      One of my all-time faves!

I've heard (second-third-hand) that they'd have a soprano player come over and play certain notes into the drum while they adjusted the tuning. I never witnessed it myself but it sounds like a pretty cool electronics-free way to do it.

The finals recording from this year doesn’t come CLOSE to conveying how clean this line was - that’s why this footage is so important. Honestly, the whole Cavaliers ‘95 percussion section was amazing - can’t forget that killer front ensemble!

I've always felt the front ensemble is what won them drums

I'm still so angry at the awful finals recording. Wasn't it the first year they went digital, and that's why it was so bad?

    • @Wahl95

@@smdftb8495 - I’m honestly not sure. I think I heard somewhere that the placement of the mics was just awful. A lot of DCI finals recordings from the 90s have the same problem.

1994, 1995, and 1999 are the worst in terms of stereo mic placement absolutely killing drum lines.
Watch the SCV 1999 snare feature - they get magically clean as they approach the 50.

@@Wahl95 I'm not an audio engineer, but I am a nerd, and through the power of the Internet and some other resources, I have figured out some stuff. In 1982, Larry Rock and Jim Unrath began producing audio recordings of the DCI Finals competition, replacing Ken Kobold in that department (although he would record many other competitions). Rock/Unrath had two microphone poles on the 35 yard lines and 8ish steps from the front sideline, and they had a microphone pole pushed further away from the front sideline and on the 50 yard line. The center microphone pole had two microphones on it; the other poles only had one. Rock/Unrath's recordings were digitally recorded/mixed/mastered, and they (Unrath dropped out in 1987, I think) would continue to digitally record the DCI Finals with some setup differences (see secondary comment) until 1995 and again in 1999. All of DCI's CDs from that era are copies of the digital masters, but only the 1982-1984 and 1999 DVD sets used the digital masters; the 1985-1988 and 1993 (some DVDs are missing from my collection, so I can't confirm them) DVDs instead used the audio from the analog master videotapes. But anyway, 1995 was when they switched to a different audio engineer, and their setup was similar to Rock's, except the microphone poles were shorter, two microphone poles were added to the 45 yard lines, and the outer poles were moved to the 30 yard lines. This, combined with some utterly rotten sound mixing, resulted in what I consider to be DCI's worst recordings ever. Thankfully, they hired a different/better audio engineer for 1996-1998.

The percussion feature in Mercury really compliments the piece so well.
Also, it’s nice to hear this drumline not sound like crap. Shame the official recordings are bad.
