The most important thing is getting that private equity out of bank accounts and into research labs, aswell as public funding. Almost 1trillion on defense every year but how much on longevity? It would be here very soon if we collectively decided it was time

Yes you nailed it. Longevity research needs capital and if the large capital fonds as well as the billionaires start to contribute we can get to longevity escape velocity sooner 👏

Furthermore, behavioral economics shows that we are not always rational actors, we often invest time, effort, energy into things that ultimately makes no sense. But... if marketers, etc can figure out how to direct our time/energy/capital towards things that are silly, couldn't that aslo be used to direct it towards longevity ends?

Met Aubrey in about 2006. He was talking about his Methuselah Mouse prize, he had just awarded money to a lab tech for husbandry. Getting a mouse to live 30% longer by TLC. My own observation that mouse studies produced 25-30% improvements in LE non of which would be meaningfully translated into humans and why. We had a couple of beers over the subject. My takeaway way that Aubrey was pretty grounded in his expectation for the prospects for radical life extension.

I think it will happen faster than the optimistic people expect
      Remember AlphaFold?
The team that created that model has just released a paper about another - it is around their new technique for programming biology.
Example: Ask it to predict a protein that glows like jellyfish protein - but not a jellyfish protein.
A little bit of fine-tuning or back and forth produces proteins never seen before. They glow - in a brand new way.
If you have a protein for a system to manufacture, it blends with existing gene editing techniques.
I think we now have the tools to crack biology, and AI is now sufficient to perform a breadth and depth-based investigation for us in a highly automated way.
Functional immortality will begin by 2030 for people on the research teams and their families.

@@jimj2683 There have been some attempts at artificial discs. They are limited to the lumbar and cervical spine and there are quite a few risks involved. I think the spine is very hard to fix at the moment. We don't have a direct biological replacement to discs and the surgeries are very complex.
In old age, if you do everything else right and never get injured, the spine will still cause issues due to the natural wear and tear from gravity and walking. Once the spine goes, it's much harder to maintain everything else that's required for health because there will be pain and less movement. The discs have very little blood flow and nourishment so it's an area that can fail even in the healthiest bodies.

@@danielkafer I couldn't care less about Logan Paul, but I'll check it out if it has something useful for improving the spine and discs. The holy grail would be disc height gain and the elimination of narrowing from facet hypertrophy, foraminal or canal stenosis etc.. These are currently considered irreversible and given enough time, they affect everyone. The body doesn't heal these properly because the spine doesn't have good vascularization like muscle does. Maybe nanobots could deal with the narrowing in some hypothetical future. ;)

I just want to be able to live the early life I couldn't get to live. Maybe in 15 years we will have age stabilization for 60 year old people.
Longevity escape velocity is a very confusing term because people born today have already achieved it.
The stuff we will have in 15 years will be too fluctuating to be applied to 80 year old people without a high chance of spilling into death and will be too imperfect to be an improvement for young (below 50) people. Therefore, "aging" escape velocity for 60 year old people.
Some 25 years into the future it will be aging escape velocity for people of biological ages 40-80 (bringing back to 40 in a functional sense). Here, we are already treading on wild speculation, there is no way to know the obstacles and breakthroughs.
I would expect that full age reversal will come in 35 years and will include structural fixes in 45 (without which you'd still have misshapen bones or skin, etc.). All wild speculation, it's just the time frame I feel might be most plausible or likely.
Finally, in 50-60 years it might include active genetic and epigenetic fixes to customize out defects and provide enhancements.
All of this is thinking outside a possible technological singularity but keeping the track of exponential growth, with AI simulations but without factoring AGI (AGI might take a few decades to get, ChatGPT is nowhere near it).

No male 20s deaths from heart attack, few if any childhood cancers starting at 20, few if any diseases of aging. My spine symptoms, for example began at age 25. Up to that point I could be on my feet all day. No problems but allergies and asthma which also could have been caused by aging. I remember watching this news clip where a reporter went looking for Grey early in the morning for an interview, and ended up finding him at a pub - early in the morning - having already downed three beers if I well recall. Grey was shameless about this and only said that he could handle having alcohol, plenty of alcohol, for breakfast unlike some other weaker men. I don't know much about health but it's a self-evident truth that drinking booze in the morning is not a recipe for longevity. And even though you don't have to be a great human being to be a good scientist let it be known that there are also a few accusations of sexual misconduct against him, for what it's worth.
