They were an incredibly tight band at this point. Three exceptional musicians with a huge sense of ambition, individually and collectively. The "secret sauce" of the Police is down to three main qualities:
1. They had the good fortune that their record company, A&M, was totally behind them and supported them without reservation. Their first three singles sank like a stone, including the initial release of "Roxanne." It was only because A&M believed in them that they were able to re-release some of their early singles when they finally took hold and charted.
2. All three of them were accomplished musicians and rehearsed like crazy. All the cylinders were firing musically speaking. Unlike many other bands, there was absolutely no dead weight to pull around in the Police. They were a lean, mean, rock 'n' roll machine. And they sounded different than any other band at the time, blending punk, new wave, rock, jazz, reggae, and world music together and producing something unique.
3. They worked hard. Toured relentlessly, starting with a station wagon or a van, playing to five people in the audience if necessary, and working all the way up from the bottom of the tour ecosystem to the top at Shea Stadium and huge international mega-tours playing to tens of thousands of fans.
I was there !! Sting asked for a drink and someone went to McDonald's across the road !!! I think they git him a milkshake not quite what he wanted.

I'd love to know the exact date that Message in a Bottle was recorded for the album, I'm guessing it was just after this- they're still playing the intro with the little halt at 21:29 at this point!
Who doesn't love Police minutiae? I just bought the extremely expensive Secret Diaries by Stewart Copeland. I thought the recording date might be in there, but when I looked for it I learned Stewart's diary keeping stopped in December 1978.
