The Transport only supports USB-C speeds (20 Gbps) while the Sandisk G40 that it was compared to, supports Thunderbolt speeds (40 Gbps). The Pro-Blade Station supports USB-C and Thunderbolt, but costs $499 and requires external power. The G40 can be connected directly to any computer supporting USB-C or Thunderbolt but with the mags you are depending on SanDisk to continue supporting and selling the mags and related accessories for competitive prices now and in the future.
Fun fact: if you pop the mags open, you find 2280 M.2 NVME drives. WD_BLACK, to be exact. I'd be willing to bet you could just load in your own NVME SSD's and it would probably work just fine.
Great introduction! The prices in Europe for these Pro-Blade products are about 1.3 to 1.5 times higher though. I don't like that the SSD Mag is a closed device. I don't like that you can't get 20 Gb/s from the Transport into a Mac computer. I guess the Pro-Blade station is the only way to support the high transfer speeds over Thunderbolt 3.
Would it be crazy if I wanted to run this in RAID 0 with 4 x 4TB blades for an ultra fast 16TB? I already own OWC softraid and I think it would work in theory… if so, seems like a great deal on price, quality and performance
That is not a crazy solution at all. That is what it is designed for. The Blades to get your dailies out in the field and then the Station for use at your editing computer.
SanDisk Professional just announced the next generation G-RAID MIRROR that includes a slot for the Pro Blade. It is the best of both worlds and will be shipping in a couple weeks.

It should be nice if they convert this as a RAID. Or am I missing something??
