SanDisk PRO-BLADE Station First Look

  • A quick first look at the SanDisk PRO-BLADE Station, which is finally shipping six months after the PRO-BLADE Transport and SSD mags were released.
    Upon further investigation, the write failures with Blackmagic Design's Disk Speed Test app on FAT32 are my own fault. I didn't notice that the file test size was set to 5GB, which exceeds the maximum file size FAT32 supports (4GB).

    Hello Christopher. Also I was interested in getting the Station with some Blades for Editing 6K 8K. Did you try to Format the drives APFS they should go faster. I know you can't use them inside a camera but I need the station just to edit not as a mag reader

      The mags actually come formatted in APFS. (Which seems an odd choice to me -- exFAT would make them more immediately usable for most use cases.) But they are ultimately just block storage devices, so you can format them with any file system that is supported by your host devices.
      For video editing, the file system probably won't make much performance difference, though. APFS gets you journalling, which is good in event of a sudden power outage. And it will do better if you have tens of thousands of tiny files. But video files are generally a handful of very large files that you are doing sequential reads against, and any of the file systems will deliver max speeds for that. You will be limited by Thunderbolt max transfer speed, not the file system. If you really need absolute max speed, the only way to get that is with NVME storage in the computer itself using full PCIe bus connectivity.
      I use the PRO-BLADE system as capture media, not to edit from (I ingest to my NAS and edit from there). On my Blackmagic Video Assist, I use Apple HFS because it also has journaling. (And I am doing ingest on a Mac, which can read that file system.) Almost all my other devices are using exFAT, with a couple devices that only support FAT32 (like recording multi-channel audio on an Allen & Heath SQ). For the FAT32 devices, I use the 2TB mag, since they don't support 4TB and would only use half of the larger mags.

      Thank you very much for the long answer. I got a new Windows with 4x NVMe that go at 7000MB/s theoretically instead they arrive at 4500 MB/s each but it always crashes I also called a tech guy but I am becoming crazy it stops always the USB ports go slow, the Thunderbolt 4 ports are slow also. I am selling all parts and getting a new Mac Studio M2 MAX. I have also other Macs I wouldn't had to change. Apart this one Sandisk that is stable I looked at OWC Thunderbay Flex 8 that can handle U.2 Enclosures for M.2 but it has also 8x 3.5" HDD drives it will make a huge noise I thought it would be better to have 3 different enclosures, Editing on NVMe 16TB, Music SSD and Large Storage Copy HDD 3,5 so that I don't turn them on together and they don't make all the noise. Another solution would be QNAP TBS-h574TX with 5x NVMe but it has Thunderbolt and NAS that I hate too complicated for me.

    Hey Christopher, useful video - how loud is the fan noise on the Station - when idle, and when working hard on a large transfer for a while?

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never heard the fan ramp up. I do have a fair bit of ambient noise in the computer room/office, however.

      @@cwichura Thank you! I've seen in one video a big fan burst on power on, but then it seems to idle quietly. Is the fan spinning at all times?

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomwaterman9687 I recall the fan burst when I first plugged it in, but haven't heard that since. It's been idle with no mags installed overnight, and I can't feel any air movement out the back from the fan right now, nor can I see any movement recording the fan with my mobile (can't easily check it directly since its facing away towards the wall and the thunderbolt cable barely reaches to where it sits right now so can't flip it around).

    • @tomwaterman9687
      @tomwaterman9687 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cwichura Thank you! Good to know it's basically silent after boot. I'd love to know if it spins up the fans whilst using the mags, and if there is an amount of usage that triggers fan noise. Planning on using in a quiet audio room. No one else seems to have one and SanDisk haven't included a dBA spec for this annoyingly.

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomwaterman9687 I am using it for ingest, and so only really reading from one mag at a time and no writes except when doing synthetic benchmarks. I haven't heard it spin up over the ambient noise (HVAC, etc) in the office.

    Hey Christopher. Do you still like the Pro-Blade?

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. I use it quite a bit and it's been both fast and reliable. The SSDs were overpriced when they first launched, but the price has come down considerably on them in the last year. So while they are still a bit more expensive than the typical portable SSDs, the workflow benefits more than make up for it.

    MSDOS has a 4GB file size limit, which is why Blackmagic fails when it tries to write a 5GB test file like you have selected in the settings.

      Yes, I realized that shortly after the video was posted and added a note in the description.

    Can I control the hard disk with a program?

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What sort of control are you after? It shows as any other block storage device so you can create whatever partition(s) you want on it. So I'm not really sure what you are after.

  • @majorediting8164

    Can you edit videos directly off these without too much lag if any?

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. 2400MB/s read and writes average is more than enough for multiple camera streams even with high bitrate codecs.
      And it doesn't have noticeable throttling due to heat buildup.

    Can the mags be raided together?

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do this at the OS level with a tool appropriate to whichever OS you are running. The enclosure does not provide hardware RAID itself.

    we can't see the table, but your face, from where you are picking up and showing. you have to adjust the camera to see the products and not you. Thanks for showing the products. Thinking to buy 1Tb mag and box and why the transport is not universal for 1,2,4TB

    • @cwichura
      @cwichura  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Transport and Station ARE universal for all the PRO-BLADE mag sizes.
