat and what I'm seeing really bothers me. Good and original game nonetheless.

      diegofloor If you see the tempo meter at the bottom of the screen, it clearly clues you in on what timing you're supposed to keep the beat on.
      I basically caught on immediately, and I'm also a musically inclined person

    This is now one of my favourite videos from you, George. Everything you said about this game really added up to a brilliant piece of constructive critisism that made me want to buy the game. Not many reviews have had that effect with me, to be honest, and that says a lot about this particular one. My very first encounter with this game came with a "Oh, not another pixelated rogue-like on Steam..." without really checking it out or even viewing a trailer or bit of gameplay.
    Since watching this video, you got me interested. More than interested. I am a huge fan of rythym-based games, and for a rythym game to take on the rogue-like genre is something I, (like many people) have never seen before. Thanks for introducing me to my new favourite indie game, George. And great review as well!

    It is way too freaking hard, especially when you move towards the later third of the main story. I'm like 35 hours into the game and still can't beat it.
    I would argue that Crypt of the Necrodancer is more difficult than Dark Souls and FURI on FURIER.
    By far the most difficult game I've ever played. It stops being fun when you can't seem to make any progress after dozens of hours.

    It may be Amplified (DLC), but it's never really felt feasable to ignore the beat for me. Since it has a small coyote time after a missed beat (0.25 seconds or so) for you to make up for a missed beat, it always _completely_ screws up my rythem to skip a beat. Much better to just dig/buffer and let the enemies get closer.

    • @greenhowie

  • @Nixitur
    @Nixitur 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't quite agree with your saying that the diagonally-moving enemies are unfair. They appear in Zone 3 as well, so you've got quite enough opportunities to acquaint yourself with them. Not to mention that you always have enough time to observe how the enemies move before you _have_ to engage them.
    Of course, knowing the patterns and being able to play around them within a strict time limit are two quite different things, but I'd say that's mostly a matter of player skill.
    I did, however, notice that quite a few Zone 4 enemies do not appear to have a clear tell on when they're going to move which doesn't seem entirely fair to me.
    Also, you are quite right in saying that you can often just ignore the multiplier and wait for the enemies to move towards you, but that wastes a lot of time and you get much less money.
    That's not so severe in single-zone mode (which is basically just for training), but in all-zones mode, you really _need_ that money or you'll quickly fall behind in terms of equipment.

    Ever heard of a game called Beat Sneek Bandit? By the guys who made Year Walk and Device 6? Looks like the devs of this game lifted the basic game mechanic from that and changed the genre from streamlined puzzler to open roguelike dungeoncrawler. I'd recommend checking it out to compare how different the mechanics affect the game, as your gripe about the cluttered screens and varied monster priorities contradicting the rhythmic gameplay wouldn't apply to BSB, although I doubt BSB would be as thrilling as you make out this game to be at times

    Hey there, I was wondering, I know you play a lot of games, and obviously you don't have time for every game a fan recommends you, but there is a really fun local co-op dungeon crawling game on Steam called Crawl. It's still in early access I'm aware, but the amount of fun I've had with my friends was well worth the price, and I can't wait for even more additions to the game. If you ever get the chance somehow, give it a try, I'd love to hear your critique on it.

    Honestly I'm not really interested in the game for its own sake, but I do kind of want to see how it handles something like Strapping Young Lad. And if the length of the level is dictated by the length of song, then does that mean you can make it really easy if you make it play some 20 minute long prog rock odyssey? What about a 10 second long grindcore song?

    • @BassbaitGG
      @BassbaitGG 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Scrustle Strapping Young Lad would be interesting, but what would REALLY be interesting is The Dillinger Escape Plan, who rotate time signatures and tempos so constantly that a consistent beat basically doesn't exist.

    • @DJCHiLLSpeaks
      @DJCHiLLSpeaks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scrustle In both scenarios, no. The goal of each level is to defeat a miniboss before time runs out so you can open a door (staircase, really) to the next level. If time runs out before you do so, you drop through a trap door to the next level (as well as lose your combo multiplier). However, before you can progress through the actual next level, you have to escape what is a monster house: you're pitted against four different kinds of enemies, at least one of which is a miniboss monster, and you can't progress through the level until you kill the miniboss of that house.
      A 10-second song is NOT good for you. Neither is a 20-minute song. It provides you with much more time, but that extra time doesn't make it any easier to fight enemies.

  • @PrezVV
    @PrezVV 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm late to the party, but I'm hard pressed to find anything unfair about this game. Enemies who move diagonally can still be evaded by simply moving back from them. Ranged weapons can get you stuck in an area that's inopportune, due to the said range. With this being put on the table, Zone 4 doesn't need a nerf in the slightest I feel. Maybe the amount of warlocks that spawn could be changed, but that's only a thought.
    In any case, this review was really well done and I'd love to see more.

    One problem is that "different" doesn't mean "good" in terms of control scheme. Devs ditched the tanky controls of Resident Evil because they were shit. The problem is that they also ditched the mechanics, and it was just a third person shooter. I think MGS4 and V show that you can keep unique mechanics and feeling without having a super-complicated, unwieldy control scheme.

      The movement and inputs for it didn't change one bit in RE4, you are still steering your character with the left stick and can't strafe. The whole controls layout is nigh identical.

    I 'm not sure what you mean by easy to ignore the beat... I mean you can't move off the beat (unless your playing as bard)

    I've watched about a dozen reviews for this game. For whatever reason this is the one that got me to buy it.

    I adore Dance Dance revolution so it's kinda cool that this supports dance pads. Too bad I haven't owned one in ages haha Plus when I play rhythm/dance games I prefer doing it on the arcade machines themselves itself, don't know how accurate modern dance pads are to be honest. It's a pity that the arcade machines aren't that popular anymore, I really want to get one eventually.

      Xourn Found out which one it is. If anyone is wondering, the track is called "The Sentinel Is Watching" and it's from a game called Nitronic Rush.

    Unfortunate the game isn't complex enough to really work with songs that aren't of a totally consistent beat. That rules out pretty much everything but club/rave electric music. Ah well. This looks kind of amazing, and the fact it's local co-op is very, very surprising. I bet this is hilarious and fun with a friend.
