Haribol! I think you are very close to reconciling this flat earth/globe argument. Unfortunately these days people are so attached to being right they often won’t listen to information that could disprove their opinion. Here it appears both fit together in a sense. While one is more practical the physical manifestation we can experience and the other more relative to the workings of the cosmos around us that we are less in touch with.

The Puranik cosmology is there to praise the majesty of the Lord, not to give astronomical facts. Thus you can swap out the Puranic cosmology for the modern one. Nilakantha Somayaji quoted this verse from Bhagavatam to justify updating astronomical parameters: Bhagavatam 11.22.25: iti nānā-prasaṅkhyānaṁ tattvānām ṛṣibhiḥ kṛtam sarvaṁ nyāyyaṁ yuktimattvād viduṣāṁ kim aśobhanam Thus many enumerations of Tattvas were made by the Sages. All are correct from reasonability. What ungraciousness do the learned have? (Rhetorical). (Translation done by me, but the ISKCON translation will do)

specifically, the part of how the previous maha-yuga is ending with a major catastrophe, like how the permian ended and the triassic began

there does need to be a balance. But Vedic cosmology gives the point of view of higher dimensional realities
